Stay safe :)

Anyone feel that the world has gone insane?

That feeling began in earnest, on November 8th 2016. Not just because of what happened on that particular date, but the overall feeling of the world "going to hell" in general, and we're just along for the ride. To most people, the current pandemic is more or less a "severe flu", but not necessarily fatal. The way the media is treating the story, you'd think we're in the end times, or Armageddon. We've weathered worse. This too shall pass.

Leaders in various countries have been encouraging people to "self isolate", which from my understanding means to: Stay at home, avoid contact with other people if possible. Or as I told my brother recently, "business as usual". I'm not an outdoors-y kinda person, and currently unemployed. Staying at home and avoiding contact with others is second nature to me at this point :P

Personally, my world went insane when my Grandpa died in September last year. Since then a whole fuck of a lot of shit has happened only making my mental health so much worse. I've hit my rock bottom so far in my life. Legit.

I was supposed to go to a metal concert on the 14th this month (Black Label Society). The virus had other things in mind :/
Being forced to self isolate is messing with me even more, because while social anxiety sucks the big one, I still like to go outside my house once in a friggin while.

I went to walmart yesterday to find the place in damn disarray. I have never seen so much stuff gone. And people hoarding paper products just piss me off to no end. The virus doesn't even cause ass issues you absolute cunts, ffs.

So thats how I'm doing. Angry at people hoarding, Depressed beyond belief, and a hellova lot of other emotions. I hope you guys are doing/will do better than I.

there's a complication on my part I have to worry about

I'm the entire Janatorial department for a packing plant that keeps mentally and physically disadvantaged people working and provides containers for supply plants in the area, mostly powdered metal parts manufacturers.  since the crew is, of course, in the vulnerable group, health and human services shut us down.  my second job is keeping the cleaning up for tourist rentals.

the complication is, I'm rural; except for already established items, every bill paid must be taken care of physically due to a lack of infrastructure.  after all, they're only gonna wave things for so long, and soon, Capitalist thinking is gonna start screaming for their due money.

tbh I feel like shit's hitting the fan on my end. This whole coronavirus bullshit has my dad in such an uproar that he's gone completely stir-crazy and scared for his life. Not really a good thing to have on your conscience.

Now, I'm a mad. There was an earthquake in Zagreb (Croatian capitol). Several people died and 15 injured.
Now the authorities are telling people to stay in their houses and it has left me wondering what houses? Some people have lost roofs over their heads. WTF are they talking about, have they lost their god damn freaking minds. It's like this world needs a freaking reset button.
I keep hearing corona is the bigger threat not the earthquake at the moment, yeah say that to affected people (from your god damn warm office or house or hotel where ever they're situated temporarily).

PA update.  all non "life-sustaining" businesses are now shut down, here, as of 8 AM, with the state governor contemplating an Italian Lockdown.  Philly and its suburbs are jet black with covid cases, which is why.

I just heard about the Quake on FB this morning.  there's more fear tied to COVID-19 than there is to a quake.

and if you haven't noticed, Covid IS the 'reset button'

Yeah, I can gurantee there was more fear due to the earthquake and the fact people were thinking where they would spend the night.

and if you haven't noticed, Covid IS the 'reset button'

No smartass that's not the sort of reset button I was referring to. One that will cause an economic recession where more people will potentially die than the virus itself.

more fear for the people outside the quake zone that hears about it.

Covid is a cultural reset button, and appears to be turning into an environmental reset button.  been seeing a lot more critters than usual.

my stepfather, a depression recovery kid, is seeing a full-on "Great Depression II" on the horizon.

meanwhile, I'm self-isolating because my parents have been health compromised for a few years already.  I'm literally the only one here.  my stepfather's kids are also in the vulnerable group, being old enough for it, and I'm right on the edge, myself.

That's the sort of reset button that we don't need. Environmental effects it has are only temporary.

Covid is an blown out of proportion disaster made by morons who have no things better to do. Unfortunately in today's society it seems the more incompetent you are the better position you get (worldwide).

Is it dangerous? Of course it is.
Is it more dangerous than the flu? A tiny fraction (if you factor in individuals who were not tested but are "sick". They lack any clear symptoms)
Could this whole thing have been done better? Of course as soon as a new virus was detected prevent its spread. You know take actual active measures to lockdown strategically when you detect first cases.
Can anything be done differently now? Stop with the whole quarantine BS and strategically quarantine areas that actually need it. People who violate the rules should be put under guarded quarantine (provision hotels and what not for that). Don't overload the hospitals with mild cases (which some countries are).

The only question is how bad it will be. Things can be remedied I suppose, plans like what Denmark has can help minimize the economic crisis to come. However more people will die from starvation in this crisis than the virus itself.

ugh, what did I type with the first line?  even I don't get that, now :P

there's a name for what you're describing for leaders.  it's called The Peter Principle; "the cream rises to the top until it sours".  unfortunately, the generation that could potentially replace that and take care of business is burned out already.  I know early 50 somethings that are already saying "screw this, I'm retiring" because they were raised with the belief that the only way to get anywhere is to work 18 hour days, and they're getting tired.

considering how bad the "Great Recession" was in '08, Great Depression II would be a whopper.  I agree with the potential starvation deaths; people seem to be going into Survivor (the TV show) mode.

I'll just say that we as humanity have a lot of luck. If this thing was more deadly we would be in some serious and deep shit right about now and no measures in the world would save us. As all of measures came too late.

I wonder if we'll see better preparedness as a result of this for new viruses that crop up in the future?
I wonder if we'll see pharmaceutical companies invest into actually useful things rather than investing time and resources in viagra :P? We need new antibiotics, new approach to dealing with viruses, new way to deal with superbugs. Yet over the past 2 decades R&D is at an all time low in these areas.
I wonder if people will be held accountable for blowing this out of proportions and fear mongering?
I wonder if people will be held accountable for profiteering?
I wonder if governments will try to save the private sectors in their own nations?

Probably the answer to all the questions is no.

I agree with all of that.  as long as there are people out that that only think with their wallets...
unfortunately, most of the alternatives have been tainted by people who've botched the job.
