Title: Modeling
Post by: JerichoKru on January 26, 2008, 08:02:58 AM
not sure if this is the right place but,

What kind of 3D modeling program would you recommend?

I've looked a a few...but i'd rather get an opinion from experienced modelers

Personally i prefer 3d max,
IMHO, its head above shoulders compared to lightwave. ms3d etc (which i have experimented with)
But it is quite expensive, so i would recommend Gmax, its a stripped down version of 3d max and has a nif exporter which you can get from niftools.

Actually It seems that Autodesk ''dont offer G-max as a stand-alone product'' anymore.

Another program that a lot of video game companies use is Maya.

Moved to modding as that's where more modellers hand out.

Personally if i was starting out i would seriously use the gimp as a 2d texture element and then blender for the 3d workflow, I have seen amazing work with both.. and for free there are no excuses lol  :) just learn

Actually the entire of the Star Wars Galaxies MMO has been modelled in Maya. :P It's not just for CGI.

COD2 and 4 was done with Maya as well

There you go.

I'd advice Max, G-max maybe with proper conversion tubes. Milkshape 3D can be a powerful tool if used properly but milkshape requires you to connect every single vertex manually in order to create faces (unless you cut and reform cylinders which still takes the effort of connecting some faces manually).

well piracy is if you use a keygen, luckily i happen to have a drafting teacher who already had it and had 31 keys and 30 computers

Admin Edit - Read your EULA, its more complicated then that

you can have some conversion problems with 3.1. it seems to fail sometimes.
you can go with max 7 or higher and use the converter from niftools, which is free.

Furthermore, since the first post in over 30 days in this thread contained a warez reference, and in my opinion, no worthwhile contributions since, I am locking this on the count of thread resurrection with no responses of substance.
