Title: Luna-class Starship - Another Update
Post by: CaptainRussell on February 10, 2007, 05:16:43 PM
This is supposedly the class of Riker's USS Titan.  I just finished the model (well sort of) today and put it into Bridge Commander for a test run, and it damages very well.  The model has 13264 polygons, and still needs a few smoothing errors taken care of.  I plan on following the basic texturing of some cartoon pictures that I have of the Luna-class, but this ship will likely have high-detail Sovereign-style textures, and will of course be cut up to use the Skinning & Damaging Tool.

Not everything on this ship is "canon" as the nacelles were incredibly-difficult to make after the lame cartoons that I used to make the ship - I also think that the aft tips of the nacelles should be fixed up to look a little better.  I also went with a shuttle bay that is not the dome style like a Sovereign-class, since it didn't look good on this model.

Have a look at the screenshots from Bridge Commander (Milkshape renders aren't very exciting):

It might not be exactly canon to the one seen on the novel covers but its pretty damn close and thats good enough.

Nice job. Cant wait to see it textured. Im hoping that this wont mess up my bridge charcters like the your 2nd version of the Nebula class seemed to. Im still not quite sure why that happened.

Anyway, really cool to see someone finally making this.

Don't worry there won't be any special scripting that could impact on anybody's game.

I also forgot to say that the NX Luna will not have the torpedo pod and will have blue stripes instead of red ones.

Oh yeah, and does anybody want an MVAM Captain's yacht?  I modelled the bottom of the Captain's yacht (clearly visible) using a modified campher and wondered if anyone would care about this.

Im impressed CR but i thought that the shuttlebay doors were the classic clamshell design seen on the TOS/TMP Enterprise/A and the ends of the nacelles need work i hate to say but overall the work is outstanding

LOL.  I already know that the nacelle ends suck.

However I'm sticking with the shuttle bay that I have - I made a clam one for it originally and it didn't look good.

I've got the actual pictures of the ship, somewhere on my photobucket. I could send them to you, but if you like prefer  the comic one go ahead. In fact now that I think about it, wouldn't that be some sort of copyright thing if you made the model after the actual thing? I don't know, nor care.

It's CR's work, which means it'll be awesome ship. Maybe, just maybe, he'll let a hardcore CR fan (seriously, I've got nearly everything I could get my hands on that CR worked on, I did searches for his stuff...I need to get a life sometime in the near future  8)) he'll let me beta-test it or something.

LOL. :funny

I like what you have done great modelling, but I don't like the design sorry, not my idea of what rikers ship would be :(

It's not my idea of one either - my idea would be something intermediate in firepower between a Galaxy and Sovereign (after all Riker turned down a Nebula-class, which is way cooler than a Luna-class!), but this design kind of grew on me so I decided to make it, especially since LC has lately been tackling everything that needs replacement.  I'm also thinking of doing a new Akira-class, since this ship is very similar to an Akira (I wouldn't have too much trouble making an Akira).

Looks good Russell, Can't wait for her textures, I'm SURE They're gonna look great :)

Yes, they will. 8)

CR when you texture her can you add the thruster packs, the designer didnt know anything about them at the time.

As in RCS thrusters?  Those will be modelled onto the trim along the edge of the saucer that is submerged.

Actually I've reconsidered the MVAM thing since there is no impulse engine for the stardrive anywhere on my model or any of the pictures I've used - it was only on the Terran Empire version that Barnes posted a picture of.

ah ok, nvm, i'll stop being annoying :P  i can understand why you wouldnt want it to be mvam capable :)

Actually i could make it MVAM capable quite easily by simply modelling on the top of the stardrive and bottom of the saucer that are concealed when the ship is together, and it would look really good too.

However there is NO good place for an impulse engine to be modelled to the stardrive portion of the ship, since it has a sleek structure like a Sovereign-class.  Also if I did make this ship MVAM capable it would probably end up with well over 18000 polygons when together.

What I need to do is make the nacelles look better and then get going texturing this ship.

