You're absolutely right. It was an amazing film.

Some of my friends don't like it because of the lack of a sympathetic main character, but I found Wikus' bald-faced self-interest a refreshing and realistic departure from the normal squeaky-clean, or nasty-but-sees-error-of-ways-and-redeems-self hero.
Wikus is closer to the second one, but he never turns around and makes a moral stand based on what's right... he basically does what he can to get himself out of the situation, learning a few lessons along the way at a very late stage. He never quite gets to the squeaky clean phase, even when his anger compels him to risk his life to ensure Christopher's success.

There are some minor logical conundrums to the plot, but nothing big enough to disrupt the suspension of disbelief. At the end of the day, the story, fantastic acting, unique - and in Hollywood terms - exotic setting, and incredibly expressive effects make it a pleasure to watch.

No, no sequel! Leave it as it is, a theatrical masterpiece. Don't mar its beauty with a lousy sequel.

It was hardly a masterpiece.

It wasn't even an original story. It was entertaining. Lets leave it at that.
Can't wait for 2014 to start.

Good movie but I'd rather leave it as it is now, I kinda like the idea of imagining how this story ended up, pesonaly I like to think that aliens never came back (considering our hero was a tragic character), anyway there's too many happy-enddings, that's why I like to think they never came back ;)

As for the movie, I liked it although there was nothing revolutionary as they claimed it would be, the ship was rip of city killers from ID4 (at least IMHO), aliens were cool and whole idea of them being kept in refugee camp is quite unique, at last aliens didn't chose NY or LA or Washington for a pit stop so thumbsup for Johanesburg :D the rest was quite as ussually, all in all that was good movie ;)

that movie wasn't that great. A friend of mine rented it and onl paid a buck, which is good cuz it wasn't worth theater price. Not saying it was bad..it just wasn't anything that stands out..like matrix or transformers.
I just realised something. I've released over 300 fully modded ships for bridge commander. Bow to your master :D

Well... I would'n go into the theater to see it but it was certainly diffrent. Wich is good.

There are so many diffrences between the usual alien movies and this one, that it deserves to be noticed.

Also the mere fact that it takes place where racial discrimination is far from unknown gives the move even more of value, althoug also takes a little of it, as it seems that it basically tells that story rather than a brand new one.

And it was hardly entertaining. It was hard to follow, and I was really irritated with the main character swearing literally every 2 words. Literally at one point I think he said "F*ck them! Those f*ckers! F*ck! F*cking f*ck!" Jeez. Funny, writers can't think of lines, they just put in "f*ck" and the problem is solved.

I will say I do think the movie was rather humorous, even when it didn't intend to be. I watched it with a friend, and when the little alien threw the candy at the guy we both screamed "BOOM HEADSHOT!"

I don't know about you, but there are times when I have outbursts like that. I would hardly call having the main character utter a string of expletives I would in a similar situation a cop out.

I try very hard not to because of personal convictions. But I will admit, it has happened. Still, it's just annoying in movies to me.

Well this tend to be recent trend in making movies more ... realistic, let's take 80' action movies like Lethal Weapon or Die Hard, hardly anyone said single F*ck... of course there were lots of damn, sh*t, SOB. Dunno if it disturbs me that recent movies are filled with heavy swearing but I did notice there more of this stuff recently, even games are full of it (Mass Effect 2 - especially Jack's conversations or the Witcher - simply uber-hard and juicy swearing there especially in Polish language ... yummi :P )

Indeed, Assassin's Creed II was also full of it, albeit mostly in Italian. Funny, I never knew there was an Italian word for "c***sucker" till I played that game.

I like to consider myself smart, and I enjoyed the film immensely.

I might go so far as to say it was my film of the year, 2009 (Star Trek certainly wasn't).

It saddens me that you guys don't see the greatness of D9. While it might not be a masterpiece, it was a damn-site better than any other film I've seen this year.

And when you site Transformers as a better film, it kind of nails your demographic to the wall. Turn on your 360 and enjoy some Gears Of War or Halo 3.

I don't usually make posts this ascerbic. Apologies for that. I'm just disappointed to see a general slide in the intellect of this forum, and some of the replies in this thread are indicative of that. You're all fine, upstanding people, I guess I just don't get what's cool these days, and why.

lets keep this thread to the topic of the film, rather than what kind of people the fans are for liking it or not as that can borderline on insulting, like the previous post, which I will let stand for it's tact for the moment..but..back to the film gentlemen.

I will say, although IMHO the film wasn't that entertaining, the storyline was quite interesting. Aliens in a concentration camp has never been done before (that I know of) so that immediately caught my attention.

Oh pardon me but so far I enjoyed D9 (watched it 3 times) and it's still very original to me, I don't have anything against swearing, I just think writers use too much of it due to lack of good ideas ;)

but by all means I liked it better thanmany more 2009 movies, ST was kinda dissappointing (far fetched plot), and I hate Transformers :) it's too... teenagerish for my taste (and so is Spiderman and X-men)
