Title: DS9 Ops - bridge WIP from start to finish
Post by: Lurok91 on January 08, 2012, 05:18:27 AM
Realised I'd never done a project where showed work-in-progress from start to finish, I guess mainly because most bridges done to now been modding/variations of existing bridges.  So here's my first start-to-finish thread for anyone who wants to follow and make helpful suggestions or ask any sensible questions (modelling, texture, etc)   :)

This will be quite a long-term endeavour as the level of production detail on this set is quite staggering and I want to try and replicate it as closely and authentically as possible, so it's going to take quite a while. Thanks for your patience  :)

I've started with studio floorplans so it's as canon as possible and have built the basic structure from that.

Oooh, the interest is... overwhelming  :P   But I shall persevere...

With basic floor/wall structure done, rescaled bridge to fit BC bipeds and modelled key crew stations.  What I'll probably do is get all the key structural elements in place - stations, stairs, lifts etc - then begin to refine.

You know, I think you're right.  Sweeeeet.

EDIT: Waaaaiiiiit....I don't know why, but for some reason...it looks like...the command deck of the NSEA Protector?

Ooohhh!  DS9's ops is finally underway!  I'll be watching this thread.   :D

Shadowknight--it isn't the protector.  Tiq sent me a full set of widescreen caps and so on for the Protector.  it's rigged kind of like the Generic Bridge Module on BCfiles.  besides, you can tell from the lavender colored piece on the right of the screencap that that's the DS9 ops lift (and the view seems to be from sisko's office)

btw, don't forget to add the Baseball on a stand if you do Sisko's office (and maybe the Daedalus model *hinthint*)

So this would be the first starbase bridge in BC and DS9 to boot. Now that's a real feather in your cap. Looking forward to watching it progress... Honestly I'm surprised it hasn't been done only took 10 friggin years  :funny
Title: Re: DS9 Ops - bridge WIP from start to finish

I think one of the reasons it maybe hasn't been tried before is the level of architectural/production detail is very high and probably others haven't thought it worth the effort to make authentic.  I'll try my best though it may take a few months, and I'll try and get in as much detail (within reason) as I can from screencaps/series, etc.

I remember another one in BCC has trying to make something similar in the past. his build a Tos starbase ops bridge finished ingame. but his never release it because don't have lightmap and other thing.

Lurok i have a good reference of DS9 Ops (no DVD Screencaps). If you want I can send you.

I highly suggest checking out doug drexler's blog for this one. he has several blog posts where he took snapshots of ops before they destroyed the set.

Any good ref (blueprints etc) welcome.  Don't worry about screencaps as have plenty (entire DS9 1-7 on DVD!).

Done already  :)

lol! phew, you gave me a fright! I thought I'd missed something there.

Excellent work, as per usual, Mr. Lurok.

KCS, I believe the view is from the viewscreen - the green ramp at the back would be the steps up to Sisko's office, and the pit at the bottom of the picture is O'Brien's tinkering hole.

At this stage, continuing to refine basic structure and scale elements to BC bipeds while beginning to model additional parts like Jadzia's desk, Engineering, transporter, turbolift etc.  What I find easiest to do when creating element like, say, a console with lots of angles and planes, is to export rough version from bridge so keeps same position; model and refine as standalone element; then import back into bridge.

Looking very good. Having bots come in and out of turbolifts in Ops is going to be difficult, have you thought about having one beam in? It happened in at least one episode and would be a nice change
Title: Re: DS9 Ops - bridge WIP from start to finish

Actually bots shouldn't be that difficult (famous last words  :)).  At least in principle.   Some work on engineering side.

Can see it being a timing night mare but instead of lift door animation just have the whole life move with the biped animation up and down prior to the walking cycle.

So agree in principle should be straight forward.

Luckily Ops does have at least one normal walk in entrance and the COs office could be used as another

Magnificent work so far! Very recognisable, even at this early stage.

Are you planning on modelling Sisko's office?

Yes but will probably be last thing.  Looks fairly easy to do as quite spare from reference material: desk, chair, window, couple of screens at side.  Significant things are the details:  the baseball, the ship models (Saratoga?  and another one I think)

the other ship is the Daedalus. and then there is also that funky space clock from that one episode where the crew gets paranoid and turn on each other.

