Its just a simple bridge module for now. Im not even sure what this era this is gonna be for...

If you play EAW:FOC then you know where the inspiration for the name came from. :)
-
lol, Tyber Zann. Good Start.  :D

Whats that dark ring on the top?

I have no idea but it shows up either as a wireframe or a dark ring on textured, shaded and solid modes when I set it to smooth aswell as in textured mode when I set it to solid.

Oh duh that makes sense now lol. Had a feeling that was it. Everythings fine now, thanks.

Now I just need to figure out what the rest of this thing is gonna look like...
-
Nice, looks like it could be the bridge module of a TOS Vessel.

-
perhaps something older, like around the time of the burke and TAS bonaventure, they had more pronounced bridge domes. Or it just could be something from rosewell...

Yeah, I think thats the direction im gonna head towards. Would two cylinders with a height of 0.001 to make the top and bottom of the saucer sound about right to you guys? Or what?
-
It's just about irrelevant what WE think. I say, go at it, long and hard, and see what comes of it. The most important perspective is your own. That's it. I can't stress that enough. :]

-
Ok so that idea didn't work. So, I used the same method I used to create the bridge to do the top of the saucer.

 EDIT:Last pics for the night.

This ship will also be finding its way into Armada and Legacy aswell so it can't be to heavy on the polys for Armada but will hopefully look decent enough for BC and Legacy.
-
nice progress for an early attempt. its a shame that i lack the...3-dimensional mind for modeling.

-
				What I've done today:
 added turbolift behind bridge
 added impulse assembly
added that thing to which I don't know the name of lol on the dorsal aft of the saucer(when you enlarge the second pic in this post you'll know what I mean)
 removed doubles from everything

What I will be doing tonite:
fixing the top and bottom edge of the saucer

For the most part i've got a finished product in my head...just got to get there. For instance the neck will have a pair of photon tubes but will be stacked instead of side by side and the pylons will start under the impulse deck and extend out and downward and ressembly the wings of like a 747 or a C-17 with the stabilizer fins(why not? lol :arms:). Therefore the naccels will be mounted on the bottom of the pylons. The engineering section will basically be the connie's top half and then be doubled and flipped upside down(did that make any since?).
-
well my immediate suggestion is to increase the scale of your turbolift shaft attached to the bridge. its current size makes that bridge module seem very large for that era. other than that, will be glad to see more

-
Is this your first Blender model? Independent from that it looks good, even though I need to get used to the design

Yeah, I noticed thats one of the few minor adjustments I will be making tonite before getting to the neck.

Yes this is my first real model post the various tutorials.

Soon I will post a few drawings of what th final design should look like.
-
Well, Here are some perspective shots of what it looks like now(not even 2k polies yet I just noticed).

-
Nice start. Of your modeling abilities, I am JEALOUS!

O' gods, hath consumed Red Alert chilly, haven't ye? :P

 Good start.
-
Here is the neck. Im debating wether its going to have three tubes fore and aft or two...

And yes I know its all about what I think since im the one doing this but still I need your input on this matter.

About 24 hours from now you will have pics of the "wings".

 Good start.

spicey food = not good for the stomache
-
Alright, here are the warp struts. Im still deciding on the exact placement of the naccels but they will be mounted underneath for certain.

-
Didn't have room for the orthographic shots so here they are.

-
Looking very nice, I especially liked the last of the perspective shots. Cookie for you.

-
				Thanks.

I will be posting pics with the engineering section tomorrow.

EDIT: When I set the model to smooth I noticed a few problems around the saucer rim. How do I fix these?
-
				Thanks.

EDIT: When I set the model to smooth I noticed a few problems around the saucer rim. How do I fix these?

By doing the smoothing manually. Never use automatic smooth.
-
yep, Adonis is totally right.  Select the polys you want to smooth together, and then smooth them independent from all the others.

-
Let me elaborate on those rather vague answers.

For the saucer, your going to need many smoothing groups. If you assign one to the top (but not the bridge module), one to the rim, and one to the bottom (excluding the decorative stuff at the very bottom). Beyond that, its really trial and error to get things right. There is other aspects to smoothing, but I don't know them!
-
Well, hopefully this will be enough.--->http://ruzzy2006.deviantart.com/art/Blender-Smoothing-groups-tut-46039478

-
The engineering hull is done. I also moved the warp pylons up a fair bit.

