what did you decide with the wings in the end?

Well, Im still not solid on whether or not Im going to keep the "spare tire" assembly off or on the wing, but for now it's off the wing. I figured I would leave it perhaps for now, post some pics when it is done, then see what folks think. Then if they want me to I can move them back onto the wing if needed.

For this and the larger birds, having the spare tire mounted to the fuselage might be more practical.

Yea, I now have two versions...one with the "spare tire" on the wings, the other on the hull. Not sure which one I prefer...here are pics of the completed model with the assembly on the wings.

I kind of like the vents on the ventral aft hull just before the impulse engine, might change them to be that way on the one with the "spare tire" on the hull. I also had another idea...might release this one, then make up a set of Darkfleet textures, add more guns to the spare tire on hull bird, and release her as a more powerful version of this class.

I think I definitely have to vote for having them on the wings, Makes the whole ship more solid and complete.

The hull version looks cool from the top and bottom (a bit like a flying batleth!), but the empty space bothers me from every other angle; It looks like something should be there if you know what I mean

Thanks for the comments guys. So far it looks like the votes are for wings instead of hull. Ill make sure something is on the wings for the Darkfleet version when I finish it.

Thanks Jimmy. Good to see you again.

I came up with yet another option, not sure why it didnt dawn on my before. I moved the "spare tire" on to the wing, but left the assembly on the hull. This had a few benefits...all facings seem filled, gaps where they should be, profile from the ventral hull still appears wide without the wings too loaded. Here are a few pics of this version so you guys can tell me what you think. I think this might be the one.

Hmm, that's not bad. Definitely better than the hull only version. Could we see a few more angles? Maybe some orthographic?

Sure, Ill give you schematic shots.

Note, in these shots I already lowered the rear assembly a bit considering how tall it was. So this the most recent build. I also added dual cannons port and starboard just forward of the wing pivot point.

Just a quick update, im dropping the assemblies even lower, so I can reduce the angle of the "spare tire" even more. Ill post pics of the changes when completed.

Ok, shes now pretty close to being completed. I reduced the height of the assemblies dramatically, so they are closer to the outline of the impulse drive. I also altered the textures behind the "spare tire" a bit to set it out more from the assembly I adjusted, and reduced their angle further to match better with the warp coils in front of them. It has a much cleaner look from port and starboard now, as well as fore and aft.

As you can see, as a result of lowering the height of the port and starboard assemblies, the ventral vents surrounding the impulse drive are much more prominent now. I also reduced the detail on the assemblies a bit, making them a bit less "busy", a bit cleaner in appearance. Removed quite a bit of polys in the process.

I think I prefer the original wing version just a little bit more, but looks like you've found a good compromise there

Appreciate the comments. I've hit a snag though. I'm really unsatisfied with the bridge area, the textures are very poor in that section, so I am redoing them. I increased the texture sample a bit. We'll see how it turns out.

Ok, redid the bridge area, much happier with it now. Here is how it looks now.

I'm going to clean up a few more spots, do a check pass for errors and this one should be ready for conversion. Then I'll work on a Darkfleet version.
