Sisko - thought would hate but...
« on: July 22, 2010, 10:01:39 PM »
Ok guys, this is really hard for me.  First love always been Voyager, and TOS. But read so much about DS9 here (and admit do love BSG reboot) that decided to give a try.  Now, all of out sequence (seen eps from series 1-end, but not in order), but I have to say growing on me (now watching from Series 1), and esp Sisko. Thought would hate, but  he seems to have more of  Kirk's charm and swagger than Picard.  Am I crazy?    I still don't get the Ferengi (too much a  stereotype) but I can see the appeal/arc of Kira, O'Brien, Bashir and Dax.   Someone tell me I'm crazy and give up now... or converse?   As of now though,  Sisko getting my vote for 2nd coolest capt after Kirk...

Sisko is such a bamf.  He has all the "I'm cool, so suck it" that Kirk has without all the "Hey there beautiful" stuff.  And he doesn't need a Spock or McCoy to complete his act, just his son.  All the other captains were single, yet here was this family man, and he's toughing it out in the frontier.  I like how DS9 was described as a Western, and Sisko fills that role perfectly.  Man with a grudge against the system and too much hurt in his past takes a post in a "frontier town", thinking he can escape for a while.  Yet he gets placed in the thick of the action, and not backing out, discovers himself.  IMO, Sisko is not only the best captain, but also wins the "most improved" award.  He actually develops as a person over his seven seasons.

I always liked how he was always seemingly cool and collected, taken in whats happening around him, and then picking and choosing when he will act. I also like his gall of attacking the dominion first because he knew what was happening and Starfleet wasn't moving fast enough. He wasn't like Picard and Janeway where diplomacy and rules first, Sisko was out for the greater good and would bend the rules to fit, like how he got the Romulans to join the war (one of my most favorite episodes btw)

My favourite Sisko episode would have to be "In the Pale Moonlight"

That episode is just... just... Well wait till you get to it. Season 6 I believe.

I'm a DS9 fan to a serious degree.  I think that the Sisko is by far the best captain the show has ever had.  His cool under pressure and poise in every situation is what every Starfleet officer should aspire to.

Avery Brooks is the captain that every Starfleet officer should aspire to be.  Congratulations, sir, on a job well done.

Thanks for insights/opinions, guys.  I'm still in season 1, and think has inevitable teething problems but am being persuaded to stick with it and look forward to later ones.  I know from a couple of other threads that there's some good episodes to come.  Just curious:  is it explained in later shows why Sisko changes look?  Or just one of those things? Like Janeway's hair  :D :D
I think I prefer his later badass look (shaved head and beard).

if youre gonna go through DS9 - watch them in order from the beginning of the Dominion War until the end of the series...
skipping around, youll lose alot of the greatness of it...

Yeah, Sisko's later look was much more badass, it also gave me a Babylon 5 vibe for reasons unknown.. (Yet the setting never did...  :funny)

Sisko is the most flawed and human captain we've had so far. Punching Q, mouthing off at Picard, not always following orders, and oh yes, allowing the murder of a high ranking Romulan official and covering it up in order to win a war. I doubt Archer, Kirk or Picard would have. As for Janeway she seems by the book but has fallen off the wagon a couple of times.

sisko is pure bronze knackers, believe me.  the reason he changes his look later in the series is because Avery Brooks is uncomfortable with his hair.  also, his previous series (TV show) was as a rebel cop/PI i believe, and he sported that look in that series.  checked: guest star in Spencer for hire, and did a half season spinoff show (13 eps is an american half season) that most likely flopped.

two episodes to look foreward to in later series
"explorers" sisko builds a Bajoran solar sail ship (how Gibbs) and sets out with it with Jake on board, and they get blown to warp one, ending up at CARDASSIA, much to the annoyance of Dukat, I belive, which helps prove Bajorans had warp worthy tech, even if it was wooden

another episode involves an infiltration with Klingon disguises.  Mr. Brooks makes a damn fine lookin Klingon!

I'm a niner, and even I haven't seen em all yet.

You can probably get away with skipping to the last episode of season 2 ("The Jem'Hadar"), since that's the point of where things take off (the cold war between the Federation and the Dominion). I grew up watching TNG and Voyager and I didn't see one episode of DS9 until I was a teenager and Spike TV started airing re-runs (I think it was back in 04 or 05), but now that I've seen it I'm hooked.

Yeah I'm a Niner as well

TNG is too sterilized,

Voyager kinda ehhhh

TOS is showing its age, still great though.

My favorite is the one where he keeps bouncing through time and sees Jake get older and older. Thatwas probably the most emotional ST episode I ever saw and made itone of the best, minus moonlight episode and the one where the Odyssey gets destroyed

I liked that one too, "Jake....My Sweet Sweet boy." best quote ever!

I also liked the baseball episode!  Seeing the Vulcans puzzlement over Sisko celebrating their loss...priceless :D
