« on: August 23, 2010, 12:21:38 PM »
hey all im new here my names james im just starting 3d work really ive been playing STBC for a while now and wanted to include my own design so i could play around with it but my skills are very limited and i was hoping some one here would help me along with parts that im not good at.

here is my first made up ST ship, i call it the Rogers class its main mission is training of cadets and civilians who are going to live onboard ships and need to know whats going to happen and what to do in emergencys. but due to the Dominion war they were pressed into use as border patrol and convoy escort ships.
here are a few Wip images.

not sure on nacelle placment yet leaning towards the second more standard one.
please help i need input and help really.
thanks

Hi James, welcome to the forums,

Firstly I think its a good start, if you chamfered those edges on the saucer and applied some mesh smoothing you would well be on your way, I agree with the second placement for the necelles.

That's a darn good start, there.  I like the divided primary hull, although it could really use some more integration with the secondary hull, as well as more polys.  The edges desperately need more rounding.  Double the poly count around the edge and you'll be on your way to a great ship!

As for the nacelles: try doubling the size (or perhaps 1.5x) and placing them between the two spots you have them now.  Then lower them just a bit and string a set of pylons between the engineering section and the nacelles.

Welcome to BC!

+Cookie for the new guy! ;)

If you don't use smoothing groups, this is gonna look really weird.  I wouldn't download it, if that were the case.  Mainly because if you look at most Federation ships, they don't have strange angles and blocky construction (with a few exceptions).  What exactly is it about smoothing groups that you dislike so much?

*inserts jokes about button down sweaters, converse sneakers, and Lady Elaine*

you'll get a lot of "1 votes" without round edges, even if you say right off you don't like em :P  (at least on BC files)  I'm allready starting to picture the texture and weapons placements for this.  do you intend on staying with the TOS style nacelles?  i'm liking the hangers, but that must be a pretty skinny power column in there.  why not solidify or thicken the hangers, after all, you can't have people always going EVA for basic maintenence.

especially a bunch of cadets noobs :P

The saucer sort of reminds me of that one ship STO. Good start.

Looks good. I think that you just need to round the edge of the saucer some more.

Unique design, I like it.

man, I thought that middle rollbar would be a miranda style torpedo rollbar.

Looks like you over did the chamfers mate,

you only need to chamfer out the parts of the saucer you are going to either detail or need to look smooth.

Have a look at the demonstration i made for you:

1. I created a simple saucer shape using a spline.

2. I then lathed the spline using a very small 16 segmets to make my saucer.

3. It looks too edgy, so i am going to chamfer just the rim for now, so i select the edges I want to lathe. (these are up to you)

4. Once i apply the chamfer it looks smoother and i fiddle with the spacing to get the gaps even.

5. The Chamfer has left a rouge vert, which needs to be tidy, and so i weld it upward, and continue this action on both sides of the saucer.

6. The saucer now looking smoother, but keeping the polies down and 100% clean for you to keep working with.

Good luck with your projects and I hope that helps.

I made a saucer @ neck Video TUT a few years ago, I'm sure it covers this.. http://bc-central.net/forums/index.php/topic,4115.0.html
