I thought about something, how about a Lightsaber modeling Contest. Its easy to moddel and everyone can do it :). From the entrys were doing a nomination poll like the modder of the month or we will let poll on every saber.
There will be 2 Polls in the End
1. Design
2. Render
Rules:
1. Just one Render
2. No post Production, the Modelers name in a Corner is allowed though.
2 Contest ends at May 4th
-
Don't count me in, but I like it.
-
I mite try to do this.
-
What deadlines are you thinking of? If it's too short I won't be able to make it as I have exams coming up but count me in it to win it.
Plus, any other rules you're thinking of?
-
Guess I'll go first. Ironic really, as I'll probably come last !

I thought I'd take the time test out my lighting and camera skills. Shocking, aren't they :P!
-
It does sound interesting. Too bad I don't have the time for it.
-
You kids go play. I just like to watch talented people do what they do.
-
-
-
how about 6 weeks after this post.
-
whats the prize? :P
-
Prestige :P

that looks like it's more likely to pleasure a woman than cut them in half...
-
6 weeks does me. More than enough time to get something together.
Also, are you/we judging only by modelling quality or the final product? For example. limey98 has a decent model but the render isn't doing it justice.
-
Hmm, well I could have a decent go at modelling one, but I'd be completely incapable of applying surface effects or making nice renders of it, so that probably badly disadvantages me.
-
Yeah, my rendering sucks and i gave up half way through trying to make a nice chrome effect!
-
how about one for design and one for a render?
-

-
In which case can I resubmit mine at a later point? I assumed it was based on build quality and design.
-
actually i just want 1 design aka render per person. the already posted have a 2nd chance for an entry :)
-
Prestige :P
+ a cookie from everyone participating in the thread?
-
Hey thats a good Idea 8)

Yes but:
Does it feature multitouch control where "you put both hands on the handle and rotate"?
-
No, but it does emit a sudden shower of fluid, and causes Yoda to give birth to a Youngling.....
-
OOOKKKAAAYYYYYYY, that's TOTALLY enough out of both of you! don't MAKE me ground you and sent you to your rooms with no dinner! :P
-
Dont threaten The Weasel,
Because The Weasel just might Disembowel you.
-
Had one payed attention, one would know it was intended as humor. :P
*runs away before the weasel disembowels anyway*
-
Ok ok, enough back on topic Plz
-
Can't take you kids anywhere.....
-
yes, as exe said,
Ill give it a shot, even though im not a SW fan ill see what i can come up with,
Diversity is good for tweaking your skills 8), Plus, its a nice change to model something apart from Trek,
-
My REAL entry. A million thanks to Lint for teaching me how to add glows and giving tips for the rendering.

-
Actually, it looks like this one ;)

-
That is one of the pics I took inspiration from. I did a little surfing and found a few cool looking ones.
-
I sent a preview of mine to a friend and got this response:
it looks like a samuri sheath, and a light saber got together, but then the ipod came in to change the sheets, and then bow-chicka-wow-wow
Make of that what you will...
-
I'll have a go if I get a chance.
-
Pretty much done. Will work on perhaps texturing and perhaps putting a blade on it later. Apparently it's not possible to do a good blade entirely in Lightwave and it needs some post production to make it work.

'