.... tried extruding it from a pylon? or welding it to a pylon? by welding I mean a small model merged by boolean operation with the pylon
would give it kinda NX-01's look on the impulse drives.
Title: Re: Luna-class Starship
Post by: mayhemuk on February 14, 2007, 04:09:42 PM
I have to be boring and say leave it be, it is just fine as it is, if anything the normal titan can deploy the saucer when the stardrive is smashed up like most normal fed ships.

LOL.  You mean cut a gap into a pylon, build an impulse engine, and scoot it up to it and connect it?  There is no "boolean" operation in MS3D - you take spheres and cylinders and make what you want by scaling, trimming, and snapping the vertices of your meshes together to make a good, heavily-connected model that damages well.

I'm leaving this model as-is other than dealing with the unsightly aft nacelle tips.

Title: Re: Luna-class Starship
Post by: CaptainRussell on February 16, 2007, 12:57:53 PM
I've fixed the one-quarter spheres on the aft nacelle tips; expect to see screenshots of the mesh later today, along with perhaps some texturing.  I've also modelled a couple of RCS thrusters (I need 4 more, which will not be a problem since they're just submerged boxes).  The big deal will be the insane amount of time that it will take to draw all of the little "Z", "T", "L", and "l" shapes that make up the hull plating on newer Federations ships.

I'm sure you all will like the end results; the ship will be cut up to use the Skinning & Damaging Tool and hopefully I can keep the registry sizes down at 1024x1024 (I've been fearing that I may have to use 2048x1024 registries for better detail).  I've obtained the names of all Luna-class ships from the Star Trek books (the ones that I plan on using anyway, since some of them conflict with ships that I know of, like the Luna-class USS Europa) and will be including registries for them.  However, I'm at a loss for the registry numbers of the ships other than the USS Titan, which is NCC-80102 - could some one provide me with regisry numbers for other Luna-class ships in the books (if they're given in the books, none of which I've ever read)? :D

With the RCS thrusters, the new nacelle tail grilles, and the new phaser strips on the nacelle pylons, this model is done; the model now has 13500 polygons.

I found names in the back of the first book. No reg numbers, but I think there's one ot two reg numbers mentioned in the books, I'm not about to re-read them. If you want the 10 other names, I can give them to you, but it seems you'll have to make up numbers.

Title: Re: Luna-class Starship - UPDATED

Really big textures - a 2048x2048 on each side of the saucer, and a 2048x2048 for everything else except bussards, impulse engines, grilles, and the registry, which will have its own 1024x1024.

Here are some shots of the ship that show all of the glowy stuff that I just made (these are the easiest textures to make since you can use patterns and the blurring/hue/saturation/highlight/midtone tools a lot after drawing only basic jagged images).

The glow textures are separate so that they won't look wierd when speculars activate (when an engine glow is part of a hull plating texture and a specular is made for that texture, the engine glow will not look right when speculars activate) - the impulse engines are a 512x256x32, the deflector is a 256x256x32, the grilles are a 512x128x32, and the bussards are a 256x256x32.

Since the top of the saucer flows into the stardrive so well, I'm putting that onto a single large texture map, probably a 4096x2048 as it stands right now (there's a bunch of other stuff on this map too - whatever I can squash into it).  The bottom of the saucer will be a 2048x2048, and there will be another texture (either a 2048x1024 or 2048x2048) that will include everything else.  I may release a "High" version that has textures that are 25% normal area, and leave the really big ones as an "Ultra" version - I was looking on BC Files and saw that the CG Sovereign ultra textures included a 4096x2048 version of "hull_glow.tga" so I think that I could get away with this as well.  Oh yeah, and the registries will be either 1024x1024 or 2048x1024.

I haven't been doing anything on this ship for the last week or so; I've been swamped with tests (got another one tommorow in pharmacology/medicinal chemistry).  I've also started modelling new guns for Far Cry (I just finished .357, .44, and .50 barrels for a Desert Eagle last night - a real pain in the ass) so that's sort of got me a little distracted right now.

