Title: Dalek's WIP's - Something new and pretty...
Post by: Dalek on October 25, 2009, 01:01:42 PM
"And so it begins" as a certain Vorlon once said.

I have begun (under the tutorship of limey) to model! :D My first project is the EAS Hyperion Class from Babylon 5.

Renders attached. :)

PS. 22 polies in just under 4 hours! xD

Well, hopefully one day I'll be that good. For now...boxes. :P

I wish I could do boxes too.  :( Oh well, once my job contract ends, i will have time to start training  :funny Good luck, and godspeed with this design.

Update. Chamfering applied.

Edit: Moar Updatez.

Cool stuff, Dalek. :]

Make sure that when you chamfer, you weld the vertexes of any resulting connecting edges. Otherwise you could have a problem later on. Been there, done that, wasn't pretty. xD I say this because I see your chamfering has resulted in two edges coming together at their ends. I can supply you with a pic if you'd like.

Good work so far buddy.

I'm remoddeling the blue and red sections into one whole section (oddly enough its purple) because it seems a lot easier.

Could you possibly point out the weird-chamfered-connecty areas? Modelling-eejit mode is active lol.

He means here :P

As for those, when while modelling (I think probably while chamfering) some crazy crap happened with the mesh and I figured it was easier to fix than try to (ineptly) explain how to fix it, and during that, I did weld said verts together.

Taking a break from the Hyperion, decided to make something a bit more simple. A Jumpgate! :P

Unfortunately, it's getting a bit on the high poly side, but I'll make it anyway :).

Post by: Dalek on October 30, 2009, 02:16:41 PM
Finished thing and it's stupidly high poly.

That it may be, but it does look sweet!

I think I may have to increase the size of the solar panels a little...and also de-polify pretty much everything. xD

it looks good... what IS the poly count anyway?
Title: Re: Dalek's WIP's - Babylon 5 Stuff
Post by: tiqhud on October 30, 2009, 04:44:00 PM
you probably cut polys, by making the purpleish bars one bar, instead of the goldish thing in the middle.

Post by: Dalek on October 30, 2009, 05:01:19 PM
I had done that the first time round and it still wasn't enough. It was a loooong way off.

But thanks to the magical powers of limey, I have a 16k poly Jumpgate. :D

If it isn't for BC, you can afford to add in some extra detailing. If it's done right, you won't even be looking at a large poly increase. [for example, my bridge is only about 150k, with modeled details rather than textures and bump maps/speculars.. that's also including corridors and another room I've been working on.]

Vree Xorr Vessel. Nice and easy, will probably redo the majority of it but at the minute it sits just under 3k polies. :)

Nice! Will this ever see it's way into BC?
Title: Re: Dalek's WIP's - EAS Hyperion finished
Post by: Dalek on December 05, 2009, 05:35:39 PM
I certainly hope. It's well within the poly limit (9741 polies) and there is loads of cleaning up that can be done and no doubt numerous mesh related errors...:P Then, I'll learn how to map (torturing limey more like xD) and texture and wham, hopefully, it'll be, ALIVE!
Title: Re: Dalek's WIP's - EAS Hyperion finished

and it will probably look better than what it ever looked like on tv..  :funny

Good stuff. Looks like you have some smoothing to sort through and verts to weld up, but otherwise from what I can see this is pretty good work. You've learned very quickly little buddy. I'm proud of ya! :D -feeds cookies-

*grumble* That was quicker than I thought. :P This one is going to be more reminscent of the 8th Doctor TV (TV = Time Vortex) as I'm not that good with Max yet but its also super easy to create. All the textures I've used are just the nebulas from BC. xD

It's an omni with a default Max lens flare. Alas, these do not work in BC. :(

Right, made a lot more progress on it, moved a few planets around, added new pylons and connectors (haven't finished placing all of them yet), and I've got a temporary sun sitting in the middle. It's hard to tell what is where in some pics lol. :)

Title: Re: Dalek's WIP's - Something new and pretty...
Post by: Dalek on March 23, 2010, 06:25:53 PM
Its my way of simply not calling it TARDIS. I thought my design looked vaguely Voyager (central/below column) but also had elements of a modern University. V + U = VU + TARDIS = vuTARDIS. :P
Title: Re: Dalek's WIP's - Something new and pretty...
Post by: limey BSc. on March 23, 2010, 06:37:27 PM
but also had elements of a modern University.

