Title: METAL GEAR REX
Post by: CyAn1d3 on August 18, 2009, 08:39:13 PM
over the last few days ive been scanning the internet RELENTLESSLY to find a model of my all time favorite mech... metal gear rex.... however this search returned no results other than a model that was for 50$ a friggin download (that is not authorized my kojima productions btw)..... screw that....

so i thought to my self.... im a modeler...i know what the hell im doing in max.... THE HELL WITH IT, ILL MAKE MY OWN DAMN MODEL....

heh heh so i did.. and im gonna be arrogant and say its A HELL OF ALOT BETTER LOOKING than the one id have to friggin pay for...but not the in game one from MGS4... i cant touch that quality... maybe
:D

im basing this model of the ORIGINAL design sketches from MGS1.
the model is HIGHLY, HIGHLY, HIGHLY detailed.

this here is 17 hours of work... and the model is ALMOST done... :D
(minus the rest of the legs, "filler" peices some smooting, detailing, textures, and the inevitable rigging)

so all i ask is... whos gonna help me make this bad boy walk when im done?

try a basic challenge, and do the Shagohod :P

even though MGS3 was my favorite out of the series (ending still brings a tear to me eye, has the BEST soundtrack aside to final fantasy12, and i have yet to play the 4th one or P.O.), i didnt like the shagohod all that much. it was alright considering it was a design based for the 60s,  but i wasnt really a big fan of the design, but it does confirm Gurlukovichs comment that the technology that gave birth to the metal gears was russian, and i guess that was the point.
it really wouldnt be that much of a challenge either, its very basic, i could probably have it modeled out in a day, because rex walks and has alot of moving parts, i have to make every individual part that moved independent from the main body, and thats whats taking me soo long.

MG Ray on the other hand would be a pain in the arse considering its a smooth design, but i hated Ray, and i was glad to see that Rex in a dilapidated state kicked the crap out of it, and i have yet to get a good look at the new gekkos.
(youtube is a godsend)

Pretty sweet start. I don't think you're actually far off the mark for the MGS4 version as far as modeling is concerned so far. Really, most of the impressive nature of computer game models comes from the creative use of textures -most modern graphics engines support normal maps which can work minor miracles for surprisingly little work.

I love Metal Gear Rex.  I have a paper model of it sitting on top of my desk right now!

Your modeling job looks top-notch to me!

then youuus gunna loooove the finished model.
textures are started, so now i begs the question?

anyone wanna do the rigging and the IKs for this puppy?
all attempts ive made have.... well failed..... MISERABLY.
i can get the biggest majority of the joints to function properly, however its just that damnded sliding joint on the legs.....
and the constrictions.... skeleton rigging is new territory for me im afraid :(

:D i love looking at it..
textures have started BTW, im doing it in the camo pattern thats on the papermodel.... plus maybe a woodland one for the hell of it

Reminds me more of ED-209 from the RoboCop movies, but the quality of work is great. Nice one.

Incredibly nice model dude. Can't wait to see it textured :D

And you're making an Arsenal Gear as well?
Then you gotta make the RAY (regular, production model, or both) as well, just to make a render of REX standing up against the Arsenal's RAY "bodyguards" on top of it
As hard as it can be to make RAY, I think that's a scene you would like to see even hating RAY lol

The Gekkos main body are regular metal/box shaped kinda like REX (so I guess easy to do), however their rather extensive legs are organic (so, hard to do - and seeing what they do in MGS4, especially hard to animate, more so to a guy that has problems animating REX, which is easy to animate when compared to the Gekkos lol), and overall they're much smaller too.

if i can find some reference pics for arsenal gear i would lol, but i was actually referring to my arsenal class that im almost done with.... ironically i was playing MGS2 when i came up with the arsenal class

if only you could get a screencap during the MGS3 scene in the Drunk's office.  all the models happen to be sitting on and around the guy's desk.  that'd give you a couple skin ideas...

i got the papermodels, and ive been going over the screen caps from the twin snakes, they share the same camo pattern

Metal Gear Solid the best damn game EVER put on the playstation, and one of sonys/konamis key gaming franchises.
go to WIKI and look it up, best damn story ever.. tho for some people it can be tough to follow.

