Title: Kirk's G-A Thread
Post by: Kirk on June 16, 2009, 06:56:14 PM
Basically, I'm just fooling around with all of the free use models we have available to us on BCF. I would like to eventually convert some of my work into BC (or possibly Legacy,) but for now, only pretty pictures.

First off we have Anduril's Asia class. I've only just begun work on her. There have been quite a few lightmap tweaks, and I plan on doing a lot more to her. Right now I've made up a rough bussard transition from ENT to TOS, but I am very unsatisfied with the results.

Pics removed: Please see latest post.

Last Update before bed. All dorsal blinkers are modeled in and animated (video later this week.) Most registry lights are in. I think I may rebuild parts of her as she's looking a bit dated. C&c welcome, as always.

Well, I decided to try my hand at modeling today. The Galaxy's warp core seemed simple enough, so I thought I'd give it a whirl.

Edit: Some more work before bed.

I like the warp cores. Reminds me of the TNG Galaxy Class warp core. The connies are awesome too. You see the plasma inside the warp nacelles from the little window ports at the tops. Great tweek.

It just one core, it's a wip. :P The reason it reminds you of the galaxy core is because it is. Here's one last update.

Photo update with a video showing how the animated light rigging works on the way.
EDIT: Here's the video. Sorry it's kind of dark. :?

I really hate to triple post in my own thread, but it seems that no one has anything to say, but me. :(
Here's an HD render of my core in action. It is a .mov so you will need quicktime installed. You will get a better feel for the animation if you set quicktime to loop the video. Enjoy. (c&c always appreciated, even if you are just knocking my work.)

Is this the thing that took you 2 days to render? Wow....

Anyway, very pwetty. Anything else next on your list?

Yup, this took about a day and a half to render. My eventual plan is to build all of engineering.

Predicted render time...5 weeks? :P

Well if Krik is smarter next time and only renders frames he actually needs, it'll go a lot quicker :P

Or, less stubborn, so when I point out that if he cancels it half way through and restarts it properly, it'll still be done in half the time, he actually listens and does it :P

Well, with my discovery of finalRender, I've started a side project, remastering the BC Intro. Here's the first few seconds that I have started. The audio/video is slightly out of sych, but this will be fixed later down the road. Enjoy for now!

the only thing I'd say on the remaster, here, is increase the flicker rate.  mabey have the bussard do a "brownout"
Title: Re: Kirk's G-A Thread (BC Intro Update 8-22)
Post by: Dalek on August 23, 2009, 04:44:48 PM
The bussard shouldn't "brownout". It didnt get damaged.

The starboard bussard is at a lower power level than the port, it just isn't all that noticeable. I will see about increasing the flicker, but it seems to me that by this point, it's pretty much down for the count.

I seen it when I first viewed it.  Just out of curiosity, are you gonna remake the entire video?  Or just the repair scene?

Having a Terra-forming station over a planet doesn't mean the planet has to be barren... it could be in any stage of the planet transition/forming process.

>_>

I would be showing off the latest version of the first part, with Jb's awesome new planet texture about now, but the render (though been going for over 7 hours now) isn't even half way through! I'm off down south today to see MUSE (:arms:) and will be out til Saturday, so I guess I'll have to leave it on to finish rendering. I might set the next scene off to render concurently. They'll take longer, but its hardly gonna be quick as it is!

I think the Sovie drydock looks fine. Particularly since the Sovie is just as curvy as the Galaxy.

I think either dock would work, considering the time period for the game.

About the intro scene, the ship seems to have too much of a list.  Personally, I like the camera angles on the original intro scene much better (except for the fact that the ship turned almost 180 degrees).  I just like the way the camera moves up while the ship moves across the screen.

Ok, I've modified it so the camera rises up and tilts down a little. To be honest, I ignored most of the camera move of the original cos I thought it was clunky and unrealistic, but I think this should work better. I've animated the size of the glow on the nacelles to be smaller when theyre further away. I'll render out a lower quality version tonight to check its all ok before committing to 20 hours of rendering.

I have actually been looking at rigging a head, but whether I actually do redo the interiors shots or not, I don't know. At the worst, I would just stick with the current interior shots rather than replacing them with exteriors.

