I've been working on this for a couple of weeks. I've learnt a lot about mapping and texturing compared to what I used to know. Nacelles are going to be remapped and textures redone as they are from an old model.
Basically it's going to be a Medium Cruiser made after the Constitution class but before the Excelsior. There are a few hints to show this such as the impulse engine section and the simplified nacelles (no fins ect).
This is the furthest i've got with a model and I am determined to finish this one even if it takes a while to do.
-
its simple, but i like it alot,
Nice one.
-
remember that ENT battleship from legacy? this looks like a nice evolution
-
Nice work so far mate.
-
Thanks, i'm actually quite happy how this is coming along. I've been playing around with spec maps on it, you can barely see them at certain angles while they stand out in others. You can also just about make out a hint of a 'rust ring', I wanted to do one but didn't want it to stand out to much and this is how it turned out.
I'm guessing that you mean the Yorktown class in Legacy, personally I thought that it would make a good TOS ship.

Mate, if thats the case, then you have the speculars spot on.. Looks real nice.
-
My only gripe is the blue of the nacelles. It looks too rich and cartonney.
-
All the textures on the nacelles (except the bussards) are going to be redone, They came from an old model.
-
It would be nice to see the blue indentation more rounded too :)
-
I like this ship, and those specualars are stunning. They give the ship a sort-of glossy metallic quality. I would comment on the blue nacelles, but you already said you're going to be chaning them.
The only thing I, personally, would do is raise the Nacelles to be in line with the saucer. But that might make it too simmilar to the Yorktown from legacy? Either way, I'd like to see this ship when it's complete.
-
I have been thinking about changing the way the blue indentation is. I'm keeping the nacelles in the position they currently are, they are set up so that they are unobstructed from the front and and higher didn't look so good.
-
yeah.. the blue indentation to be honest just looks lazy.. the nx 01 had a rounded indentation, the tos connie had none, but the tmp had a nice rounded one too.. chamfer those edges and ur on for a winner mate.
-
TBH, the indentation was done lazily, at the time I wasn't able to sort out smoothing issues by moving verticies so I cheated.
I've done something quick to see what I can do, it's sort of based on the Excelsior nacelle. I'm thinking off having it glow at warp and off at impulse. The texture is the same one as before, I haven't changed it yet.
-
it looks better at that angle mate to be honest, looked n=more square in the others :D
-
That's because it was more square lol. When i'd first done it al I did was select a few faces, extrudeed it negatively and beveled. This time was more involved and needed the smoothing fixed. I've made a quick ortho pic to show the design better. Lighting is stock which is why it's bright.
-
Nice ship you have there mate :) Study the stenciling on the TOS Connie a bit to get some ideas ;)
-
I will be, i'm also considering doing an intermediate pennant design. I'm thinking about using a TMP style pennant modified with the yellow boomerang instead of the delta. It's the same sort of idea as was done with the Prometheus which had it's own unique style pennant.
-
I've been working on the textures a bit today, haven't finished mapping everything though. I'm thinking of using the warp texture swap mod (can't remember the name). I've also designed a pennant for the hull.
-
I don't suppose this ship was built in the Sydney drydock? Cos that penant looks like a boomerang. :P
-
I like the new nacelle design, but I think you should lighten the blue up a few shades. From a few screencaps I found, i'd put it at (if you use photoshop): Red: 65, Green: 150, Blue: 250 as the base colour. The blue you have seems a little too dark IMO.

Dude, use the color hex code, it's far more precise than the RGB value one (since for that, you need 3 more sets of values to represent the hex correctly).
Genty, what you could do is to go to the EFFiles site and use screencaps of the EF2 TOS Connie interiors as backdrops for the windows, would look a LOT better that way.
-
I've tried it with the new blue, and tbh I agree that it looks better. I've also redrawn part of the pennant as well. I'm getting my info for pennants here http://www.seryan.com/msfm/trekmarkings/trekmarkings.htm

