Title: TMP Challenger/Constellation Class & Excelsior
Post by: Villain on March 30, 2010, 09:25:10 AM
A dropped design I've always admired, bashed from an old design I've always loved. It featured in one of the comics though I couldn't tell you which exactly offhand.

Either way, I figured I'd show some progress. I'm currently unsure whether I should use the typical TMP nacelles or the Endeavour style ones that seem to be on every Stargazer blueprint (Which don't match with the studio model, apparently.)

EDIT: (Second render wasn't working. Also, have I mentioned LW9 is awesome?)

Interesting design :) and I love TMP ships ;)

I'm glad you think so... The Constellation Class strikes me as a very adaptable design, with how the nacelles are attached to the saucer, freeing up the lower area.

Has anyone got any suggestions as to nacelles?

Love the design, not sure what you should do with the nacelles. But I'm sure you'll think of something.

I've got that comic in some anthology book thingamybob here somewhere..

I DEFINATELY remember that ship though. Wasn't it Riker's ex bird in charge of it when they get attacked and the ent-d has to come to the rescue? USS Marco Polo I think.. not 100% though

Slight update on the nacelles before I call it a night.

mind putting those coold dual grilles on nacelles front section ??? they would cool whole lot better ;) are you going to make Constellation from this beauty ? I could give you a helping hand with textures ;)

An update on the Constellation version. ...Y'know, it strikes me that the saucer could use some more polys. Damn those TMP nacelles are irritating to model.  :roll The vents on the front will be done, promise.

I belive a right royal pain in the posterior. I know I've been there, but yours are coming along nicely.

Thank you, Baz. Could you perhaps give me some pointers on how you modelled the front caps of the warp nacelles? It'd really help speed things along as it just baffles me currently (They keep turning out blocky and rough  :banghead: )

Lookin' good.

If you do finish it though, make sure that the scaling is right, Bones's mod that he mentioned is awesome, but much too large in scale.

Aye, small detail I forgot to adjust, huge problem in game :funny

Holy thread revival. Been optimizing the Constellation model a bit between working on the rear end of Luroks Danube wip. Felt a little inspired, sort of, so I threw together a quick Excelsior model for the heck of it (everyone should go for it at some point imo  :funny), that's only really missing the rear cargo section, shuttlebay, bridge and sensor dome. Still undecided on modelling the weird grill things in or saving the polycount (Currently like 12k tris).

Constellation (the other Connie LOL) and Excelsior model look awesome....can't wait to see more...and whats up with the Challenger?? i only see the Connie lol and Excelsior..keep up the great work Prime!!! you're doing two gallant ladies justice indeed. Ive been waiting for a cannon looking Constellation class for so long man...and cannon meaning the single turbo lift on the bridge dome..

Some nice clean models you have there. And toy TMP nacelles look good.

Thank you! The Danube model has been teaching me a lot, I really think it's helped push me a little further in the right direction, now all I need to do is catch up to the others.  :funny But I don't know if I can run that fast, I'd have to have a cigarette break or three!

The Challenger model wasn't included in the render because it's just a small kitbash (And I'm having trouble settling on a refit Enterprise style deflector or something a little different). Otherwise, she's only a little behind the Constellation in terms of being complete. The Constellation model is only missing a little detail on the impulse engines and the two huge sensor pods.

Some nice clean models you have there. And toy TMP nacelles look good.

Thanks Baz, though I dunno if I'll ever be content with the nacelles.  :funny But I figure if I can finish it off, there's nothing stopping me from a v2.

Bones mate, I might be taking you up on that offer for help sometime soon. :P

Tiny update before I go to bed. Realised the schematics I was going off of weren't accurate to the studio model. Errors have been rectified, bridge module is temporary.

Nice work mate,

you have improved.. now stick all those bits together in a nice unified mesh

Currently in process of cleaning up errors after unifying the mesh. Bridge Model will get slapped on right after that.

I can certainly vouch for that! Looking good! :)

Looks smooth, I take it the elements of the ship in a different colour are still (at this stage) separate objects?

Still, a nice looking ship, and well pieced together.

The Excelsior Class is just one of those ships that looks good all the time.  Whether she's next to a Constitution Class or a Galaxy Class she just looks like she belongs.  But you know what would be really neat?  A refit-Excelsior to go along with the original.  Just an idea, not a request.  Keep up the good work  :)

Nah, Lightwave groups retain colours after boolean. Just didn't repaint them because... I dunno.  :funny Currently it's about as done as the Constellation, so I'm going to drop the bridge onto it and make sure the Constellation gets a little more attention to the fronts of the nacelles.

Whats the poly cont on the Excelsior? im looking to replace the one i have currently..but Wiley's is too high poly for rig at the current moment....And also the Constellation..whats the count on her? wanna reenact 'Peak Performance' and 'The Battle' LOL

As she currently stands, 15k. I'm thinking of avoiding modelling the grille style detail on the neck and nacelles, as BC doesn't seem to like lighting detailed stuff too well. Constellation is at 13k.

awesome Prime...about how many sections/textures will the model have?
Title: Re: TMP Challenger/Constellation Class & Excelsior
Post by: Villain on May 29, 2010, 02:35:30 PM
Dunno that yet I'm very tempted to take a shot at texturing the Constellation on my own as well as releasing the mesh for anyone who wants to toy with it for BC. Given that it'd be my first try at proper texturing, the work won't be too spiffy, but if I can fit it all on a x1024 map then I'll be happy.

Do not do that..

The whole ship should sit on a 2048 x 2048 as a minimum...  most people use a 1024 sheet for the saucer alone..  quality mate, think quality

He didn't. He did it on one 2048 sheet and mapped in 2 places if there was a weapon/sensor pod.

Well, I finally had some time to sit down and play with Lightwave today, so I thought I'd get back onto the Challenger. The hull as seen in the comic didn't look right to me in 3d, so I went with a Connie hull (Which seems to be the only other version of the class I could find on the internet. :idk:) I personally prefer this version, though I couldn't honestly tell you why. I'm sticking with the Constellation hull though because there are enough Connie kitbashes, I think.

Oh, you're talking about the Excel! I was thinking ":wtf The impulse engines look like that on the studio model"  Yeah, that'll get done when I get back to her. Cheers.