Much better!!!  I'd give you an enthusiastic thumbs up, or a dancing smiley face, but I can't.  :(

Looking at it again, the only improvement I can see would be to slow down the camera rotation a bit.  I started getting a little dizzy the second time I watched it.

Really? Me and Dalek think its worse :P Because theres nothing to compare the Dauntless to, it looks like its moving down rather than the camera moving up. I'll wait for some more opinions before rendering it out properly.
As for the speed of rotation, it's not really something that can change. It needs to pick the Dauntless up and move with it.

I dunno, I think what you had before looked better.

One thing you could do in the intro that would make nitpickers like me very happy, is set the planet models to not cast shadows on the ship.

I know it happens in the original intro, but that's just as much a gaff as the lower saucer bumps being applied to the upper saucer.

The shadow of a planet at that distance is simply nowhere near defined enough to pass over a ship like that. Things like that, and one of the shots of all the basestars over Caprica in The Plan (some of the basestars are partially behind the limb of the planet), really bug me. It's lack of respect for the true scale of planets.

Anyway, that's my little bit of OCD input. VERY nice work on everything else, though.

Of course it would! The edge may be a little fuzzier than I made there due to clouds and things, but you can't get around that fact that when you're on the opposite side of a planet to the Sun, it's dark, and when you're on the same side, it's light! That transistion has to take place somewhere.

It wasn't, Brex's connie was just the first one I came across that I already had fully prepared for use in Max.

The animation is well built, but make the animation with starfields from the video post :P Then it would be awesome  and for the warp flash, you can make lens flare glow for the naccels, 20% self-illumination, about 75% glow intensity and about 4-4.5 size, for normal. When charging warp engines, enlarge the self-iilumination to 100% and after that cut down to 20% and warping, then it would be like real warping, but thats if you want in the animation for the ship to go to warp :P

They are I think. Based on the way the stars didnt budge an inch when the camera was moving. :P

And what warp flash?

This was showing off the modifications I've made to DJ's original model, nothing more. Had I wanted a real starfield or warp effects, they would have been there. I appreciate the suggestions though.

For a warp flash I use an omni with proper lens effect settings and its looking well. Everyone can try :P ;)

What I find happens a lot in warp sequences is that the ship stretches. Thats what I always did when I still had Max; I stretched the ship and then moved it so far away the viewport couldn't pick it up.

here's a video I did that has a stretch warp effect, it's about 1:18 to 1:20 in.
http://www.trek-tube.com/play.php?vid=277 (http://www.trek-tube.com/play.php?vid=277)
I'm sure Dalek will recognize it.

What I ended up doing for the effect was slowly increasing the y-axis scale, then cutting with a fade and snapping it back in half as many frames, while the ship also moves away from the camera.  then the warpflash is a separate shot I composited in with a quick fade when the ship got to it's farthest point.  I couldn't figure out how to do the initial power up glow with the tools I had.

Of course on TNG it was completely done with an optical illusion. they started with the 6 ft model than switched to a 2 ft model to give the illusion it suddenly jumped farther from the camera.

Are you using Max?  The "stretch" for warp effect is simple: just animate a non-uniform scale into the movement of the ships.

The way I got the video below (I kept it slow so you could see easily) is I simply placed a plane behind the very end of the nacelle and then animated at each frame from 1-10, 1-5 being the stretch out and 6-10 being the stretch back to normal.  At each frame, I would go to the top view and zoom in on the spot where the nacelle should touch the plane I made.  Then scale up until the nacelle edge is touching it again and move to the next frame.  Repeat.  You can do this for every frame, every other frame or every 10 frames: the principle is the same.  The animation for the scale back to normal is the exact reverse of the scale-up.  Just copy and paste numbers from the earlier keyframes in reverse order.  Make sure you remove the plane after you're done with it!

Now it's your turn to teach me something: how do you get those flashes?

Well, if they're not working inside the actual ship then having the windows on would be silly.

Also this isn't a BC shot :P

I know, but DJ made the ship so that it would work in BC and BC can't illuminate windows from the inside. The active windows have to be textured so that they appear online before the alpha can be added.
