TOS Excelsior
« on: March 04, 2012, 09:33:20 AM »

Initial modelling isn't far off from being done. The basic silhouette is done (pending feedback) so I will be looking to add smaller details soon.
I actually want this to be more "The cage " era of TOS - that time has been fascinating me a lot recently, so I have been playing around with points on the nacelles (though not shown) as well as having the grill like ends rather then the glowing orbs. I like the idea of the excelsior class actually being around for ages before we see her in STIII as well as being around in the TNG era.

Very nice, i'm thinking if you could bury the delector a bit to give it more Excelsior feel but keeping it's current shape?

I have a couple ideas for experiments i might try with the dish, but yeah I think insetting it more but still keeping it a separate looking dish is probably the way to go. Will have to drink it a bit mind you.

I played around with the dish to inset it more, but it didnt really fit right and messed up the flow of the hull so I think I will stick with how it is and maybe think about it at a later date.

The bridge and deflector look to big for a ship of the excelsiors mass.

@Baz1017
Good shout on the bridge and deflector. Shrunk the Bridge a fair bit and reduce the dish only slightly - any smaller and it looked a little odd, but I am going to look at some reference and see where it goes.

You know, I think a TOS-style deflector inside the TMP-era Excelsior "deflector housing" might look pretty neat. If you make the deflector dish quite a bit smaller diameter (like the Excelsior deflector), and upright (not slanted as it currently is). Make the indentation on the hull circular, rather than the awkward "oval" of the TMP Excelsior, with it being narrower on the inside, and have a wider opening at the "mouth".

You have the makings of a great looking ship. Just would like to see more classic Excelsior style elements to it.

I also agree with your concept, that the ship might've been in use long before we see the first reveal in ST:3. The Miranda Class which is a contemporary to the TMP Constitution, is another one of those that must've been around already in TOS, and been refitted to similar standards by ST:2 (and beyond).

So here is a screengrab, done rather roughly based on the dish suggestions.

Im going to bevel the edge of the indent but I thought to get feedback first (all of which I appreciate!)

Think I will make the dish a bit thicker too.

*Burns voice* Excellent... :)

Yeah, a slightly thicker dish is definitely recommended. Essentially the same style and size as a TOS Constitution deflector, i'd assume. On another note, is the current neck "Final", or will you be giving it a more ribbed look like the original Excelsior? I don't want you to copy everything from the TMP Excelsior, for your TOS-era variant, but just a suggestion ;)

I want a neck very similar to the constitution class but at the same time the ribbed excelsior neck would be a nice block colour to have on the TOS version. I think il do some quick tests, perhaps have ribs partially on there.

Love it. Are those cutouts on the top of the nacelles for the warp grille? If your going for a pre TMP look, you could maybe rotate them 90 degree's to be on the inside of the nacelles.

The inset of the nacelle grills are a reference to the excelsior's nacelles. It deviates a bit from usual TOS nacelles but I do want some more unique features.

I want to play around with the neck a bit, looks oddly twisted at some angles.
