Hear, hear, I might succeed as a prophet! We got CG's attention!

Well, I think everything has been said. Wonderful work.

Suggestion, you know the way CG textured the reflections from the cut-in windows on the under-saucer to the top of the cut ins? That was a really sweet effect, perhaps worthy of plagiarism here. :D

Gorgeous work. There's subtle differences with the CG sov, this one feels weightier somehow, more solid. I love the modelled in detail on the bussard spines. Are the bussards more rounded on this one, or is it some kind of mental illusion caused by the slightly different proportions?

Any chance of a side-by-side with the CG sov?

Well, I can confirm the bussards are more round, because they're supposed to be. :D  The ship is supposed to be bulkier too.  The CG Sov was built off of reference pics from all the movies, but no schematics, so these newer renders that've been circulating have brought a whole host of old mistakes to light.  The bussards are actually quite rounded over the top, and the shape of the nacelles has changed a bit over the years.

One of the most annoying bits to model for me has always been the pylon attachment point to the nacelles.  They're almost angular, but their cocked at such an oddball angle, it makes it really tough to get an accurate shape for them.  I think DJ's pretty close to nailed it, but the undersides of the nacelles look a little too narrow for some reason.. or maybe the pylon just needs to stick out to the side more in back, I'm not sure.

The only bad thing about those renders... they're not TRUE orthographic shots.  They're still perspective views, and just use a very long distance camera to mimic a planform, so it can cause some weirdness around the extreme edges of the pictures when you try to line things up.  The side view in particular seems to be off from the top and bottom.

Oh btw.. I tend to do this too sometimes because it looks better.. but the Starfleet arrowhead is upside down.  :funny

Plus the Sovereign seems a lot more bulkier with all the new renders there are. Or is it just my imagination? The secondary hull looks a lot thicker when I look at the drex-files renders for example

The Drexfiles render seems really off to me.  But yeah, the ship does have a certain degree of bulk to it.  Here are some orthos of my ship.  It's not 100% perfect proportionally to the CGI renders from Nemesis, however it is very close.

Ortho is 2400x3200 so that you can have a nice close look at things.

Again, it's not 100% perfect, but I think it's certainly passable. :)

I personally think you have bridged a good mix of both CGI and studio model.

The Orthographic shot really shows off the awesome texture work on this, just brings her to life.

Absolutely beautiful.

Once again, really, really nice DJ!

Questions:

- Are there any more "fine tunings" you plan to do on the model?

- This has been asked before but are you thinking about doing animated bussards?

Perhaps.  I've decided to let it sit for the week and maybe do some things here and there.

As for animated bussards, no.  I'm not going to do them.  I have never liked the way it looked on the existing ships... too choppy and fake looking.  I also don't like the way it messes with damaging.  That being said, I don't know that I've got the final bussard texture on there right now.  I'm not entirely pleased with it.

See, this is why I'm thinking, "Why even try and compete anymore?" :funny Those textures blow everything on mine out of the water because of the way you made them.  I'm definitely going to have to try and do that myself on my 2.0 and that original design I started.

Absolutely beautiful.

yeah that half textured model has always looked weird to me. Yours on the other hand is b-e-a-utiful!

It may be time to retire my fleet of cg sovs

The CG Sov should never be retired... this new one is just an outstanding addition.

The Drexfiles renders (the whitish ones with the missing secondary hull penants, et al)) are of a model made as a pitch by an outside FX company for the insurrection contract. It was made solely on reference from watching First Contact, and is wholly innaccurate. They failed to win the contract, but years later, Doug Drexler found the model, not knowing where exactly it had come from, and restored it for use in the Ships of the Line calendars.

They were featured in the recent Haynes manual book, too. They're very unsuitable for reference.

I know, but my install will only allow me to add a certain number of ships before it starts crashing all the time :(

Really? Do you have any idea why that happens? Did you do anything different when you originally installed your BC that might make it behave that way?

Sorry Jimmy, should've known better  :D

Hey DJ, are you going to be creating new original phaser/torps for this or use already established ones?

Established ones.  I don't think I can add anything in that department that people haven't already done a good job of already.

Fair play, the tactical folder is pretty full of similar or the same weapon scripts with loads of different modder's prefixes. There's no need for that, if you ask me.