EDIT: I'd like to note btw that this is not a blaster but a sawed off shotgun, under the logic that... how does a lightsaber block a buckshot anyway?
-
Looking good, plz no post production and plz just post 1 render, the one you want in the contest.
I must say im impressed how lightsaber can look like :)
-
Why did I know a gunblade (or should it be blastersaber?) would pop up.
Okay, one render it'll be. :P
EDIT: For anyone who is interested, for blades, the core is white (with a very, very subtle tint due to the colour of the blade but this is only visible on the strongest colours such as deep reds and purples) with the coloured glow around it. To get this effect, the easiest way is to change the blade's luminosity (the armount that the surface is lit regarless of what light falls on it) to way above normal. At least 100% (if your program uses % scales) if not a little more. This should saturate out the colour and make the material white regardless of the material's base colour or texture. Hopefully, your glow should stay the same as the base colour (this should be the case in MAX and, apparently, newer versions of Lightwave), if not you'll need to change the glow settings or do some after effects work.
There are some more complex methods that involve volumetric rendering and some particle effects, but it's fiddly work, it's best just to work on the saber itself and leave the blade switched off.
-
Is texturing allowed?
-
I just added a lens glow on mine!
-
Sure, texturing is allowed :)
Plz this is not a WIP Threat, just post youre contest render and dont change the render after youve posted it.
-
no post production
Sure, texturing is allowed
...I claim then that all my post production is in fact, a texture, rendered on the surface of a cube facing the camera and thus, in fact, just a render.
*ducks*
-
By post production, I think he means photoshopping the render.

Yes
-
...and my (failed) humor was that a lawyer can argue that someone can take a post produced picture, and then puts it inside the 3D rendering program on a surface, and then render the surface. You have technically used photoshop to create a texture then, and can be shown that the final image can be made within the 3d program upon clicking the button "render".
Anyways...
-
stay tuned for my entry, folks :)
-
And my Classic Style Lightsaber on a Classic base ^^

Because you're being... there's a word for it, but I can't recall it...
-
And now, for my entry. Lo and behold ye heathen Jedi ;)
-
Great design  Looks like its a Sith Lord one.
My Saber will cut it in 2 halfs anyways ^^
-
since when can lightsabers pierce vonduun crab armor? ;)
looking forward to your final, exe :)
-
I'd like to raise the ethical considerations of killing crabs for their armor. :arms:
-
Question noted, questioner disposed of. That's doin' it Vong-style, baby :)
-
oh, cool blaster saber. Nice with blade, blaxxer. Very original design for star wars. :)
-
So if a Saber can't cut it, how did you cut it up to make it in the first place :?
-
It's called 'shaping' ;)

My entry

Thanks to:
LC for his Vray help
blaXXer for letting me spam him with renders and for the 2d work
Armondikov for pointing out some ... edges...
-
Great work, EXE :) Especially all those raytraced sections :)
-
oooo, perdy. thats what I need to carry at work. It'd fit great on the duty belt. Handcuffs, mace, lightsaber, radio, gun.
-
A Jedi...with a GUN?
-
A Jedi...with a GUN?
I have never claimed to be a jedi....In fact, I believe my title over at BCU was Darth Viperus.
-
After you kill them with the gun, you can hack them a bit with the lightsaber and say you killed them with the lightsaber in Epic Traditional Combat, no?
-
Precisely. although since most of the "bad guys" I encounter at work are unarmed, I would use the lightsaber most of the time anyway. Then I can plan some weapon on them.
-
Yeah, I see, the Darth title was justified after all ;)
-
Very. I have developed a notorious reputation at work for being ruthless and "hunting" for homeless.
-
Nice work, Exe.
-
Armondikov for pointing out some ... edges...
And it looks much better for it too, though I still prefered the wood texture on the base.
-
here's my entry

-
Cool stuff, and i thought mine is a classic design, you toped me in classicness. hehe
-
I'm going to do a plaque using my Star Wars Name, as generated here: http://parris.josh.com.au/humour/StarWarsName.shtml
Try it, it seems fairly accurate :P
-
Couldn't get the text function to work properly (for some reason they've changed it since the last version of LW I had) and got bored. So, I'm happy with this image and I'm submitting it as final for this competition. Although I'm likely to revisit it at a later date and post it here or at SFM.
There's been some awesome work put up so far, hope more people put their ideas forward.
-
Beautifully crafted, dude! :D Definitely my favorite.
-
Tomorrow is the last submission day guys
-
Ohh, that came up faster than I originally thought.
-
Great work, Armonds! :)
-
Ok thats it :) thx for the interest in this lil contest.