Quote from: Me from your SP Mod thread
I know it's off topic here and you're not even close to this phase in that project but while we're on the subject of characters on viewscreens I had an idea for your DS9 Ops set that you may find kind of cool.  Might be do-able with the skill you've shown.  I'll post the details over there.
So like I was saying over there, the whole Data/Brex in the engine room from the SP campaign gave me an idea for Kiska's placement on your Ops set.  I know I'm thinking of step 800 and you're only on 10 or 11, but I thought I'd spit it out while it's in my head and I have the time.

In E3M1 you can call Brex just by pressing F5 and you'll see him in the engine room.  Do you think it could be do-able for Kiska in Ops?  Press F1 and she pops up on the viewscreen on say the Defiant?  It would definitely give your set here a unique flavor and I'm sure if anyone can pull it off you can.  Anyways, just an idea.  Like I said, I know I'm thinking way far out right now, just getting it out before I forget.  :)

Hmmm, interesting idea.   :)   Definitely do-able, but think would need to work with JB2005 on this - he seems the current king of character/script mods.   I was thinking be nice to have setup where any capital ships that approach, you call up viewscreen and relevant captain appears:  Card on Galor, Rom on Warbird, Klingon on BoP etc.

Now put SP mod to one side been able to return to Ops, and some new renders.  Everything's still all WIP and placeholders, though fair bit may end up in final.  Rear Engineering console was a tough one to get right, with all the faces and angles but quite please how turned out  :)   Please, no nerd comments re: "that bit not right", "that lcar doesn't go there", etc.   Folks can have their say when finish first draft  :D   But if anyone wants to ask 'how did you do that?', 'how did you make that?',  cool

Thanks for all the kind words   :)  As I'm trying to get it as close to canon as can (?), just think it's ok so far but glad people seem to like it.  It's a bugger to do, though  :D  Been on a massive DS9 rewatch to get screencaps, and as soon as think got something right, suddenly find 'oh, it's meant to be like that', so all gets changed. Anyway, gives me summat to do in spare time...

Lurok, as usual I have some good DS9 sound effects for when you get to that stage, including the genuine DS9 red alert sound that I personally extracted a while back.  ;)   If you'd like I'd be happy to send them over; I've been using them for the Galor bridge for some time.

Thanks,N  :)  Be a while though before at that stage. But send anyway.  In meantime just some more WIP.  The rails were a right pain in the a**.  And I can see the viewscreen being a challenge.  At this stage most of the basic elements in place (roof has been done separately) , so apart from finishing off furniture and that engineering arm, most of work now going to be lots of mesh vertex and texture tweaking.

LOL @ Jimmy & King Class Scout :P

I get bored every now and then. I only start yapping when I see exceptional works being produced, and Lurok's w.i.p.'s have certainly caught my attention. I know c2x tried to convert this set way back when, but did not know how to open the DS9 the Fallen's .DMS file, that was back in 2003.

@Lurok:

I have a theory, On how you can work around the OPS's main viewscreen issue. Make the OPSviewscreen.NIF mesh oval, just slightly larger than the OPS viewscreen, and apply it that way. It should resolve the rectangular issues.

I never had any dealings with Dasher42, but Foundation is the bases for BC modding. One would not be able to make any mods for BC without it.

Back then, by 2003, I believe the Dreamyards Nebula, Defiant, NX-01, Excalibur and Intrepid bridge sets were out. I known guys, (myself included) who have experimented with porting Unreal Tournament maps and Elite Force: II sets too Bridge Commander. You would be surprised what people don't show publicly.

Lurok's work on the OPS sets for example, is the closest I've seen to date, that surpasses the DS9: the Fallen set. I can't wait to see the finished product! For me, personally- It will be the final jewel in my DS9FX Xtended install :)

I'm really excited about Lurok's work, because I remember a time,(as I'm sure you do) when we had NO modded Bridges, only a ton of retextures of the Galaxy & Sovereign sets. I've been around since before the BC was released, when BCU was BCN in 2001. Now, those things people claimed what was impossible- well kinda is, lol. @Lurok: Nice update :)

On the subject of the models in Sisko's office, It should not be hard to find low-poly versions. It's just a question of which modder's version. MadJohn did a low poly I.S.S. (International Space Station), Captain Elgy's CE Proto Nebula Class (Melborne Variant) should not blow up anyone's install. On the Saratoga model, I'd suggest the one released by the SFRD team.

Couldn't find ISS on BC Files.  Anyone got a link?

Just wanted to double-check on Sisko's ships also. From screencaps, looks like he has the ISS on right hand side (from doorway) unit,   Miranda/Saratoga on left.    I think I've also seen a Nebula, and a Daedalus but not sure if there all the time...

