School has resumed, and this semester my instructor gave me permission to do an Independent Study (I can do whatever I want!). :dance
My project for this semester- Design and build a modernized version of the 1980s Delorean sports car, and create a 30-second TV commercial advertising the car, along with advertisement posters.
I was researching the Lamborghini Murcielago, and liked the back part of the car, so I'm using that in my design. When I get into the actual 3D construction of the car, I'll know the true dimensions and contours.
I don't normally build cars, so this may be a nice challenge. I will be posting wip pics of the car here. Stay tuned!

Comments and critique are welcome.

This sounds interesting. What are you going to do about those notorious bat-wing doors?
-
A new DeLorean design, eh? Coolness. Just don't forget the flux capacitor! :P
-
A new DeLorean concept, eh? I can help where I can and as automotive mechanic I can give few pointers when needed. :) Shall it be mid or rear engined? 2-seater or perhaps three as in McLaren F1? Sports, GT-style or supercar?
-
What are you going to do about those notorious bat-wing doors?
Full interior, gull wing doors, rear engined, 2-seater.
Just don't forget the flux capacitor!
That will be after this semester.
-
Hmm.. I think GM's 3.7l V6 would suit this car well. Also, it does need that louver on the rear window.
-

Would be fun to see your take on a "2012 Delorean" Time Machine :)
-

Don't put some Yankee POS engine in it. DeLorean was from Northern Island. Put the a Jag V8 in it. Hell, put Aston's V12 in it! :P
-
Nice and glad someone knows where they were built!
-
DeLorian used to be with Ford, so mabey something from Ford Europe, then? I got it, bum one of the new Diesels! you might wanna make a Hybrid form as well (now THERE would be a cheap excuse to make a BttF variant)
Limey: our engines ain't as much of a PoS any more.
-
John DeLorean was the Chief Engineer at Pontiac which is a GM company..he was never with Ford, he worked for Chrysler, then Packard and finally Pontiac.. soo yes a GM motor in this car would be decent..maybe a smaller V8 like the LS4 or maybe go all out with a S/C LS2....make the sucker all wheel drive too LOL :)
-
Just don't forget the flux capacitor! :P
or the hover conversion....
looks pretty slick.
like an awesome bastard child of a ferrari and a lambo :funny
-
Bah, no ancient pushrod POS motors for this, it needs proper sportscar motor and not a truck engine.. :nono:
-
Funny King Class mentions Ford. I do recall when I was little the factory where the Deloreans used to be built was branded Ford. The site has long closed its doors but still stands next to the M1 on the outskirts of Belfast
-
Wow!! That looks great!!!
And uhm; correct, I mean, right hand drive, please. :p
-
RHD is ONLY correct for brits, aussies, and Japanese (rest of you righties I missed, chime in). get over it.
um, you might wanna redo the Tails, wiley...i got a distinct "Lightning McQueen" vibe out of em.
-

I don't know what you mean.
-
ever heard of kids movie "Cars"?
-
um, you might wanna redo the Tails, wiley...i got a distinct "Lightning McQueen" vibe out of em.
I don't really see it. Seems more like a Ford Mustang actually.

Funny but without reading, I noticed resemblence to Murcielago ;) looking great there, one thing is missing from th old DMC tho ... the side rear windows.