Yes, but don't leave the blue hue on it, let the backdrops colors do the work, I have it like that on the Novi Sad, and the Connie and Miranda I did for STExcal, and that brings stuff out, the ship suddenly feels a LOT bigger since now you have the window interiors to judge size from ;)
-
I'm guessing you mean the windows, currently i'm consentrating on placements for marking etc. I'm actually doing them in max as it makes it easier to edit later on. I'll see about adding interiors to them and see how it looks later on.
-
I've not had much chance to work on this due to having a passport interview today. I've been playing around with the nacelle bussards and grills to come up with a low power mode for when the ship is at impulse. I thought about how the deflector was done on the Refit Connie and have done something along the same lines. I've also dimmed the bussards and given them a slightly cloudy look for the impulse mode. You can see both modes in the renders.
-
Nice idea mate, looks great.
-
The bussard looks awesome, but for the grill I'd go for a more "golden" or "bronze" look than this yellow you have there ;)
-
I'm going to fine tune the colours later. I've got it set up in Max so I can easily render up new textures for them. Basically i'm using Max for most of the textures and then overlaying the aztec panelling over them at 1% opacity afterwards. It's making it much easier to do the textures than purely using photoshop.
-
thats some very good work. I think you need to lose the outline on the windows
-
I actually like having the outline on the windows, makes them stand out a bit more. I may change them to a dark grey to better blend in but I will be keeping them. I know they aren't outlined on the Connie (I actually have an MR Enterprise model which I can look at for markings etc) but it gives it more individuality.
-
with an outline they lack depth, it looks like someone just stuck them on there, you could try a bevel.. :) either way it still looks good
-
That is actually kind of the idea for them (being stuck on). They are meant to be flush with the hull and would just be painted on. I'm going to be trying Adonis' suggestion of using interior shots from the EF mod (need to find my EF disk first) on the windows which should give them all the depth they need.

The screenshots from EFFiles should suffice, I'm using them too. You have a TOS Connie interior mod (isn't the whole ship, only parts of it mind you) on EFFiles, exists for both games.
-
Thanks for the tip, i'll look into it.
I've been working on ways to improve the aztecs, I thought they looked too uniform before. This is what i've come up with so far for them.
-
Wow, that looks great.

You could add some to the two gray triangles on the saucer ventral, a bit lighter or darker version of that gray you used there too ;) You might go with the same panelling as the saucer ventral, or make it different.
-
There is actually some paneling on the triangles, they're just not showing up well in the render. I need to do some work on the spec map to get them to stand out more. I found a great way to do random paneling in Max. I'm considering putting something together to show how I did the saucer panels.
-
The Speculars look spot on.

You should i would like to see how. your ship is looking very real in that render genty.
-
I've sorted the specs on the triangles and brightened them so they stand out better. I'll work on sorting out an example of that I did for the hull plating at some point, but to begin with you need Max, the Max greebles plugin and Photoshop or an equivalent program.
-
Looking good mate.
-
I've managed to get a bit done. I've textured the front part of the secondary hull and have given it a slight green tint. I still need to retexture the nacelles and map both the impulse and bridge sections.
Edit: I've just added some glows to behind the deflector. I thought it looked too plain and i've tried to make it remenisant of the glows around the dish on the Refit Connie.
-
Yeah, those lights behind the deflector dish makes her scream more advanced than the TOS Connie IMHO. :D
-

If it were designated as a "Phase 2" era ship, it would look just right. In between the stages of the TOS Connie, and the TMP Connie.

Which just so happens to be the Era i'm aiming for :D
-
I've started work on the nacelle textures. After doing the aztecs on them i've decided i'm going to go back and redo the ones on the secondary hull, they seem to cluttered in comparison.
-
I love this. Can't wait.
I would suggest that you lighten those hull lines a little bit near the deflector. The lines with the windows in them I mean.
-
I've actually already done that. I recoloured them while redoing the panelling for the hull. I'll have some new pics tomorrow.
-
lookin good. tho TOS ships have no place on my install (not enough room and my performance sux as it is), i still like the look of this :) keep it up
-
This ship is way cool and I love the little lights behind the dish. You'll have another download here :)
-
Thanks for the comments, this is actually the best a model i've done has tuned out. I generally only get to the making stage and never get around to texturing.
I've started on the registries on the saucer, i'll be adding more to the textures later on.
-
That is a beauty.
Nuff said.
-
Dude, I'm attaching the most cannon TOS fonts known to me to this post. :D
-
Just thinking...cos this is more phase 2 than TOS, the fonts might be a bit more...advanced? :P
-
Dude, I'm attaching the most cannon TOS fonts known to me to this post. :D
I am actually using the Airborne font :) It's probably just the angle of the pic's which is making them look different..
I prefer the TOS font style for the early ships. I could always do another ship with a newer font style later on.
-
looks real nice, although I would place the font az an aztec of its own, so it has not got panels running through the reg.
-
I'm going to be finalising the spec maps once the main texture is done. It saves having to redo it every time I make a change.
I decided to test it out in game today. The textures aren't finished and there are a couple of parts using the wrong texture (mapping is done just no texture made yet) at the moment but I wanted to see how it was in game. Here are some test shots of it in game.
-
Is it me or does it look a bit pale ingame?
-
I took them in the Banzai 1 map so as to get the specs showing up. I've not tried it in other systems yet. The textures though where deliberately light and probably seemed darker in the maps due to the lighting.

