Just a thought that popped into my mind. What does everyone here use as their primary 3D modeling/rendering software? Also, feel free to list what you feel are pro's and con's of the program.
-
I'd wager Max as it's a current industry standard (With Maya now quickly creeping up to challenge for that). Personally don't know the pros and cons of it as I'm stuck with Lightwave, but I've been using that proggie for so long I'm just too comfortable to the layout to change.

what is "poular"?
lol j/k sorry, i had to...
yay Nebular Skool Of Sp3lling!
they teached me good!
:P

oh for the **** of *****

Way to NOT vote.

QFT.
Anyway, I use 3DS Max for anything BC-related. But I'm far more adept at using the CAD software Pro/E (I spend almost all day using the thing for work).

Actually, I voted for Max, because of the post I gave, and if I could set Max up to feel like Lightwaves UI I'd use that instead. At least until I start using Maya.

max.
Is shmexy. Am uses this "max" we speaks of. :3

Yarp. :)

most definately max. took me awhile to get the basic down, but damn it was well worth it.
(plus textbooks were a BIIG help) :dance

I completely agree on both... it's taken me a while as well but Max has so far been the best modeling application I've used, be it for the Mithra, Station or other cgi-level projects I've been farting around with. [and yes, I'll be getting back to the mithra again soon... I hope.... >_>;

*snicker*
Anyways, I use DAZ|Studio. I haven't in a long time (about four months), but you can make some pretty awesome sh!t with it. I'm still an amatuer user, but here's a couple of creations of mine...
It's got pretty good lighting effects. Once you figure out positioning (I use the "Three-Point" method) the effects of the skin and specs just really pop.
-
i'm gonna move this over to Graphic Arts, it might do better there...
-
Max...but mainly because it's what everyone else uses :P. I still need to learn more about modeling though :)
-
I prefer Poser, it's pretty cool, for those who don't know it works alot like DAZ studio (except it's not free) you can do some pretty cool stuff with it though. it does get a bit expensive, the software itself runs about $200 for the latest version and most 3rd party figures and costumes run anywhere from $10-$20. It is cross compatible with DAZ Studio stuff though, and it's fairly easy to make props for it in Milkshape. I often import BC ships into it for space scenes too.
-
I use Blender, because its free and im poor!
-
Would be blender, but as I can't get it to run any more without crashing instantly I can't do anything! *smacks head on desk repeatedly*

Well, you'd be surprised what you can get for very little cash if you go for student copies of these programs. Last I checked, Studica was selling Lightwave 9.6 for about ?100 or so, now, LW is the cheaper end of of the graphics market but it's still used professionally, is entirely self-contained and with the 9.x cycle they've sort of been taking it seriously - cloth dynamics, fiber dynamics, efficient lighting, all self-contained rather than in third party plug-ins. All that for ?100 or so, not bad. Downside is that you need to be a student (or faculty member of a registered institution).
But I was reading somewhere that "student" prices don't necessarily apply just to students, you can get these things cheap providing that you just don't use them commercially, like with a released film. I can't remember where you can get these from if you're not a student, however, but I think it's definitely possible.

All cool kids pay $3500 for 3ds max, like the 24 BCC members that use it, clearly, totally, sure thing, absolutely, no question, did.

3500? i got my copy of max9 for $800 through ITT tech and my student loans...... all 12,000 of it...
-
Exactly, the full price is really for people who will use it professionally, it's mostly for licensing purposes when it gets used in commercial applications rather than just for the software.
-
well im an SFC modder, well just starting out there, but im a gmax man, I feel so alone in that I use it to
-
I used to use Gmax, then got a copy of 3ds max 4.1 but I never paid for the autodesk subscription fee so Im stuck with this version for now, and forever as I wont be paying 2500 :roll although I do use other modelling software for rendering and mapping etc.. :)

I dabbled in Gmax before I got 3DS Max.