You are right, I'll add those to the design.
-
Preliminary sketches are finished, and now the 3D construction should begin. :D I drew a few variations of the Delorean car, making it look more curvy or sporty. I even attempted to redesign the DMC logo, but I felt I should keep it the same.
http://s227.photobucket.com/albums/dd223/WileyCoyote1701/Meshes/2012%20Delorean%20Concept/
-
Again, I'm definitely looking forward to seeing this develop. The DMC-12 is my absolute favorite car, thanks in great part to the Back to the Future movies. And I'm glad you kept the DMC logo as is.
-
Car schematics are done.
http://i227.photobucket.com/albums/dd223/WileyCoyote1701/Meshes/2012%20Delorean%20Concept/wip_2conceptDelorean_schematics.jpg
-
Sweet ! especiallyy love the front :)
-
Dude! You should send that to the current DeLorean Motor Company. That would be an awesome update to the design.
-
Thanks guys!
-
Probably a silly question, but when you get to textures for the model, are you going to be going with a more modern "plastic" painted silver finish or the stainless steel finish?
-
stainless steel FTW ! one of the coolest things in DMC-12 :)
-
I'll attempt to recreate the stainless steel finish.
-
Well Wiley, look at it this way. It'll be easier to get the right reflections in an actual render, unlike trying to use a game engine.
-
That's beautiful man. Something like that might just make Doc Brown come out of retirement! :P
-
The exterior of the car is mostly done. I still have to add the door handles/key holes, windshield wipers, and tail exhaust. The headlight and tail light details will be added later when I start texturing and they will be clear. Enjoy. :D
http://s227.photobucket.com/albums/dd223/WileyCoyote1701/Meshes/2012%20Delorean%20Concept/?action=view¤t=wip4_Exterior-almost-completed.jpg
-
Niiiiiiiice. Geez, now I'm gonna want this as a small toy. :P
-
That's pretty awesome, Wiley. It's got every single curve that a De Lorean should have and then some. I'm not sure if you're going to revise anything at this point, but if so, there's only one thing I'd recommend you touch up a bit more. That would be the spokes on the wheel. They don't look much different from the old version. I'm not saying that's a bad thing, but perhaps you could throw the modernization on to that as well.
-
And knowing American regulations, it will need side repeaters too.. But that can be added afterwards. Keep the wheels as they are, they'd be pain in the ass to clean, but for pete's sake, give it 5 lugnut config to give it some more range regarding aftermarket wheels. Nobody uses 4xXXX pattern anymore.. :funny
-
Li. they're not "repeaters"...they're always lit (and occasionally, don't even blink) and, yes, there are still 4 luggers around...on the Korean cars.
thing is, what's a modern car doing with keyholes in this day and age?
-
Keyholes exist because the keyfob batteries don't last forever and you need a method for opening the locks when it gives up the ghost. Also, occasionally keyfobs glitch and lose the code or frequency of that said car in which case remote features wouldn't work.
Permission to feel yourself silly granted. ;)
-
Thanks for the comments, that's why you guys are here.
-
I wouldn't mind a slight update to the hubcaps as long as it's still familiar.
And yes, keep the keyholes.
"Repeaters"?
-
he probably means blinkers/turn signals.
You could probably swing just having a key hole on the drivers door, most modern cars don't have them on both sides anyway.
If you're going for a supercar vibe though, I'd go with a push-button starter.
-
I thought "repeaters" were the little side lights, similar to what a semi has. The original Delorean featured them.
-I've added the side "repeater lights"
-I've been playing around with a new hubcap design (I'll see if I can sketch up a few new ideas)
-Added the door handle
-Added rear car details
-Doors are now separated from model
-"Cleared out" the inside and included a rough interior with dashboard
If you guys have any ideas for possible wheel/hubcaps, feel free to post links to them. Enjoy! :D

For fun, I hope we'll get to see a 2012 Delorean "Time Machine" Concept, evolve off of this one.
The Delorean is far from being the prettiest car, but it's certainly one of most iconic, primarily due to being the centerpiece of Back to the Future. And your 2012 concept, makes an "Edsel" of a car, look super cool :)
-
This car rocks Wiley, how about Ferrari F40 style rims ? they arepretty close to those you already have
(http://www.imagewheels.co.uk/wheels/large%20cast/f40.jpg)
just a thought ;)
-
Keep the tyres and rims around the size you have now, that ensures more ride comfort than the current trend of 20"+ rims and anorectic rubberbands for tyres, and please, stick to 5-spoke rims, as they're at least one practical feature in this car as they'd be easy to clean. :D .. And I think since this will probably be a premium car, give the bumpers the parking radar sensors and reversing camera in the back.. And I'd say that Brembo Brakes would be a must for performance car. Keep up the good work!
-
i actually agree with that. dub rims are getting annoying, just like the NY Yankees in baseball...BORING.
-
Honestly, the five spoke rims are, IMO, boring. That's what I liked about the DeLorean's rims, they gave it a uniqueness. I know I'm probably going to be in the minority here.
-
What I currently modeled for the rims are temporary.
I starting to think of a hybrid of the 5 and/or 6 spoke rims and the Delorean's original rims. If I do the time machine version, they also have to look cool when they glow.
I'll come up with something later today.

;)
-
That looks freaky. I'll see that that looks like on the car.
-
Well, good luck Wiley. It's a shame that this won't be a real car.
On the other hand, if it was, then Universal might get it into their heads to remake Back to the Future.
-
Slight update. I've begun work on the dashboard and included rough-versions of seats.
http://i227.photobucket.com/albums/dd223/WileyCoyote1701/Meshes/2012%20Delorean%20Concept/wip5_1_added-dashboard-and-seats.jpg?t=1329972724
-
That looks like a pretty good compromise with the wheels.
-
Looks good.
You going to have an Aston Martin style pop up GPS screen in the indent on top of the dash?
-

I was thinking of something like this:
http://www.automotiveaddicts.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/2010-shelby-gt500-mustang-dash.jpg
-
That is cool. Could have that screen and a projector for a HUD on the Windscreen (windshield)?
-

But, but... Where do you put the Time Circuits and keypad? xD
Just kidding... that dashboard really looks super cool and high tech. Would go with the "futuristic" notion of the original Delorean (remember, when seen in the 50s, it was thought to be a spaceship) :P
-

That would probably be an app for the GPS/computer system. It might have voice command.

The futuristic stuff such as HUDs on the windshield would be cool for the time machine version. This version is more realistic to an actual car.