You get better specular lighting while in warp.
Also, Omega Draconis 2 is good if you want to see speculars in-game.
Anyway, this ship is pretty. I look forward to playing with it.
-
those pinhole lights behind the dish are the (pardon the pun) brightest idea I've seen for OS types
Adonis: cheers on those fonts. the equivalent to Microgramma is VERY hard to find (i had to use Eurostyle on the Gabriel), and also wanted to use the font on regular web-browsing, too
Billz: I'll note that system for my own ship testing. thanks.
-
I put those lights in because I thought it looked a bit bland, had the advantage of looking more advanced.
I've taked some new pics during warp and in the Omega Dragonis system to show of the specs. I also made a brief vid of it going into warp.
-
I'm loving those Aztecs. that's the first time I've seen even glows take on the Star's color, though.
-
I think they're supposed to change from amber to blue... like a warm up/activation sequence. Guessing amber is 'stand-by' mode?
And it looks... wow, just wow. A very nice ship, although I think the nacelle flare when warping needs moving a bit.
-
It looks very elegant, will you be texturing the bridge too
-
Yep, amber is the standby colour, it switches to blue as you go to warp. I haven't made any hardpoints, i'm currently just using ones from another ship to test it out.
The bridge will be textured, i've got it mapped, it's just got a placeholder testure at the moment. I wanted to test how it damaged in game.
-
Very good stuff genty. Would it be wrong of me to say, "moar"? :P
-
I know this hasn't been updated in a while, I haven't had access to the computer with it on. I got access back last night and decided to have a play around with the pylons. The original Enterprise had the grills on the pylons so I decided to make some for this, but with my own take on them. It adds to the uniquness of it.
-
Wow. I totally missed this thread. Those are some sweet textures you made, genty! And I love the amber-to-blue nacelle grills! That's a unique touch.
-
Thanks Phaser, i've always had problems making textures and mapping them but i'm finally getting the hang of it.
At the suggestion of ChiefBrex i've smoothed out the rim of the saucer. Because of the way themesh was I had to do it manually as none of the tools worked. Took ages to do but it was worth the effort.
-
how far along are you on this? in-game doesn't mean it's at release level.
now that I've seen the actuall, physical model of the original enterprise, it turns out the fonts provided earlier are an exact match, where I thought they were too "football uniform-ish"
-
The main thing I need to do now is to map the impulse section, that's the last mapping I have to do. Then it's just a matter of finishing off the textures and then do a final export. After that it's just the hardpoints that need to be done and it's finished. I don't have much time to work on it so it may be a while before it's finished but i'm determined that it'll get released at some point.
-
I've started texturing the bridge section. I'm going to start working on windows soon as well. Had to remap the saucer rim so that any windows I do won't look stretched.
-
I've finally got around to doing some more texturing, not had much free time to work on it. I've done up some textures for the aft of the secondary hull as well as starting on windows for the rest of the ship. Got the saucer rim windows done so far. Still need to do some windos for the neck.
-
Thats a beauty! Kinda looks like a TOS Galaxy! haha
-
I've never thought about it that way, I guess some of the basics are similar though.
I decided to do a render to show the ship off a bit better not done one like this for ages.
Edit: Pic fixed
-
This ship looks really good. But i guess it's in emergency reverse warp, lol.
-
female ensign at conn ;) :funny
-
Oops :funny. I did the Warp streaks ages ago and forgot which way they went. I'll upload a fixed version in a bit once it's rendered.
Edit: Pic updated
