Warp drive
« on: February 21, 2011, 10:55:23 PM »
Quick clarification needed:

Do warp drives actually move the vessel forward while they are incased in a warp bubble or does it just form/open the bubble?
Though much is taken, much abides; and though
 We are not now that strength which in old days
 Moved earth and heaven; that which we are, we are;
 One equal temper of heroic hearts,
 Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will
 To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.

More likely the former, as you need a stable "Warp Field" to initiate and maintain Warp Speed.

that's kinda complicated, yes they create the warp field, but do they move the vessel? yes and no.  The warp field submerges the ship in subspace and warps the space time around the ship.  Essentially the ship is standing still the entire time, and the space time is moving around it, allowing it to move faster than light despite the Theory of Relativity.

I thought a warp field collapses space in fronr of the ship and expands space behind it essecially making a wave in which a ship inside a warp field rides?

that's more or less right, the space-time warping around the ship does that, which allows the ship to move without moving relativistically.