Compared to technology now from the 80s, if I were to re-imagine the time machine, some elements of the BTTF Delorean would be unchanged, but the coils and interior stuff would be drastically changed. It wouldn't be right if I were to slap the old time machine stuff on a new car.
-

Time Travel. There's an app for that.
-
Slight update. There are a few things left to model in, and textures will be coming soon.
http://i227.photobucket.com/albums/dd223/WileyCoyote1701/Meshes/2012%20Delorean%20Concept/wip6_interior-nearly-done.jpg
-
Definitely looks awesome.
-
Is the font on the rear final or are you going to revisit it? If you are, I'd suggest something with thinner strokes.
-
Not sure the level of detail your go for in the cabin but are there going to be handbrake and seat belts?
Also will there be a right hand drive version for those of us that drive on the correct side of the road ;) :P
-
Looks incredible. Nice one.
-

:yeahthat: :hurr:
-
pfff :P correct side :funny ya right :uberlol:
-
It is, actually.
Stems back from when people used to ride horses to get around. They'd go down the left side of the track so that if they had the need to draw swords it'd be on the right side, rather than having to reach across to strike their foe. (Most people being right handed and all.)
-
"correct side" is a British thing, started by the guys that host Top Gear (who will actually be doing something on the US version tonight that comes right out of the british playbook, for once).
and I hear the reason that us Yanks switched sides? Some moron at the Conestoga factory put the parking brake on the left, instead :P
-
Not sure the level of detail your go for in the cabin but are there going to be handbrake and seat belts?
I'll still have yet to add those. I'll move the gear shift to accommodate the handbrake. I also have a few different font ideas for the rear bumper.
I'm quickly finding out that the interior has more smaller intricate details.
-
Here are some initial optional font ideas for the rear bumper.

-
I'd go with Option A to be honest.
-
I would pick A either but C looks pretty neat too ;)
-
I vote for A.
-
A is not bad but I prefer the cleaner C.
-
...and to be honest C fits overall design like a glove
-
A. It's more of a nod to the original.
-
I vote for A.
-
eww...NONE of the above
A is a bit too thick. c'mon, most people already think american cars are overweaght bloated fuel hogs. a wordmark that looks like it needs Lipo probably won't help. think it down, mabey?
B looks too much like 70's italian
C makes it look like the poor thing was bought by Chrysler!
-
C makes it look like the poor thing was bought by Chrysler!
Well, John DeLorean did work for Chrysler for a short time.
-
Well, John DeLorean did work for Chrysler for a short time.
So THAT'S where he got his drug problem.. :funny
-
I'd say A is the best out of the three. The font in option C makes the car look like it's been terminated XD
-
If the whole thing was shrunk but kept in the style of B it'd be perfect.
-
If the whole thing was shrunk but kept in the style of B it'd be perfect.
I can see where you are going with this...I'll find some more appropriate fonts.
-
If you change the font on the back, then you might as well lose the DMC logo. Otherwise, it's inconsistent.
-

After looking at other possible fonts, you make a good point. Though most elements of the car have been altered, I'll keep the car logos the same as a nod to the original car.
-
New update. I learned how to make metal and glass textures/materials. I'm really happy how the car is looking! :D

It really is a shame that that car isn't going to be real. That is gorgeous.
-
I've fixed some areas of the mesh and smoothed out some sharp lines. More coming this week--- Spring Break!

Shekshy!!!

Wow!

Shiny :)
-
The car is about finished. :dance The interior has been detailed, the tires have tread, and seatbelts have been added.

Slick interior work there. BTW...is that a barcode license plate? :funny
-
BTW...is that a barcode license plate?
Yep.
-
Looking good.
No air bags?
-
No flux capacitor?
-
No gas pedal? Brake Pedal? Clutch pedal?
Will it be able to make 88mph?
-
No gas pedal? Brake Pedal? Clutch pedal?
Thanks for noticing that! I'll make the additions.
Will it be able to make 88mph?
More than that (since the original car can only go about 85). On the speedometer, I modeled 160 mph being the highest speed.
-
Actually Wiley, the top speed of the DMC-12 was more like 130mp/h. The only reason the speedometer reads a max of 85(except for the Back to the Future DeLorean) was because of laws at the time. For some reason, someone thought that showing a lower max speed on the speedometer would mean less people would speed. :roll  :hithead:
-
Rather than people not knowing how fast they were actually going? Smart.
-
The video is up!
-
Hmmm it is a good car Wiley but the video didn't make me want to go out and buy one if I could.
I would have had close ups of various parts of the car intercut with a camera in close up travelling along it's length from back to front. I would use music that builds up to a dramatic climax and at that point reveal the entire car.
Or if all else fails just play the Back to The Future theme over shots of the car :funny
Joking aside, she is a real beauty Wiley
-
Lol, he DID play Back to the Future music over shots of the car.
I definitely like the choice of music you used there Wiley. I'd buy it if I could. :D
-
My bad! Apologies Wiley
I really must stop watching TV while on the computer
-
I definitely like the choice of music you used there Wiley. I'd buy it if I could.
Thanks guys!
-
I hope you get an A+ for this project Wiley. It is seriously fantastic work.
