Title: first ship project
Post by: baz1701 on July 02, 2008, 07:56:49 AM
I've done a couple of interiors now and I'm thinking of doing my first ship.

I designed a ship back in 1994 called USS Nastromo NCC-1695 Phoenix class.

She is a 23rd centry movie era starship, that packs alot of firepower.

Her backstory is by the time of TWOK she was a 60 year old towing vessel SS Nastromo (same type of ship her namesake was in Alien) but she was being used by smugglers who crossed the Romulain and Klingon Neutral Zones often. Star Fleet captured and confiscated the Nastromo and re-fitted her to be a Federation covert ship. Though her exterior looked like she was ready for the scarp yard her warp drive was state of the art and she had her main internal cargo hold converted in to two concelled Photon pods that when deployed could fire over 500 pho-torps in under a minute.

For over a year she operated undercover performing missings behind eniemy lines. On her last covert mission she was un-covered by the Romulains, but she still managed to escape.

With her cover blown Star Fleet decided not to retire the aged Starship but again refitted her to the lastest Starfleet specs and re-regestered her USS Nastromo NCC-1695, and named her class Phoenix due to her resurrection.

Nastromo became a real asset to the 7th fleet over the years and Star Fleet even commisoned a brand new Phoenix Class ship the USS Indianapolis.

Nastromo has been wrecked several times in battle but never damaged beyond repair so her appearence has changed always being upgraded keeping her a front runner of the fleet.

If you guys like the sound of her backstory and would like to play her in BC I'd be happy make a model pack of her in her differnet states?

Use more segments on the saucer edge (say 52 for example) and go down from there on surfaces that are under the same smoothing group. Also, watch the smoothing. Try to rebuild the nacelles using a chamferbox or a capsule (I used a capsule on the Joshua and Novi Sad classes I did seems to be the closest shape to the Excel/Ent-B style nacelles) as a basis. Also, I'd start out the bottom part of the sec hull from a capsule (it's closer to your original drawing from what you have now, and it does look good).

Thanks for the advice, to be honest I'm sure the ship I start will have none of the components of the final ship incorperated.

So far it's a neat little ship. I can't wait to see what she looks like. She actually looks like the test bed for TMP Engines lol. If you don't have an idea for a story, that ship could be for testing TMP Weapons or even a tug :P Either way I like it.

ignore the first version of the the ship, I'm not working on it anymore. though they are both the same ship as you can seeing in the re-fit history I posted above.

I like that your sticking to ur sketches well, I also agree with adonis with chucking in more polies, mabey some chamferring and mesh detail added.

Its a good start Baz, and i look forward to seeing where you go with this ;)

@Kirk, imagine though, most out of place things in the Star Trek world are believable, look at the Aurora shuttle.

I think it only looks odd because you have made the impulse engines really detailed and the rest of the ship look quite plain in comparrison..  i think once you have added some features to the ship itself it will look cool.

the next stage is the saucer version.

Below is my concept for the orignal hull to become the secondary hull.

the top shape is the hull as is, and below side, top and profile of my new concept secondary hull
