Another Viewscreen question
« on: April 13, 2010, 08:44:01 AM »
This is probably immensely stupid of me to ask, but anyway...

I've been thinking over the Type 11 and (soon) Lurok's remodel for the Runabout set. Recently Lurok was talking about the viewscreen face, which got me thinking more and more. Does this face actually play out exactly like a TV screen, in that what you see is scaled to that? If so, wouldn't it be viable to put a huge one infront of a say... Type-15, which has just the one window and not much in the way of horizontal LOS? That would give the sense of scale of a tiny ship, right?

(As I said, immensely stupid, but I'm trying to wrap my head around how it works, I already know it has to be a completely flat face, and separate from the actual nif, but scaling confuses me. Normally, I'd just check this out myself, but as Bridge Modelling is such an arduous task that I am yet to even battle, it seemed easier to just ask.  :roll)

On my bridge to get it working I had to cut a view screen shaped hole in the wall.

While updating Runabout with your new floor console (thanks for work  :)),   I accidentally exported model without ceiling and got this shot.  I'd made the viewscreen nif bigger anyway,  and this is view at max magnification.  So guess can get pretty big.

On a related note, main issue with Type 11 bridge set is the model isn't centred at XYZ pivot, so target on viewscreen is always off to right and up.   Can you rescript viewscreen to centre target?

You know, a bridge set like that would make way for a good tourist shuttle. :P

If skybox style viewscreens could work, I think it'd be a brilliant idea! A space nightclub with impulse engines and a view of a nebula..  :funny

Thanks for the help though, guys. I guess the only thing left is to learn what I can and try to experiment!

what might be interesting experiment is to do transparent textures for ceiling (so can see through) but with cabin reflection diffuse map on the interior surface,  so looks more realistic glass effect rather than 'open sky'.

So, another question: Will having a solid face infront of the viewscreen create problems? Other than the obvious of not being able to see the viewscreen?

Also, I recall hearing the question  a long time ago, but I don't remember the answer... Can the viewscreen be 'locked' to a view? say... Forward? Like a window effect.

If you press the home key this locks the view to forward looking, I do this with the type 11 cockpit now and it works just fine.

Yup, in fact the released Type 11 bridge does this.

All viewscreens do, by pressing "Home" in bridge view.

Really? Mine doesn't. It functions like a regular viewscreen. Always has.

I thought BR incorporated it, either way, the scripting does exist in KM 1.0. In scripts/autoload, the file "ShuttleViewBridgePlugin.py" Now, if you're done repeating what someone has already said and trying to make me look like an idiot..

Actually I wasn't trying to "make you look like an idiot," I was just asking a question. As for my "repeating what someone already said," I missed that post. Excuse me for making an honest mistake.  :roll
