Title: Leonidas Class USS Raptor -- Now Available @ BCFiles
Post by: DJ Curtis on September 19, 2007, 09:21:35 PM
When i started talking about the Delta series of ships that I'd be working on over the summer, I hinted that I might do a sort of Nebula style ship to go along with the Century Class and its friends.

Well, I had some inspiration and have been working on this here and there for the last few days.  Though it's not in the pix, the ship will carry a pod, but I'll do two models... one with and one without.

I also decided to reuse the nacelles from the Vivace Class.  Not only did they seem to fit well with the ship's design, it saved me a bunch of time. :D  Nacelles are always an area I have little creativity, so when I do some decent ones, I may as well get some mileage out of them.  Besides, lots of Starfleet ships reuse nacelles too, so i feel vindicated. lol.

Anyways, I've still a bunch of detail I want to model on to the ship, but it's pretty well fleshed out as you see it.

edit: btw Mark, I thought I'd try out the board's new PNG support.  it looks good.

It looks like something I can't put my finger on.

I love the way the saucer echoes the nebula class.

But the design REALLY reminds me of something, which is not to say I don't like it, it kicks ass!

There's a bit of runabout influence on the top of the engineering hull, too. Very nice ;)

Whoa! DJ, I think that's my favorite design of yours yet! Please tell me that's supposed to be a next gen replacement for the Akira class.

That ship looks like she has fangs, and can dance when she bites.

I'll be keeping real close tabs on this baby. I might even reinstall BC just to see it fly.

It looks a whole lot like Queball's unfinished Repulse class.  However there is an appriciable amount of differences in the two designs.  Such as the deflector being in the standard configuration here, instead of being above the saucer on the Repulse, among others.  An inspiration possibly?

Looks like a hybrid of a Galaxy, Akira and a Vivace class. Very cool indeed.

if that's the grandson of the Akira, I'd keep its japanese-themed name.
hmmm, Yamato class?

Whoa.. I think I designed that ship about 5 years ago.  Well, sort of.  Very similar, but I had the warp pylons mounted higher, around a large weapons pod.  I'd always planned on calling it the Katana class, I think that would work nicely (unless someone's used it.. I've been kinda out of the loop).

Edit: Found one of my old drawings, k, so it's not that similar.  I later redid the nacelles, and swept them back.  I like your layout better though, much cleaner design.

You know, the similarities are fairly amazing. The Katana looks as though it could be a follow-on to the Akira, later to be replaced by the "?-class" WIP-ship.

I can not get enough of your ships DJ...sometimes I wish that we could clone you and have you do all the canon ships that are already in BC...maybe we could make androids instead...they don't need sleep :)

Looking very nice so far and I can't wait to put her in my fleet.

Superb ship DJ, an excellent start!!. You were right about those Nacelles, they fit in with this design nicely. Resembles an Akira with the saucer and secondary hull, but I can also see echoes of the Nebula and NX Class ships in this design!!.

Also what type of ship will this be, exploratory, surveyor, cruiser, dreadnought etc.

So... the Delta Series of starships grows yet again, you have our thanks DJ!!.  8)

WOW!!! This is indeed a VERY nice design. I think I love it even more that your Century Class. The one without the pod could indeed be a very good replacement for the Akira Class.

Keep up the good work DJ

Pure awesomeness DJ. Trying to snag the next "modder of the month" award by chance? :D

Seeing as this is probably part of the "Delta" project, would it not be possible to re-use some of the textures off your Century Class for this ship, albeit remapped and new details added etc? My point being, so that you don't have to make new textures from scratch.

An excellent design DJ, how about naming it the Valor class with ships like

USS Valor
USS Honorable
USS Virtuous
USS Truthful

and so on, so on, just a suggestion
Title: Re: Unnamed WIP
Post by: Technerd89 on September 20, 2007, 02:12:05 PM
WOW  thats fantasic. perhaps scale the nacelles larger slightly, the rest of the ship seems to dwarf them. i like how the secondary hull sweeps upwards instead of down like a sovereign. it kindof hints to a possible enterprise-j design precursor

That's what I was thinking. If one simply borrowed textures and such from previous models, build time could be reduced.

That looks awesome.

