Title: Absolutely horrid framerate
Post by: Mackie on February 08, 2009, 01:17:45 PM
Hi, I decided to try BC again after god knows long its been... but I have a problem. Right now I havent got a single mod installed, only the game itself and the patch. Framerate seem to be what it should in the menus but whenever something else goes on on the screen like if i pan across the bridge the frame rate goes to around what seems like 15 which to me is quite unbearable ;/

and shortly of my computer according to dxdiag / me..
Operating System: Windows XP Professional (5.1, Build 2600) Service Pack 3 (2600.xpsp_sp3_gdr.080814-1236)
   Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU     E6750  @ 3.20GHz (2 CPUs)
   Memory: 2046MB RAM
   DirectX Version: DirectX 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904)
Card name: ATI Radeon HD 3870

any ideas, anyone?

Have you tried playing with the Graphics settings? For example, the Graphics adapter (there are only 2! Just a duplicate of each)?

turn off T&L

turn off T&L
Which is part of the Graphics Adapter options. Also, you will have to set this each time you start BC, as it will forget it (even if you edit your options.cfg).

Yeah hi to everyone too :D
I tried playing around with the settings, even T&L, nothing seems to affect the framerate :(

Have you tried installing the Foundation, and then my FPS Counter, just to get a real measurement? Maybe it only feels* slow while infact it isn't.

*Disclamer: Yes, feeling slow is the worst problem.

well no not yet, and I know it feels slow because it is slow. I dont need an fps counter to tell me that the fps is very, very bad :/
eyeball mk1 of pretty much anyone can tell when its around 15, or just less than 20.

You would be suprised, I was sure of myself as well, until recently, I was programming a small utility and it was incredibly slow, took half an hour, I optimized the hell out of it and it worked in 10 minutes, still incredibly slow, until I saw it was processing 3 GB of data... :/

Of course, that's not the case here.

Then I would suggest going straight to Bridge Commander Universal Tool.

Have you tried playing with the Graphics settings?

Whats the bridge commander universal tool :p
http://bridgecommander.filefront.com/file/Bridge_Commander_Universal_Tool_aka_BCSMC;97168
it is a program that pretty much replaces BCMP and BCMI...  those two programs are a bit outdated and a little buggy...
BCUT does everything those two programs would do, plus contains alot more very useful functions...

you could if you wanted to; no need for BCMP or BCMI anymore really if you use BCUT...

It wont, it's for installing the mods that will help though.

While mods won't generally help with performance (not with the problem areas you described), with some games it has helped, prime example, Klingon Academy, which ran smoother the higher you pushed it.

Playing with the graphics option didn't help then?

strange enough i managed to fix the problem partly by accident. maxed out all the settings in my ati catalyst control panel, AA / adaptive AA / Anisotropic filtering to play some other old games and forgot the settings on and started BC and voila, it worked beautifully. Turned out that turning on anisotropic filtering fixes the problem for some reason o_O
fuck me if i ever knew what the problem was but hey it works, and thats all what matters to me!