-
Here are some updated perspective shots aswell.

-
Look at the TOS Connie's deflector to see how to reshape it.

-
				very different mate, good job

-
				Nifty!

 why reshape it?
it looks cool the way it is.
maybe a bit strange but hey ;)

More like odd in a bad kind of funny way.
-
I will think about the option.

-
Ok, on to the next issue, nacelle size and location. I had originally decided to have the nacelles mounted underneath the pylons but, idk it might look better mounted to the side of the pylons(well, some people might).

Until how I figure out how to change a poll you're just stuck by telling me whats better(and more proportionate) for the moment.
-
I think size 1 mounted on the end of the pylons looks best.

Also, I personally think the deflector looks cool as it is.
-
Make a model with size two also, two different versions wouldn't be a bad thing :D

-
Ok, i've decided. Im going to do one version with the nacelles size half way between what I have above. The first will be the original mounted underneath version and then a varient with them mounted on the sides. Looking at the pics above and various connie pics the first size is too small and the second size is too big. So, expect atleast two updates during the week(main parts of the nacelles then all the little bits and pieces).

-
Im thinking this ship will be 300m in length.

Here some early shots of the nacelles. I will be done with the rest of the nacelle details thursday and will post the finished models shots friday.
-
Well, here are all the other details for the nacelles. I have two files now one for the standard and one for the varient(havn't merged the nacelles with either model yet). I also added the phaser balls on top of each of the shuttlebays. All I have left is to get back to those smoothing errors then I will get going with whatevers next. I will post all the ortho and perspective shots for both versions soon.

-
Ok, here she is(in her current form anyways). What do you all think?

 BTW watch the potd.;)

 Consortium class(standard) orthographics:
-
				Consortium class(varient) orthographics:

Will post the perspective shots for both when I can get them.
-
NOW the model is done. lol

The deflector is smaller and flatter and the saucer is wider.
-
				And the varient.

-
Those nacelle pylons look they are about to snap.

-
				Its space...it doesn't matter...

-
Consider aesthetics too, as well as battle situations. One phaser blast will take out the pylon.

-
The end of the pylons are actually thicker than the original connies though. I want to keep the airplane wing shape as close to real life as possible.

 EDIT: Better?
-
				Yes, that looks sturdier.

-
				Anything else anyone?

Come monday I move on with these ships and get them started per which game they will be going into(oldest first so, A1, A2, BC and then Legacy).
-
Alright I need a volunteer. A model proof reader(I guess that would be the term) to see any errors with the mesh that my untrained eyes can't see. Having another set of eyes pour over a model before its finished is always a good thing. Obviously it would have to be someone with a few years under their belt. Please?

 I'd appreciate it, thanks.
-
I would look at her for u assuming i could load it into max.

Thanks for the help. I will export them into 3ds format and send them your way.

-
I just sent it to your btinternet.com address in your profile.

-
Lol, i havent been to that one in a while...  ok np. Im sure i'll find it imbetween the thousands of spam.  :)

-
Oh no, thats not good lol. Oh well. heh

-
Everytime i import those 2 3ds files mate, their blank.

-
Ok, thats just wired they were over a hundred kb in size each before I put them in the zip...and when I just took them out the zip they were 22 bytes each..........................what?

 Second attempt coming up.

EDIT: They are 137kb each while they are 500kb each in the default .blend format.

 EDIT2: E-mail sent.

Im thinking that I didn't have the models actually selected when I exported them...and now I know.
-
NO prob, i will check it out mate.

-
Ok, so heres the deal. I've given up on the whole poly reducing thing and have decided to rebuild it from scratch. I will start with the Armada1/2 models and once thats been submitted to filefront I will start on the BC/Legacy models. So, the next post in this thread might be another few months from now...maybe, depends if I just upload the models themself or have several people do what I can't.

Just thought I'd let you all know that this isn't dead.