Just an idea I had but what would it be like if the nacelle pylons went straight out instead of dipping down? But keeping the nacelles in roughly the same distance out from the main body.

Can't wait for this DJ :D

sounds majestic lol

would fit as a replacement for the akira, but some 50 years after it, maybe CG's Katana class should be the middle step.
the Akira is relatively new to Starfleet, so it has life ahead of it.

I don't know why, but I feel the saucer too wide. can be the angle, tho.
the bridge module and the hull are nicely done.

If I'm not mistaken, that would go against Gene Roddenberry's established rules for creating Trek ships. IIRC, the nacelles aren't supposed to be hidden behind the hull of the ship, when viewed from the frontal aspect.

That said, I'm not a Treker canonicity freak, like most other TOS'ers my age, and I am of the perspective that if it looks better, so be it...

I'm glad you guys like the ship.  To be honest, it really doesn't take long to do a mesh like this.  Really just a few hours.  It's the texturing that takes time.

As far as borrowing textures from the Enterprise, believe me, I will.  But I'll still have to make 90% of it from scratch.

As far as name goes, I'm not sure about a Japanese name.  I'm not an anime fan so I never like the name Akira class to be honest.  But maybe.

Who said it had to be about Anime DJ, why not go for something historical, Hiroshima Class perhaps?  Or Tokyo.  Either way Japanese names aren't that bad :).

Katana-class would be a clich?, so not that. I do agree since it looks Akira-like it would be fitting if having a japanese shipname, but that's just me. ;) I'd either way strongly advise to not call it Kamikaze-class for errr, obvious reasons. :P

Some random japanese related class-names:

Shogun-class
Honshu-class

Tancho-class
Yamamoto-class
(Tsu)nami-class
Maijin-class
Bushido-class

well, considering that Kamikaze actually means divine wind, not suicide attack as some believe, I would leave that on the table.  Other than that there is the Kongo, Shokaku, Akagi or the Kaga,  additionally you could use the same style name as the Akira and pick a name from some anime

Yes I know, but a majority of people don't and that'd leave a bad impression. ;) It's described as gods or their powers or such, had to do with Japan being what it is today?

Heh, it's probably my fault, for saying the design reminded me of the Akira, and hoping that it would be a follow-on to that ship class.

Oddly enough, it seems as though a Japanese name fits it very well. She reminds me of a skilled warrior-poet, and Japan's feudal warrior class lends itself nicely to what I think the finished product will become.

no, you were right. it does fit as a heir of the Akira.

it's just too advanced for an inmediate successor, that's why I said CG's Katana should go first, despite it seems it won't.
Title: Re: Unnamed WIP
Post by: MLeo on September 21, 2007, 05:16:01 PM
How about this?
An additional serie (or group), such as the Delta series (but not part of, unless, of course, as a subgroup).

This time, a group of 3, the Katana, the wakizashi or sh?t? (I suggest the first one, since for the second there is no direct support in game :P) and the tanto.
Here, the Katana would be the heavy class, the wakizashi the medium class and the Tanto the light class.

Any chance you'll release that model for BC aswell? Along with your new WIP, it would look awesome in a small strike force.

Also, how about 'Sentinel Class'? You must be getting tired of hearing japanese type class names by now.

He actually gets more sleep than I do.  (But I'm also awake part of the night to breastfeed the baby.  :P)

He's very quick and stealthy though.  One minute he'll have a blank screen in front of him and then I'll read the news on my computer, then I'll look over and *BAM* he'll have this whole mesh thing worked out.

If he ever decides to like texturing, there are also a few dozen ships of his just waiting for it. (Periodically he tries to convince me to take up texturing, but I know crazy when I see it)

Your ship is plenty good too. I hope someone (or you) gets around to making it soon.

Hey Dj, have you thought about placing 2 vivace nacelles together at the point you currently have your pylon attached to and standing it up on edge or 45 degree? (basicly you have a single nacelle.) I don't know what ship you could use such a thing on but it'd be wild to see. Certainly I'm not suggesting it here...

The ship is actually quite big.  I've put it up against my Galaxy Class to compare window and bridge sizes, and the ship is at least 400 meters long and 25 decks tall.

heh, have a look at this sweet registry.

Awesome, well done DJ.

