Title: A test for you all
Post by: Mark on August 05, 2006, 11:24:08 AM
ok guys, I want to test out a high polygon bridge on as many pcs as possible to see what kind of level we can push this to.

I have modified the enterprise A bridge by adding a load of high poly sovereign chairs to it... the bridge is now just under 14k.

You will need the enterprise A 1.5 bridge installed, and dont worry about backing things up as this includes all you need.

I want ALL levels of pcs to be tried please, so please dont think that if you dont have a geforce 6800 or better theres no point... because we just dont know if thats the case or not.

Code: [Select]
TEST: This is a test to see how various PCs will cope with a high polygon bridge in game.

REQUIRES: Enterprise A Bridge v1.5

DESCRIPTION: This works by adding some high polygon chairs from ef2 onto the enterprise A bridge, the new bridge is 13,000 polies which is about twice the average bridge polycount.

CREDITS: TiM for his great quality chairs.

ANY PROBLEMS: Please leave a post at BCC telling us how the game ran with this installed.

INSTALLING: copy the contents of the Install Folder into you bc base directory.

UNINSTALLING: copy the contents of the Uninstall Folder into you bc base directory.

Update: Tests complete, thanks to everyone that took part

No framerate differences on my end with my crappy PC.

1.7 GHz Pentium 4
512MB RAM
ATI Radeon 7000 64MB Vid Card >_> (don't judge me)

right ill try adding another 10 seats, should push the count to 20k, id expect some lag then...

id consider a radeon7000 low end really so im going to keep pushing till we get serious slow down

im trying to discern 2 things really... firstly how the game might be affected by higher poly characters.. secondly how far we can push the bridge limit up to.. tbh anything above 12k should be enough. If the 20k test seems ok then i will try to get those ef2 characters in game, maybe with a recommended system spec.

Ok, I tested it too, no noticable lag, minus that it took some 15secs to switch from tac to bridge view.

Specs: AthlonXP 1.7+, gig of DDRAM, GF4MX440

If its possible to knock the polycount up to 20k, will you make any changes to released or wip bridges?...

No changes. Works fine infact, and, I love those chairs...

2.0 GHZ, 4 GB Ram (2.75 Recognised because windows hates me), ATI X850 256MB

As bridges are not physics objects in the game engine and there is no proximity trigger active on the bridge set it makes sense that you could push the polies abit more for bridge models than you could for ships.

I thought it was the large textures that caused the greater lag as opposed to polies anyway?

Post by: Rat Boy on August 05, 2006, 09:48:50 PM
Radeon 9000
3.20 Ghz Pentium 4
512 MB RAM

No faster or slower than the regular Ent-A v2.  I agree that the limiting factor is the size of the textures used.  The difference between the Normal Textures of the Nemesis bridge vs. the High Textures is staggering.  Mind if I ask if using the RPG-X seats implies that there's going to be an improved version of an existing bridge model?

Yeah textures do make or break the games performance even with my more or less low end video card, I can have ton's of high poly ships just with some slightly reduced texture sizes and have it run perfectly.

No, not yet at least, the main reason I'm doing this is for future bridges and also for crew models.

That sounds like 20k is hitting high, them.

Well Mark, i can't try it as i'm out of bc in my HDD, but i used EF2 characters (Borg) as a full replacement before with no lags, even with the old FX5200 128mb Card

a 9800 is more then two years old so im not suprised, although im really trying 23000 to see whether we could go for high poly bridges AND characters

Mine's still the 9200 and it runs fine, loading times a bit longer but theres practically no lag...

This made me laugh though...

thats the 13k one, the 22k one has chairs on the roof.

and yes thats because of the material colour in 3dsmax

damn, wrong rar file, just a minute...

EDIT: yep its fine, the lag is slightly more but its still playable without trouble...

wow all those chairs look funny lol

ok just tried it out the higher poly, and there was no real lag or issues on my end...  midway thru a QB battle it started to lag just slightly, as my and the enemy ship took on damage and such, but other than that it was pretty much playable :)
i expected like major lag or long loading time, but it wasnt really the case with all the extra chairs...

add another dozen!  let's push it into the wall!  :D

I got a very small amount of lag but nothing utterly horrible on my PC, only thing noticible was a slight increase in loading time but then again nothing to worry about. :D

Gave her a whirl again, still nothing really noticable.  Seems promising... and here I was thinking it was about time to upgrade the old beast. ;)

I would test it, but my BC install is all messed up atm (see my tech support thread on BCU).  Once that's resolved, I'll happily give you feedback.

Maybe it would help if you guys said waht resalution you were running at?

I run at 1280x1024 i got a slight 5-6 fps drop, bit not noticable on the lower poly one and a 7-9 fps drop on the one with the chairs on the ceiling.

Radeon x700pro 256mb
pentiume 4 3.1 GHZ (or 3.01)

no that wouldnt help at all, the point of this is to see how it affects your game play... if we tell you to tune down your settings then we're not finding that out are we.

i tested mine at 1600x1200 with 8x antialiasing and 4xAF because thats what i normally play at, and i wouldnt want to have to drop those settings for a mod.

Ran it again with the higher model and the same specifications mentioned in my last post.  No discernable difference; ran like it usually does on that bridge.

Ran fine for me with the highest model, altough i do have the lower textures downloaded.

ATI radeon 9200se 128 mb
768 mb ram
AMD x86 family 6 model.

I must say that some recent mod (either to the game, or my system) has had a very negative effect on BC's performance on my system. However:

20k model on a 2.6ghz intel pentium 4 with 1280mbs of ram and a radeon 9600 128mb graphics card.
~20fps, significantly lower if the viewscreen is visible.
The regular Abridge runs at about 25fps.

EDIT: and a suggestion: slap a  "Variable Gravity Environment" sticker on the wall like in the shuttle bay of the enterprise-d, for the laugh. this is a very funny bridge!

works great
i noticed litttle change and if their was any it was when  first viewing the bridge.

Inspiron e1505
1.6 Centrino Duo
1 gig of ram shared
1280 * 800

Btw this laptop runs BC VERY well!

Not to resurrect old threads but it worked Great no slow downs and didn't notice anything but bigger chairs.
Ran several battles on high color, 1024x768 res with 15 ships fighting around a starbase using the kobayashi maru mod.

My specs -
AMD ATHLON 2.8GHz
RAM: 2.0GHZ DDR3
VIDEO: NVIDIA GEFORCE 6600GT GDDR3 256MB GPU

Hope that helps.

no lag here, I have a fairly new comp though
Pentium D Dual core 32
1 GB DDR2 RAM+4gb VRAM
GForce 7600
settings maxed out at 1280x1024 res High Color depth, graphics card in T&L mode, no mipmaps, AA on 6x. etc.

The chairs looked nice on that bridge, I wouldn't mind seeing an Ent A bridge with those chairs instead of all the regular ones.

theyre sovereign bridge chairs, not ST6

Anyways i think weve got all the results we need, thanks to everyone that helped