-
i'll go ahead and lock the thread for now...

send me a PM whenever youd like it reopened :)
-
Alright, I've finished the entire saucer section of the ship at 1182 polies. I made some improvments from the original mostly the bridge module and sensor dome. Much better so far don't you agree?

Here's the pics of it so far. http://forums.filefront.com/group.ph...res&groupid=23
-
something seems wrong with the link - clicking on it says "page not found"...

you may want to upload the pics here instead :)
-
I thought you could view the groups pictures section as a guest. So, here's the link to the album then. http://forums.filefront.com/album.php?albumid=75 The first nine pics are the ones you want.

-
				Excellent work so far :)

-
				Thank you.

So, the pylon and neck structures are done. Didn't do anything different really other than creating the torpedo launcher part of the neck in a much smarter and a much less poly using way. Just click on the link of my above post to see the new pics.

Oh, and if anyone wants any specific pics(wireframe/closeups and such) just tell me what you want a look at.

-
Yeeeeeaaaaahhhhh, im on the fence about finishing this now(and everything else I was going do). This whole situation has really killed my motivation. Maybe in a months time or two when everything has settled down and the new homes for everything is known I might just keep going on this.

-
Giggity giggity goo, i've got an update for you. Good god the engineering section is so much better this time around. Its a lot cleaner and wastes a whole lot fewer polies than the first time around, wow. Though looking back I think I would have been better off doing all the round bits using 72 or 96 steps or whatever instead of 48 since its only 2893 polies right now(maybe I will if I do a refit version). Click the link in post three posts above this one(March 19) to see the new images.

-
Alright guys, I think im done! I am soo pleased at the way this has turned out considering my not so great skill level. It sits at 6155 polies. I have also added all of the phasers as well and as you can see I went with a jjprise approach minus the two phaser half-spheres around the shuttle bays which are ofcourse from the TOS connie. This ship will have 13 phasers(3 on dorsal saucer, 3 on ventral saucer, 1 on top of the pylon/neck section, 4 on belly and 1 for each shuttle bay) and 6 torpedo tubes(3 fore and 3 aft). The look and sounds of the weapons will be(well would like for them to be anyways) a cross between tos, tmp and jjverse. More specifically, tmp era pulse phasers but blue and maybe something like the blue torp from the motion picture. The paint job will mostly be tos with a little tmp/jjverse. Obviously for me anyways most of the work is done already since I can only use Blender and Im not sure yet if I can texture with paint.net yet, but if I can I will do a very basic version and have whoever take it from there. Here is a link to the most recent pics. The first nine are of the BC version. http://forums.filefront.com/members/...ium-class.html

-
				Link doesn't work.

-
FF is still messing up. Downloading from places like BCF is fine though.

-
				Yeah, everything is fine now.

-
So, I originally started out only with the one version(nacelles underneath pylons), then I decided to do a second(nacelles on side of pylons) and now i've got a third(nacelles on top of pylons). All the images are below and the completed model pics start in the middle of the second page so make your way up and then start from the bottom of page 1 all the way to the top. The last ten pics are closeups on the smaller details that are hard to make out of the other pics.

 http://forums.filefront.com/members/139190-086goinfast-albums-consortium-class-varient-bridge-commander-legacy-version-page2.html

If anyone wants to take a stab at texturing them please let me know and I will send them to you in either 3ds/obj/nif format...whichever you want. Otherwise I will send the models into filefront as is next week and see if hopefully someone will finish them. Texturing wont take as long as you might think since the only difference as you can see above is the position of the nacelles. So once the first ship is textured just copy and paste over to the other two which will greatly reduce the number of texture files and save on file size. Though texture wise these ships arn't going to be completely TOS style as i've said in my above post(late TOS). Once someone does pick these models up just let me know before you start doing textures on them as I have some ideas on some parts and I will post some pics with what I have in mind. Though with the size of the texture files themselves, thats all up to whoever is doing them(will give my opinion if asked though ofcourse). Also if the person that is doing the textures also takes up doing the scripts and everything else to get it ingame, let me know before you get to that as i've got it somewhat planned out as far as thats concerned as well(mostly with weapons though).

I would really appreciate it, thanks.
