Cannot get past installation screen
« on: July 02, 2012, 01:53:40 AM »
Hi everyone,

Trying to install a clean copy of BC onto my computer, but when I hit "install", the menu closes, and nothing happens.

I've tried running the game in "Windows 95/administrator" compatibility mode, but no dice.

Here are my specs:

NVidia Geforce 580
Direct X 11.
Windows 7

Please help!

Thank you,
Van

Try to copy all the contents of the CD to a folder on your HDD, then intall with windows xp/administrator mode.

That did the trick. Thank you!

Unfortuantely, another issue has arisen...

Now I am stuck on the D3D error. Specifically, the  " D3D Render Creation error. Error String from Renderer was "" ". I've read about it in certain areas of this forum, but I can't seem to get the game to load. This error always comes up.

I haven't installed any mods (Maximum Warp, etc) yet. This is just BC with the 1.1 patch. And yet, I am receiving this error. Any ideas?

Once again, my specs are:

NVidia Geforce 580
Direct X 11.
Windows 7

Thank you.

Look for Options.cfg or something like that (don't have BC installed at the moment) and delete the file, might just be a glitch in the file.

The only options file I see is "Option.TGL" in the data directory. Unfortunately, deleting that did not help.

Any other ideas?

You're looking in the wrong place. The hidden Virtual Store folder is where it would be.

Users/Username/Appdata/Local/VirtualStore

Nothing in the virtual folder except for a Program Files (86x) folder.

I installed the game in C:\Activision directory. Could that have put it somewhere else?

errr ... nope, not any virtual folde I had in mind, you should look for it in main BC folder ;) if there the options file is not present then it wasn't generated yet ...

what's this Virtual Store folder anyway ?

its for UAC it protects files from unwanted change.

If you installed the game outside Program Files, it won't be virtualized (nothing will be found in the VirtualStore directory).

Please try rebooting your PC and see if that solves the problem.

Nope, unfortunately that didn't do the trick (rebooting). Should I try installing into the program files directory instead?

No, don't. Please check your hardware acceleration settings first, then I recommend doing a reinstall.

Max. If it's already on Max try lowering it.

Hmm...I don't think My NVidia GTX 580 allows me to change acceleration settings.

Am I basically dead in the water here?

Then try reinstalling, after doing that search your registry and delete all references to stbc.exe. Then reinstall.

No dice. The same darn issue...

Since deleting the options.cfg file does nothing, maybe altering it may help?

Looking over my options.cfg file, I seem some abnormalities. I'm pasting what's in the file below:

[Annoyances]
Quit Game Confirmation|0

[General Options]
Enhanced Glows|0
Tool Tips|1
Subtitles|1
Space Dust|1
Difficulty|1
Game Path=C:\Activision\SP_Modded\
Collisions|1
Collision Alert|1
Played Tutorial|1.000000
Captain Name-P l a y e r
Data Path=C:\Build
Specular Maps|1
Motion Blur|1
Glow Maps|1

[Graphics Options]
Texture Detail|2
Number of Lights|8
MipMaps|1
Display Depth|64
Display Height|600
LOD Skip|0
Visible Damage|3
Display Width|800
Fullscreen Mode|2
Effect Detail|3

[Sound]
StreamBufferSize|0
SFX Damping|0.500000
Voice Volume|0.800000
Voice Enabled|1
OutputRate|22050
Sound Enabled|1
Music|1
StreamMusic|1
Music Volume|0.600000
SFX Volume|1.000000
ProviderReserveList=LowQualitySoftware
OutputBits|16
StreamVoices|0

The game path is correct, but the data path is wrong. Could that be the problem? If so, where should it be directing, as I see no "build" folder to direct it to.

Thanks again.

Looks like I figured it out! The game path needed "stbc.exe". SUCCESS!!!  :yay:

Thank you all once again for your help.
