Increasing Ship Size/Scale
« on: July 07, 2013, 08:31:46 PM »
I searched the forum for a topic like this but couldn't find one..

I would like to either shrink the camera size that we view our ships from or increase the size of the ships in game.

I find the models to be waaaay too small in comparison to their TV/Movie counterparts and would like to UP the scale of the ships. I recall reading somewhere that if I start changing ship scales, the engine will crash etc. Is it possible to make a ship scale be larger than what modellers have already done and if so, how will it effect the engine in BC?

So you want to increase the scale of all ships by a certain amount? I don't really understand the purpose of this since it will look exactly the same in-game... Also, if you scale all of the ship models in your install, you will also have to manually move the location of every subsystem on every ship's hardpoint (not an easy task).

But to answer your question, you need to open each ship model with a 3D modeling program (such as 3DS MAX, or similar programs), scale the model to the size you want, then re-export it. You need to make sure your program can import and export bridge commander .nif files.

The appearance of the ship ingame wont change? Does the camera not add perspective the larger the ship is in game?

Why would you expect the appearance to change simply because an object is larger or smaller?

To explain why there would be no difference, consider these two screenshots I just took from my install:

This picture is of a Borg Cube.

This is another Borg Cube I have in my install. It is a different physical model so it doesnt look exactly the same as the above Cube.

By simply looking at these two ships, would you believe me if I told you that one of them was exactly double the dimensions as the other one? Would you be able to figure out which one was the larger one? The answer is probably NO, because there are no other frames of reference to compare the scales to.

So now do you see how increasing the physical size of a ship in game will not change how it looks to the player?

the only time I've ever seen any perspective is with the first person cams.

Anew, you know the sheer age of BC's engine.  this is NOT a modern game, and sure wouldn't use modern designing in it. from the way its so buggy, and the condition of the default models (and the patching, for pete's sake), this game was originally rushed out the door at warp nine...probably for Christmas or something.

Vonfrank is right, though, using the Borg Cubes as an example .  there IS a zoom on the cams, guys.  i have to back off using big ships, personally

there is a script aimed to fix that (by MLeo, I think.... but I doubt it actually works)... you basically write the name of the ship you want modified, and by what amount, and it will adjust the scale ingame when the ship is loaded.

it's scripts/custom/QBautostart/Rescale.py

This thread at BCS:TNG should also be useful re:  Rescale.

Just out of curiosity, how did you get your screen resolution so high?? And what HUD colors are you using?

My screen resolution is 1920 x 1080. Getting it so high can be difficult, I have 2 computers which run at 1080p but BC only works on one of them at this resolution, the other just refuses to start at that res, I don't know why. To do so you need to edit a bunch of files in your game directory. Follow the instructions in this link http://forums.filefront.com/st-bc-modding-editing/386237-widescreen-1680x1050-hack-howto.html but be warned, it still may not work.

As for my hud colours, it's my own personal mix. I prefer the overall blue tone to the default yellow or the KM orange.

SOME of us would like the trick on customizing the HUD colors, please.

Ordinarily, branching off into this new topic would be considered irrelevant to the original post, but since Anew9 is the one who brought it up in the first place, I guess it's ok.

In your main BC scripts directory go into the "LoadInterface.py" file (download the SDK if you don't have it). In the file there is a section that deals with the colours for all of the menu boxes as well as many other things. The section looks like this:

Code: [Select]

It takes some trial and error to completely determine which lines correspond to various HUD elements. Experiment with combinations to get what you like.

Here's my configuration if you like the blue in the screenshots:

Re: Increasing Ship Size/Scale

My screen resolution is 1920 x 1080. Getting it so high can be difficult, I have 2 computers which run at 1080p but BC only works on one of them at this resolution, the other just refuses to start at that res, I don't know why. To do so you need to edit a bunch of files in your game directory. Follow the instructions in this link http://forums.filefront.com/st-bc-modding-editing/386237-widescreen-1680x1050-hack-howto.html but be warned, it still may not work.
the lastest version of KM has widescreen support, including 1920 x 1080...
