Excalibur | Ship Registries and Decals
« on: July 02, 2012, 05:10:07 AM »
Hi Folks,

Yesterday we posted a video made by Luke to demonstrate how our decal system works in Excalibur. I thought I would mirror the link over here as it is a great example of how we are aiming to make modding easier.

The method effectively projects a decal texture onto the hull which means:
  • The process is much quicker and can all be done in our sandbox HPE
  • We don't have to cut out the hull meaning we can apply the decals even in smoothed areas
  • There are no extra polygons added, and the decal texture is much smaller than the old id map

Question:  how do decals interact with illumination?

Ships still use glow maps, right?  Are decals placed on top of the glow map, or are they inserted in the hierarchy between the diffuse and glow, so that registry spots cover them?

Considering the British sort-of invented the language, I feel it's wrong to mock their accent. I enjoyed every bit of the video.

B5 seriously here is not the place ever....
Canon is what people argue exists on ships that don't exist.

This is really great Mark. My congratulations to you, John and the rest of the Excalibur team. I rarely get a chance to follow up on the progress of the Excalibur and I'm just more impressed each time I speak to John about the progress.

Many thanks for the positive comments everyone.

Question:  how do decals interact with illumination?

Excalibur has a full colour illumination map, they light the decals in the same way they light the base texture.