Yeah, spamming my own thread.  Anyway, was beginning to wonder as reaching last phase of WIP whether polycount and mostly big textures might be handicap in BC.  So decided time to try and see if could port into game.  First test pics below.   Obviously this is un-lightmapped (and unfinished) so will look much better when finished.  Just to give a sense of game space.  The viewscreens just hacked out for moment but it was just to see how/if could work.  The only real major pain I've noticed is that if start player off in Sisko seat,  when you walkfx  you drop down halfway on engineering level floor - except for some odd reason at rear eng section  :idk:     So eyeball height only really works on Sisko level and situation table floor. But you can drop into pit  :P    It would also be nice to figure a way to have player anim-activate opening office doors but not sure this is poss in BC.   But then, famous last words.  And it was only at this stage I suddenly realised: what hell do with Kiska?   "Course, captain?"   Like, where?  Mouth of wormhole?  Back to Bajor?   So just stuck at rear science for now.   Hopefully JB2005's comm officer mod might spruce things up.

Anyway, pics hopefully speak for themselves....

I know, right. I heard the same thing about the Type: XI shuttle. :P

I can honestly say, I would have never expected anyone attempt an DS9: OPS set. It was not for the lack of trying, lol. :P
I know, I'm not the only one in saying that these sets Lurok's making, are very inspirational to BC modding in general. Enough for me to start releasing some stuff, I've been holding for two years or more.

You can thank Lurok's w.i.p's for that ;)

I can field this one if it's all good.  I'm sending Lurok some sounds that include the actual DS9 red alert sound effect and other sounds from DS9 that I've compiled over the years.  All the audio should be authentic or very close to it. :)

Mind-blowing, Lurok! Your best work yet!

As for the animating doors, maybe drop Lost_Jedi aka LJ a line, over at the Excalibur forums, he had door triggers for the turbolift doors in a beta of immersion that he gave me back in the day. Perhaps he could hack out that code for you...

@Lurok: Nice update :)

BR32

it should be noted, the version of the ISS in his office is not the current configuration, it's a model of an earlier design.

The link I showed Lurok at Celestia Motherload has the I.S.S. in ALL configurations, or various stages of construction.
It's Lurok's choice to reference. ;)

No Problem, I knew there was an I.S.S. variants out there on that particular site. Never bothered to download them though. :P

I guess next step is to experiment with red alert states (shouldn't be too much of a pain)  and turbo/extra/anims (which will be).

that would be really awesome if you can figure out red alert statuses...
if you do, hopefully youll be able to go back and add that function in to the bridges youve already done and remove the map swapping aspects which youve used for the effect of red alert flashing :)

The ship models and baseball are there in version working on at mo.  Figured as Sisko left it behind, perhaps subsequent Fed and Bajoran commanders kept it as memento/relic of the Emissary  :)

Got a low-poly ISS from Nasa site.  Baz did offer to do a low-poly Saratoga last year but figure prob too busy now  :D.  Any other takers/recommendations welcome.

looking really good!!!

fyi, from what i recall, the walk fx issue you mention is easily fixed. Walk fx uses the lowest face as the floor level. therefore if you have multiple floor levels, they cannot overlap when you look at it from top down view. if they do, it uses the lowest face which can make it appear that they player is part way through the floor. each part of the floor must be the lowest object in that area. if that makes sense?

Thanks, Sean     I'd deduced that was the problem, but nice to have it confirmed.  I'm pretty sure I know what was causing issue and how to fix.

EDIT:  So I've removed most of the major lower planes that were causing 'dip',  so can now walk around engineering and transporter levels. Knocked up a little low poly Daedalus for the other cabinet too, so all done.

Welcome to the BCC Community :hi:

Normally, resurrecting a 6 year old thread is frowned upon, as people usually expect the Author to update a necro thread.

The DS9 OPS bridge set is apart of the DS9FX Xtended 10th Anniversary mod, yet to be released.

I THINK it's supposed to be over with the ISS model, or in the windowsill.  I distinctly remember a closeup shot where it was over his left shoulder in the BG.  the SFRD version of the Daedalus is based on Sisko's model, if needed.

Lurok did add the Daedalus model, it is to the left entrance in Sisko's office;  it's low poly. I'll post a pic of it shortly...

Since you're being so nice. You've been awarded with access to DS9FX Beta.

Forum should be visible near the end. Check the stickies for info on how to obtain it. Should be very easy.
