Single Player - Episode 7 Mission 1 - frieghters - need help

I've run out of patience redoing this mission.  My biggest complaint with this game is you have to retread so much if you fail at the end. 
Anyway, the freighters: can they be rammed?  Can you just knock out their impulse drives?  Is there something you can do besides destroy them with quantums?  I'm trying this on Admiral level, so 4 quantums will not destroy them. 

I may have to do like Kirk and reprogram the simulation...

have you not tried tractorbeaming them?

If you do, what happens?  Do you tractor each one and they stop?  Do you need to destroy them if tractored? 

Note I don't always survive the first part if the Kessoks decide to fire on me instead of the Enterprise.

Many folks tend to forget a tractor, can be quite a weapon.

I was tractoring them, so I don't follow what is so great about it.  I asked above if you ram them.  Do you tractor them into yourself?  Do you tractor them off course and then it is fine?

I guess the reason I am looking to have it spelled out rather than try it is that I have already done this mission several times and beating the ships prior to this is not certain at admiral level.

my guess would be to intercept them using "intercept" then get behind then tractor them disable their engines pick off some of the attacking ships then when you can finish them off?