Surely more like a very very old university? Looks more to me like something from Kings College, Cambridge (http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:King%27s_College_under_snow.JPG) than, say, Salford (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Maxwell_Building,_Salford_University.jpg).

But whichever, it looks awesome :D It does need some walls though :P

Yes yes yes, mibbe later. :P

never seen original

Well, depends on your defitinion of "original". There are many many designs, all canon and official. :)

Well when the 5th Doctor met the 10th in Time Crash (children in need special) he mentioned the 10th Doctor had changed the screen saver to coral so I'd call this one post modern?

I'm assuming the tardis interior will change under the 11th doctor as the control room was wrecked during the re-gen.

Any way great job, you skills are growing young one.

The Console is slowly building up. :) Awesome keyboard was made by limey who copied it from Tony Starks keyboard. :P

Nice work Dalek, although the console looks kind of out of place right now.

Yeah, it is a little, might remake the base to conform to the shape of the keyboard itself.

hmm...give me a mite, and i might.
(brits, correct me)
we don't know what Doctor 2's is, however...most of series 2 was erased in recycling efforts by the BBC (videotape being horribly expensive, then)

i've only seen the pilot ("An Uneathly Child") for series one
series three would be sparse (that's when the Doctor was Grounded)
Series 4/5/6 i could probably do (anybody feel like the Tom Baker alternate console room?)
i've seen only 5 eps of series 7
USDM series 8 movie doesn't count
9/10 are based on 8, and are way out of the league of anybody here

Title: Re: Dalek's WIP's - Something new and pretty...
Post by: Dalek on March 28, 2010, 11:30:46 AM
I'm assuming by "series" you mean "Doctor" because there are 30 series' (the upcoming series is no. 31).

we don't know what Doctor 2's is, however...most of series 2 was erased in recycling efforts by the BBC (videotape being horribly expensive, then)

Nope, wasn't about price. It was about space. They had whole rooms of old tapes lying around so they got rid of them to make for newer stuff. From clips I have seen the 2nd Doctors TARDIS was just the 1st Doctors TARDIS and only gets a real change by the time Pertwee came along (Troughton commenting in The Three Doctors", "Ooh, I like what you've done with the place.")

3rd Doctors TARDIS stayed relatively the same till The Five Doctors in which a much more hi-tech console was introduced (5th Doctor) which stayed the same through to the end of the series in 1986 (7th Doctor).

USDM series 8 movie doesn't count

Yes it does. If the 8th Doctor was included in the info stamp shown in The Next Doctor, then that effectively makes any televised 8th Doctor apperances accurate. Also, the Master says in "The Sound of Drums" that the Time Lords resurrected him from The Eye of Harmony which is how the Master died in the Movie.

9/10 are based on 8, and are way out of the league of anybody here

Not necessarily. I've seen a 9/10 Doctor TARDIS interior which looks relatively low poly out there on the interwebs. I'll try and find it.

I tend to lump the doctors by incarnations and consider THAT the "series".  i assumed that poor Paul McGan(sp) is considered Dis-Continuity by Purist Whovians just because it was made here in the states.

I figure the 4/5/6 console room would be the simplest to do.  also, I seem to remember the riser before "tristan"/wierdo was a different configuration.  anybody got a pic? (yes, I've seen "all creatures"...wish I'd taped a couple)

This is rather reminicent of the animated "Scream of the Shalka" Tardis, you know the one that starred Richard E Grant as the 9th Doctor and Derek Jacobi as the robotic version of the Master (Jacobi would infact go on to play the Master in the revived series epidsoe Utopia) it also features a bit part voice appearance from the future Doctor, David Tennant. Still this is very very cool