Seems rather large for a ship like that, though. I always imagined her to be a bit smaller, like equal or lesser than the Akira. Still, that's pretty cool. What'll her role be, do you think?

Would like to point out that the estimated size of the Akira Class is around 465 meters (according to DITL), which makes the Raptor a smaller ship then the Akira, albeit slightly ;)

okee, by popular demand, here's a brief update.

I didn't change the shape at all, just added some details, mostly along the spine, though there are a few little things done to the saucer and underside of the secondary hull as well.  You can also see I've started working on more textures.
Title: Re: USS Raptor
Post by: Aeries on January 27, 2008, 12:12:38 AM
I'm really liking this, your attention to detail is superb.
Of particular note is your attention to detail on the mount where the pod will me (I recall a post regarding a pod that will be mounded on this?)

In any case, superb work. Perhaps, too, the undersides of the Nacelle Pylons may need some little details? Maybe you just haven't gotten that far, yet... :P

Well, she's an excellent addition to BC, and she fits in perfectly with your other ships.

Lovely work on the texturing so far, and I really like the details on the spine.  I do have a question, on the sides of the secondary hull, near the back where it curves up into the spine, there is some kind of extrusion from the hull on each side, what is that?

Very nice work DJ, I really like the new hull details and the new positioning of your regs, perhaps each separate dorsal registry could have a separate alpha channel glow coming from the center of the saucer!?.

I do have a "minor" comment regarding the mesh. Looking at the ship from the underside in the third pic, the nacelle pylons look a little bit long to me, which makes them more vulnerable too. Maybe shortening them by 15-20% would make the ship look even better and more compact at the same time.  :D

If your happy with thats all that matters of course, just me nitpicking again!!

I like the longer one. The wider wedge shape gives the impression that the vessel is fast and maneuverable, able to make tight "kick" turns within it's own length. And the overall look of the vessel sort of reminds me of the Akira, ( one of my favorite Canon designs, ) which also had a wedge-type profile from the front, and side aspect angles.

I honestly think the longer Pylons are better.   When I think "Raptor" I think it should have a bit more of a menacing feel to it, so a Wider Wing Span would get that point accross.   Just my opinion though, the ship looks great either way.

EDIT.

Going back and forth between longer or shorter..........I'll pick slightly longer pylons, because it balances the overall shape of the ship.  If they were shorter, the saucer would look a little big.  Also everyone should do a "magic-eye" on that top comparison picture.  It looks very cool! :D

Excellent DJ.

I think you are a rare one in the fact that every ship that I think you've ever released is very distinctly "Star Trek".

IMO, any of your ships (except perhaps the Libertas... which is awesome, but somewhat "out-of-box") could be considered canon and shown in an episode of TNG, DS9, or Voyager in a heart beat.

Needs more cowbell. Not really, but are the lights going to be turned on, all of the windows are dark. As for your custom tech, I have a suggestion. We already have targetable plasma streams that explode when fired upon, and this ships' ram scoops (or bussard collectors) are pretty prominent. How about a tech that "absorbs" (really just a timer) explosive/flamable material and then, after a certain percentage is filled, you can release said material (like the plasma stream) and enemies may fire on it, causing damaging explosions. The timer could go increase faster based on the type of nebula you are in (I'm assuming that you can read whether you are in a nebula or not and whether or not it damages the ship.)

Likeliest reason is because he hasnt started the illumination bit of texturing yet (alpha/glows).

As for the ship, it's looking most impressive. I'd say it's a worthy contender for the next MOTM :P

Window's look kind of small for the overall shape of the ship.  The design makes it appear to be a Medium or Heavy cruiser, but with the window's that size it looks like more like a battleship size ship to me.  It could just be me though.

I'd say the window size is okay... perhaps this ship is in the 450-600 meter range, like the Ambassador Class. And the Amby was not a Battleship.

Sovereign (Century)
Galaxy (USS Pegasus)
Akira (Raptor)
Intrepid (Vivace)

but he still needs a chance to get on with life!

McCoy--> you never know.

As to the size of the ship, this is roughly how big it is compared to a Galaxy Class.  So in terms of length, it's a pretty big ship, but as you can see the Galaxy probably has double the displacement.

