Title: Modeling Contest added rules
Post by: executioner_de on April 15, 2008, 12:40:59 PM
I thought about something, how about a Lightsaber modeling Contest. Its easy to moddel and everyone can do it :). From the entrys were doing a nomination poll like the modder of the month or we will let poll on every saber.

There will be 2 Polls in the End

1. Design
2. Render

Rules:

1. Just one Render
2. No post Production, the Modelers name in a Corner is allowed though.
2 Contest ends at May 4th

What deadlines are you thinking of? If it's too short I won't be able to make it as I have exams coming up but count me in it to win it.

Plus, any other rules you're thinking of?

6 weeks does me. More than enough time to get something together.

Also, are you/we judging only by modelling quality or the final product? For example. limey98 has a decent model but the render isn't doing it justice.
Title: Re: Modeling Contest
Post by: RCgothic on April 17, 2008, 08:52:25 AM
Hmm, well I could have a decent go at modelling one, but I'd be completely incapable of  applying surface effects or making nice renders of it, so that probably badly disadvantages me.

Pretty much done. Will work on perhaps texturing and perhaps putting a blade on it later. Apparently it's not possible to do a good blade entirely in Lightwave and it needs some post production to make it work.

EDIT: I'd like to note btw that this is not a blaster but a sawed off shotgun, under the logic that... how does a lightsaber block a buckshot anyway?
Title: Re: Modeling Contest
Post by: executioner_de on April 20, 2008, 03:56:34 AM
Looking good, plz no post production and plz just post 1 render, the one you want in the contest.

I must say im impressed how lightsaber can look like :)
Title: Re: Modeling Contest added rules
Post by: Armondikov on April 20, 2008, 07:55:53 AM
Why did I know a gunblade (or should it be blastersaber?) would pop up.

Okay, one render it'll be.  :P

EDIT: For anyone who is interested, for blades, the core is white (with a very, very subtle tint due to the colour of the blade but this is only visible on the strongest colours such as deep reds and purples) with the coloured glow around it. To get this effect, the easiest way is to change the blade's luminosity (the armount that the surface is lit regarless of what light falls on it) to way above normal. At least 100% (if your program uses % scales) if not a little more. This should saturate out the colour and make the material white regardless of the material's base colour or texture. Hopefully, your glow should stay the same as the base colour (this should be the case in MAX and, apparently, newer versions of Lightwave), if not you'll need to change the glow settings or do some after effects work.

There are some more complex methods that involve volumetric rendering and some particle effects, but it's fiddly work, it's best just to work on the saber itself and leave the blade switched off.

...I claim then that all my post production is in fact, a texture, rendered on the surface of a cube facing the camera and thus, in fact, just a render.

...and my (failed) humor was that a lawyer can argue that someone can take a post produced picture, and then puts it inside the 3D rendering program on a surface, and then render the surface. You have technically used photoshop to create a texture then, and can be shown that the final image can be made within the 3d program upon clicking the button "render".

Anyways...

After you kill them with the gun, you can hack them a bit with the lightsaber and say you killed them with the lightsaber in Epic Traditional Combat, no?
Title: Re: Modeling Contest added rules
Post by: Viper on April 24, 2008, 10:36:25 AM
Precisely.  although since most of the "bad guys" I encounter at work are unarmed, I would use the lightsaber most of the time anyway.  Then I can plan some weapon on them.

Couldn't get the text function to work properly (for some reason they've changed it since the last version of LW I had) and got bored. So, I'm happy with this image and I'm submitting it as final for this competition. Although I'm likely to revisit it at a later date and post it here or at SFM.

There's been some awesome work put up so far, hope more people put their ideas forward.
