why does this remind me of the Excelsior prototype?

Indeed.  Like the Akira, she is designed as a carrier.  (Notice the fighter concept as well.)  Compared to the Excelsior, she's about the same length, but she's bulkier.  Hence, she will be slower in speed and turning, but with excellent phaser arcs and torpedo coverage.  What every captain would want to take against Romulans.

I like how it's sort of an Excelsior version of the NX-Refit. Very cool looking ship.

Modeling has begun and I've decided on a name, Columbia class.  Reference should be fairly apparent. :P

Actually I named it for three things.  NX-02, the shuttle, and the female figure associated with the United States, but more importantly the western civilization values that she often symbolized.