I sort of know how to get the sliding joint on the leg to work. It would require manually animating how far up the slide it is, but the lower leg would always stay and rotate with the upper.

Where exactly do you mean by the sliding joints, you can do it with clever use of IK chaining and constraining the motions to particular paths.

Not having ever played MGS, I would guess its like the attached pic, which the blue being the boundary between the sliding bits and the red being the movement.

close, but not quite. luckily i made this render awhile back so it would be easier to explain how REX walks

the dots represent the joints themselves (i.e. swinging joints like your knee)
only ONE can move on all axes, but thats not relevant to the problem

the red slides parallel along the blue, thats the easiest way i can explain it
Title: Re: METAL GEAR REX
Post by: limey BSc. on September 11, 2009, 03:31:53 PM
So it's essentially a leg with 2 knees and a sliding foot?
If it's possible, do a render with all parts at the other extreme of movement to give a better idea of what happens.

basically at the full extension?
the postiton its in is a crouched postion, what you want is a pic of what the legs look like standing?

actually now that i remember it that joint only moves when res goes to take a step.... im gonna scan youtube real quick to find a good video that represents this.
Title: Re: METAL GEAR REX
Post by: CyAn1d3 on September 11, 2009, 04:31:01 PM
HERE IT IS!!!

this is the BEST video i can find, you kinda have to watch carefully, you can see it after 30sec where it shows rex walking from the outside, and dodging and sidestepping, it shows how the joint works, watch all of it, there are more shots than that one (not to mention its a badass scene to begin with)

Title: Re: METAL GEAR REX
Post by: CyAn1d3 on September 11, 2009, 04:43:04 PM
heres the renders as well, the top is REXs leg as it stands, and the lower is the extension of the "shin" as it takes a step

these coupled with the video, im sure you can gather as to how this beast walks

Well, there's a pretty good indicator of the last time I played MGS. (Which was....three, maybe four years ago now, since my PS1 up and died.)  But yeah, you do see it.  It's a little more obvious in MGS4, though.  Huh....Now I'm wondering how Konami animated it.

Probably just perspective and the fact that the legs are together (it's a good, polite girl, after all).

Though, as this is a pretty good mesh you should show it off better. Have you thought about cranking up the rendering settings? Trying some radiosity or some more imaginative lighting, perhaps some glowing edges around the high luminosity surfaces (or a more global bloom filter, which usually produces nice results). And of course, a small amount of bump mapping (you can probably reuse generic_panels with a higher contrast).

A friend of mine mastered a Rex model kit recently.
I think it started as a scratchbuild, but so many people wanted one, he made it a kit.
There are pics here (http://www.starshipmodeler.org/contest12/scratch_02.htm)(And his e-mail is there in a link too).

its been a good minute since ive posted anything concerning REX,
so i figgured id drop by and leave this for yall, shes rigged up and ready to run, its short and sweet, just a lil animation test i did, and only 10 seconds long ( took the com 15 minutes to render ).... the next one i leave will be my attempt at getting her to walk (and FULLY textured)
its a slow hit and miss process for me with the animation..... but coming along nicely
(also some assistance on the collisions for the floor would be sweet as well... as the feet kinda..... sink)

i THINK i can figure out how to make REX walk, and whatever the hell i want, as ive decided that the best course of action over that damn sliding "ankle" is to just handimate it.

this just ressurects my little boys dream of owning one... owell in a way i do now :) i just cant blow things up with it..... in real life.... :(

just to be nice i also decided to give anyone who wants to model their own the reference materials i used in this.
if anyone wants the papercraft cutouts let me know, the shagohod is in there as well.
