what im on about here is the appearence the prototype reman shield gives your ship being made for the KM galaxy class, i myself will be...attempting this, heres an image of what im aiming for (http://img141.imageshack.us/img141/4338/galreman4.png)
if anyone else wants to give this ago then do so, i may need help on this anyways :P
though is this effect even possible in BC before i jump in ahead of myself?
-
I'm pretty sure it can be done to the individual ship textures easily, but if you mean as a procedural texture for any ship (like the shield in STO) I'm not sure you can do that.
-
i mean individual ship textures using the same style as the reman shield. and i was on about the slightly glossy effect the shield gives the ships, i suppose that could be done with the speculars?
-
yeah, that would be fairly easy to do with speculars if you tweak them just right.
-
well if started work i did the nacells bussard and grille textures first so i could be sure to get a close match, attached is my efforts so far.
-
I like it. Although I think you might want to give the bussards and warp grille one shade of green lighter, that is if you're trying to get as close as possible to the STO Reman color scheme.
Question, are you gonna try and do the honeycomb effect as well?
-
I love the Reman shields in STO! They actually make a Luna-class look bad-ass!
-
i am gonna try the honeycombe patterns, but as im not very good at making textures i may need help.
also because this is BC im only going for a close match, not exact, so if shades are slightly off dont worry, it actually looks better in BC when the alpha channels are in effect.

I think I can offer some advice here: when creating the hexagonal hull plating for my Kessok ships, I found that Google Images contained a whole bunch of tessellated hexagonal grids you can use. I just imported one into photoshop and removed the white sections with the wand tool. They're quite easy to tile across as well.
Something like this might be usefu: (just say if you want the image removed)
-
Actually that hexagonal grid is gonna help alot, thogh now im gonna have to spend hors looking at my ship on STO to see how im gonna do this.
EDIT
was just looking on the net and found the texture file Cryptic used for the reman shield look, wonder if theres a way to get it to work in this project?
ive attached it as some source material so people can help me figure this out.....
-
I've got an idea how you could implement this stuff without baking it into textures/ alphas or speculars ;) you should try to add that new glow thingy ;)
-
yeah like i could even do that....i mean ive attempted it on the solaris, but had no luck.
bones could you look into getting this texture to work with the KM Galaxy?
ive made a start by replacing parts of textures to get the nacells done, but im really struggling.
-
dunno, I never tried that new glow method myself, could give it a try but not this week, tomorrow afternoon I have a flight to Canada and most likely it will be a week of sightseeing :P I could try next week tho...
-
ive made more progress, ive made the alpha channels more up to date and have Slowly managed to edit the textures, im only going for as close as possible here, so enjoy so far, spec maps are gonna take some time to do, but heres what ive got (ingame)
-
good progress thus far!
cookie!
-
Very nice progress.
-
ok im on to doing the saucer, but heres where im gonna struggle, so my guestion is, can ANYONE use the texture file i poster to do the saucer textures? my attempts have not been the best.
anyways heres my work on the stardrive (one texture left to do....)
-
Oh that actually looks kinda cool! Keep at it.
-
HMMMM, looks mean.
-
HELL Yeah, though the saucer textures are a pain and i have no idea how im gonna do em....
-
very quick update here, im not gonna be able to work on this for a week as my birthday is coming up and im also gonna be busy with other life stuff, but that doesnt mean this is dead!
for thos interested im gonna be 16.
-
"real" life? what the hell is that?
happy 16th brohan.
enjoy youth whilist is lasts :P
-
The big 16!! Happy birthday dude!
-
its not till the 27th this month, but thx XD

Year and two days older :p
-
yeah the saucer texture im not going to be able to do  though the rest is looking good, im going to start on the spec maps soon, if anyone wants to help me get the saucer done your welcome to do so.
-
so what is it you can't do about saucer ? maybe I could point you into right direction ;)
-
i just cant do it in general, im not matching the pattern i had on the stardrive and i need to make the escape pod hatches black. and im generally finding it hard to get it to match and look like its part of the ship and not just slapped on... if that made any sence?
if you need the texture files ie already done feel free to ask for em...
-
Sorry mate, I would help ya out with it but no time ATM... if you won't find anyone else then I could take a look at it in around 2 week ;)

is it the mapping on the model itself you cant do? or what specifically?
-
i cant really be specific, but the basic problem im having is making the saucer match the rest of the ship withought looking too chopped and changed and also having black escape pod hatches is a bit of a though one with my limited software.

right, but what im trying to figure out is wether your having this issue as a mapping issue, or what not. a few rendered shots of what it looks like with said texture will help ALOT more than just telling me ;) (also try to take a screenie of what your UVW mapping window looks like, that will help as well) depending on wether i feel like getting MAX running tonight i might be able to take a look see. but post some renders FIRST
-
this is the default KM galaxy class model, not a new model itself.

i want to see what it looks like WITH your textures applied, do some close up renders of the problem areas (i know you can, you posted renders before on this thread) as well as an overall shot. this will help determine how to fix the problem, if we cant SEE it, we cant tell you exactly what to do to fix it bro ;)
-
ok so ill do what it did an open it with MPE cuz thats what i was doing....

its better than nothin :idk:
-
the current texture i have is UGLY and misproportioned, but here it is:
-
to me that looks like a mapping issue. and not that hard of one to fix honestly
-
all i did was mash parts of the STO texture file together, could have done that ALOT better... :banghead:
-
well you should be able to tweak them so that they match up, itll just take time and patience
-
problem is if i do tweak em it wont save properly, i dont know why thats happening, plus i cant layer the escape pods over because the when i try to it just selects everything....

try editing them, save them under a different filename in your program, then go into windows and rename them to what you need yourself, that MAY circumvent that issue
-
kk, though id still like to see what others can come up with to help..
-
other than tweaking the UVW mapping on the model, i dont see much that can be done. :idk:
BUUUT ive been wrong before..
