So I was watching this documentary about cell phones, and it turns out that the first Cell phone as we know them today was appearenlty invented by a motorola guy who got his inspiration from the Star Trek communicator.

While his phone was not the first wireless phone to work outside the home, it was the first to utilize cell coverage in the way modern phones do today.

So... What else was invented by getting inspiration from the Star Trek Universe. If possible add reference...

Star Trek has given us the possibility of a better future if we make the effort to make it that way (i.e. removing racism, global peace, cure for cancer etc).

Off the top of my head, technology-wise we have:

Communicators (Cell Phones)
Laptops

Development in the fields of:

Transporters
Warp Drive

Not to mention the fact, that Star Trek has given us several hundred hours worth of entertainment over the past 40 years, and is enjoyed by millions of people around the world. Episodes (Reruns) are run somewhere in the world on a daily basis.

Mike Okuda made the mission logos for the latest NASA missions. In fact, I think he does all the graphic work for them now.

According to a documentary i saw, I think it was How William Shatner changed the world, the guy that invented the MP3 got inspiration from the characters being able to call up music from the ship's computer at will on TNG.

Phased array radar seems to be linked to it in my own view, heck its gotten so powerful and small now that the new F22 and F35 are able to focus the energy of their radar enough to burn out a SAM sites radar system and computers.

Another thing is Deflector shields, Nasa and the military are looking very hard into this. Nasa's current theory and write ups makes their deflector strikingly similar to the one proposed in star trek

I saw a article a while back about the use of verbal universal commuticators being used in the buisness world, its only a matter of time before someone makes one small enough to fit in a ear

With the camouflage suit in GI Joe, the filmmakers mentioned that it was based upon a concept from actual developmental research. I'm digging right now, but (according to them) we're not far off from having a system that records images from behind you and broadcasting them from your front to help you blend in.