Not yet; as I said earlier I've been busy with modelling guns for Far Cry, and just today I was able to get some work done.

I'll probably start textures for this ship in a week or so - it's going to be a very long drawn-out process since the texture maps I'm making are huge.

I have a decent math background in solid analytic geometry and vector/tensor analysis so surface manipulation is very easy for me, which is why I was able to learn how to model quickly - also if you guys still want to drool over the Desert Eagle models you can do so here:

http://teamlynxifer.co.uk/bcc/index.php/topic,962.0.html (http://teamlynxifer.co.uk/bcc/index.php/topic,962.0.html)

As far as tutorials go I messed around in Milkshape for a while until I got the hang of the main tools that I use in that program, and also talked to LC a lot about modelling (back when I first started out and made all those shitty models that were loaded with smoothing errors, like the Intimidator V1.0).

I have a decent math background in solid analytic geometry and vector/tensor analysis so surface manipulation is very easy for me, which is why I was able to learn how to model quickly

In Lamen's Terms please? :P LOL just kidding, although I wasn't too great in math I'm afraid.  What you have done is looking hecka good though man, keep up the good work :).

No, Mustang does retextures, everyone of his ships have been Angelwings. So it would be the USS Angelwings C, the Luna class starship.

Angelwings-C?  What the hell would a Luna-class be doing replacing a Kelvin Refit or an Intimidator, both of which are many times more powerful with much larger armaments than a Luna.

LOL.  Sure you can make a registry for this ship after it's released.

Exactly how many of those ships will they have to build in a five year period, anyway?  That's one posting I sure wouldn't want. :D

Is it called the Angelwings because if you serve on it for more that week you're likely to get blown up and get angel's wings?

"Captain's Log, stardate 59143.2.  We've left space dock for the first ti.... ARGGHHHHH!!!" *kaboom*

I suggest USS Deathtrap, or perhaps, USS Titanic.

please pardon the diversion, but... ahh, that felt good.  i really needed to get that off my chest.  hopefully i'm entitled to this kinda crap once in a while. :)

anyhoo, carry on lads.

btw, CR, where the heck are those pretty textures we all know you can do?  I demand an explanation immediately, lest you find out there's only one way out of here, and that's in a body bag, from dog injuries.

LC may be tweaking this model and putting the textures on it, since I've lately been really immersed in my Far Cry project.  However, Star Trek Excalibur is not due out for many months, so I will likely still have plenty of time to texture this thing exactly the way I want it, and make lots of nice registries for it.

The next post in this thread should be either LC or me with some updated progress on this ship. :arms:

they are only concept schematics, the ones being released with the book will be 3d model renders which i need for textures for my model, too bad ST titan's next book is scheduled for release at the end of the year i hope that changes to a sooner release date

Okay, here's something that might interest everyone.  After some careful drawing tonight on one of the 2048x2048s that I have prepared for texturing this ship, I've done most of the top of the stardrive, all of the RCS thrusters, and part of the Akira bumps.  The hardest part about texturing a starship for me is actually sitting down and starting the job - same thing goes for me with writing papers/reports; finally I have started on this, and it should be done within a couple of weeks.  I have made a completed hardpoint for this ship as well, so all that's left is texturing, icon, and registries.

IMO this ship is as much a Kitbash as any other vessel in the Fed fleet. The Saladin, Hermes, the Miranda, the Constellation, the Nebula, etc. are all kitbashes of the current Top-of-the-Line vessel. Looks good CR.

If I may make a suggestion Russell, just a bit of constructive criticism :).  The windows, every cannon ship I've seen has had them rounded.  I think it would look much better this way.  Other than that, lookin hot!  :)

The windows have rounded corners; according to the cartoon views that I used to make this ship, most of the windows are squared with round corners (except the ones on the stardrive bottom and sides).

I've also already made high-contrast speculars for the textures that I've done; that last shot is it an angle where they don't activate however.
