I am using a pretty old computer...it runs new mods but it kinda chugs and I have to not use some features so it runs a bit better.

I am running a 1.4 Ghz athlon, 1 gig of ram and using a radeon 9550 256 mb graphics card.

I can do a bit of upgrading however but I need to put cost above all else in this case.

Any links to motherboards/CPU combos and ram would probably be a start.

I would also be willing to get a graphics card but I already have a idea on that.

any help would be great

Best for BC?
Single Core, 32 bits, 3GHz, 2 gigs of ram, and some big expensive graphics card, maybe even in SLI.

But for most other new games, use a dual core, nearly no game ATM can use more than 2 cores.

I'm moving this to BC General, I think it's more at it's place there.

any particular models come to mind?

I need to keep cost at the forefront in this endeavor but still be able to upgrade later on to something better.

I only really use my PC for playing Dawn of war, Empires at war and BC

I'm not that into computers.

I'd look for some Dual Core thing, Intel cut the prices on those recently.

I'd definitely go for a dual core machine these days. BC might not be able to make use of two separate cores, but don't forget you can have your windows and antivirus stuff on one core, and have the other completely free for BC.

It makes more of a difference than you might imagine.

core 2 duo E6600, 7950gtx, 2 gigs corsair performance ram. and the P-5b-e ASUS motherboard, and a 200gig SATA2 HD. that is what i use and BC runs flawlessly.

Athlon X2 4400+ w/ 2Gigs RAM and an ATI Radeon X1650 512mb pci/e graphics card. The whole rig is about a year old now, but BC runs just fine, even when i start to turn up the AA and AF.

Intel Pentium D 2x 2.6 Ghz, ATI x550 PCI-E, 1 gb DDR2 ram, P5vd2-x ASUS motherboard, WD 160 gb HDD + Samsung 40 gb HDD, BC runs go... could be better, I think it's only 1 gig ram foult, everything runs perfectly even with AA and AF set to MAX until I fire pulse weapons and they impact on shield producing explosions then the game becomes laggy for few secs also lag begins when ship explodes or is venting plasma :x

Intel Core2Extreme X6700 2.93mhz over clocked to 3.43mhz (runs perfectly stable no matter what I throw at it), dual Geforce 8800GTX GCards in SLI, 2 Seagate 750mb HD's in RAID 0 for a total of 1.5tb., 4gb Corsair PC8888 RAM, 850w dual rail PS.... 32 inch 5ns LCD

I figured what the hell, since we're all talking about our rigs, I might as well put in my 2 cents.

Took me a while to save my pennies in order to build this system...

BC runs pretty good.

I think you have to aim for something other than BC. Anything newer than 4 years will do fine for BC.

I just want to be able to run BC maxed out without the slowdowns I am experiencing now.

It would also be nice to play Warhammer 40k dawn of war without problems either.

Then I suggest you aim for that game instead of BC, unless it's older.

It is a newer but scales down quite a bit so it can run on low end systems.

I built my current rig years ago and it seems as though it is now cheaper just to buy a new one...but I am not sure I am looking in the right places.

Is newegg still a good source or is there cheaper?

Newegg is still a very good source... but depending on where you live if there are any PC parts stores around, you sometimes get a better deal on parts especially if there are sales.

I live in Silican Valley and I'm very lucky as to how many resources I have.

None of the rigs you guys have mentioned are exactly cash concious. For starters anything Intel will instantly set you back another 100 bucks.

1 notable tip is don't worry about RAM speed. Buying slower ram will not make any great differnence in performance at all and will save you maybe 50 bucks.

I upgraded in august to AMD Athlon X2 6000 socket AM2, 4gb DDR2, Geforce 8800 Ultra, so I am using XP 64bit and Vista Ulitmate 64bit

this runs games brilliantly. Only problem is bc crashes lol

If you want the best value for your money, you should probably build your own.
However, if you don't possess the technical savvy to build your own, then I'd suggest a custom built home entertainment model from ABS.