Update:

Texturing is coming along.  Most of the basic hull texturing is done, its just a matter of adding little stuff all around.  The nacelles have no textures so far, as I am thinking about modifying them to make them just a touch more beefy.  Not sure yet.  Anyhow, suggestions are certainly welcome, but if you've got em, get em in because I plan to be done this before I go to bed tonight.

Hope you like it so far.  I'm gonna try and make this my best ship ever.

Hmm battlecruisers.

How about the Invincible class? After the world's first battlecruisers. Ship names could include Invincible, Indomitable, Indefatigable, Renown, Repulse, Hood, Sharnhorst, Dunkerque, Kong?, Tiger, and Kirov.

All those ships have been described as battlecruisers and cover a period from the early 20th century to the present day.

hmm, somehow i like names out of the greek mythology, and since you said this is a battlecruiser
here are my suggestions:

Ares, Ares is the Olympian god of warfare, though i think there is already a ship named that on bcfiles....

Tartaros or Tartarus, Tartaros is in the greek mythology something like the underworld

Erobus, or Erobos http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erebus

Pentheus, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pentheus or

Echion, Echion was a Argonaut, look here to adapt more http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pentheus

Nebula's suggestion of Agamemnon has given me an idea that falls in line with what many of you have suggested...

Leonidas Class.

Seriously, I watched 300 for the first time about a month ago, and it rocked.  Leonidas is the coolest warrior that possibly ever was... at least the movie version of him, which is good enough for me. :)  Thanks all for your suggestions!

Textures are about 90% done at this point.  The bottom and undercut of the secondary hull need some work yet, and I want to add more paneling details to the engines and little details to the primary hull.  One thing that's different about this ship from all my others is that virtually every edge, such as on the saucer rim and pylon edges, have paneling and not just blank texturing.  I think it's really improved the overall appearance.

I think this is as far as I'm gonna get tonight.  It's 1am and I'm tired. :)

I thought that too, but the buzzards are placed on the top of the nacelle, so I'm assuming (Canonically) she would be overly quick, and instead be more like a vacuum, sucking up passing particles... I dunno.

The tips of the nacelles have different textures, one just whitish gray, the other a darker gray.  Are they supposed to be like that?

Cookie, DJ, although I don't really like your choice for class name.

Dalek--> No time for breaks.  Gotta be back at work on Monday and I won't have time to mod until March.  :D  Besides, I want to release this ship tomorrow.

Rengers--> Thanks man.  Seeing your Acheron really got me fired up about finishing this.  Actually, this has become my favorite ship too. :)

El--> Yes they were, but that's against Roddenberry's rules, so I have changed it.  I've given the nacelle connection a "cuff".  Basically I extended and widened the connection point, and it's actually grown on me.  It looks beefy and stable.  In the ship's original configuration, I'm pretty sure the collectors did show from the front, but then I shortened the nacelle pylons and probably forgot about the front view.  Pix below.

Prime--> Have a look at the bumper sticker. :)

Farshot--> Thanks, I caught that last night after posting.  It has been changed and the nacelle tips are now identical.

Pix for you guys.

We should all be very grateful and glad that we've gotten so many incredible ships from DJ.

Whether the new Star Trek movie is going to be any good or not doesn't really matter... it's still gonna make some money and if J.J. Abrahms ever finds out who DJ is and sees any of his work... he'll scoop him up ASAP for any sequels (if there are any).

And then... DJ would probably be too busy to ever come back and make more magic for us humble folk here at BCC.

Exceptional work DJ.

3 ships? a little more, cause there are USS Raptor, USS Juno and the Galaxy Class Pack
Fine Ships, nicly done, i love them, where you will upload? if Filefront, it needs one more Day for checking, and filefront is very slowly anyway.

You know he caters to you fanboys.  I was trying to convince him to wait until Velociraptor Awareness day to release this one.   :P

Wouldn't every day be velociraptor awareness day?  After all, you don't want to be caught unawares by a pack of those vicious little critters.

You should remember that mostFilefront staff managing the sites are volunteers. But since it's weekend I'm sure someone from BC Files will post it soon. I just reinstalled BC to try these out...

Starforce is usually really quick for putting my stuff up.  He's great about that.

I'd have uploaded the files last night but it was 3am, I was really tired, and I still wanted to make some HP tweaks to the galaxy's suggested by Jimmy and Andy.
