Possible Constellation-Class Pack v2
« on: September 27, 2007, 07:09:39 PM »
I would like to help with this ship pack.  Dr_McCoy1701A did an excellent job with this ship, and making it popular.  To my knowledge, he was going to make a version 2, which included rescaling the ships, and fixing nacelle grille textures.  Note- I have no clue if Dr_McCoy is working on this pack.  If he is not, I can help, less stuff for you to do.

To start off- I am starting with the single ship-the USS Stargazer.  I have rescaled the ship to be a little bit bigger than ZZ's Constitution Refit.  I am using the scale based off of Ex Astris Scientia.  Since the scale of the ship was reduced, the weapons in-game were firing from an invisible point in space; this was the same problem with the blinkers.  I have fixed the weapon placing and I am now beginning the blinkers.  Almost forgot, I will also add speculars.

Blinkers are done!  Since the hardpoint is finished for this ship, I'll start on the rest.  Enjoy. 8)

It looks good.. but unfortunately..the Constellation is somewhat smaller than the Constitution Class... The Connie is 289 metres while the Constellation is around 231-240 metres. If you check the warp engines since they are significantly shorter than the Constitution's and scale them appropriately, along with the bridge you'll see that the Constellation class is shorter in overall length than the Constitution Class

Oh, well.  At least I scaled down the model to "around the size" of the Constitution Refit.  On Ex Astris Scientia, the Enterprise-A was 305m, and the Constellation-class was 310m- I followed this scale.  I don't want this thread to become a ship-scaling problem thread.  In addition, we never really got to see both of these ships side by side.

When the real people who were filming the models for the episodes, we as fans found out loads of ship-scaling inaccuracies.  These ships were edited onto film and sized down to a general "close enough" size.

Glad you like it.

a mistake i made was using the 289 as the refit when thats the length of the original configuration connie...my mistake. It is indeed 305 which makes the constellation even smaller. But you're right..we won't make this a thread about ship scaling..that can all be done in beta testing. Kudos to you for doing another excellent job, as you did with the Excelsior which I downloaded. it is fantastic as well.

Sounds really good to Me :) tho I planned to make v.2 only when someone will be able to edit model and add torpedo lauchers on the dorsal and ventral pylons and make better (dunno how to name it) bulbs on the ventral saucer cuz they look really bad, and since this model is old and rather low poly someone could add some other cool details stuff, then this ship will be awesome material for  v.2 pack

Forgot something, recently I've fixed nacelles so they lit from both sides but still there are some areas of the ship that looks really plain. some parts should stick out a little from hull but they're not... I tried to use extrude option in milkshape but effects were at least ugly, so these parts have to be modelled in...

here are pics on what should be changed :

Sorry that I couldn't model anything(I don't have the programs to do so).  But I did the next best thing- changing the textures to give the appearance of a raised panel.  Maybe this should be pack v1.5? :)

Any plans on fixing these few texture problems? They are on all the ships in the pack.

The first pic shows jaggy textures on the starfleet logo. Theres also half a window missing. The second pic shows a fisible 'box' where the reg lights are on the saucer section.

Can't wait for 2014 to start.

It'd be best if someone was up to the task to build a new Constellation mesh, all the current ones have bad textures and bad model details...add insult to injury, these meshes are at least 3-5 years old...

very good idea, i might try to do that, i just got the program Animation Master, so i don't have to deal with milkshape. i am "upgrading" to a linux based computer though shortly, once i get a 4.0. so i think i would start on a project like that

Althought raised textures you did Wiley we still need aft launchers to be modelled in cuz now they're not in canon positions.

Thanks for pointing it out, will be fixed

I get working on the window, alpha channels, jaggy enblems, etc.  The jagged emblem, which includes the impulse dome area, are on the same 512x512 texture, I'll upgrade that to 1024x1024.

So far, the fixed textures look nice!  To whomever is thinking about editing the model, I can send you the scaled-down model.  Here's a pic:

Hey WC, I'm going to take a crack at editing the constellation class model.  Can you send your version of the ship.

I plan to up the poly count somewhat, like smoothing out the bridge dome, top and bottom.  Also those 2 blue thingies by the impulse engines, lol...I forgot what they're called.

Anyhoo...I'm also going to try to dent in those cargo bays for a better 3d look and all the rest of those bumpy looking things.  I can also re-map some of the parts like the half-window.

If you can send it, I'd appreciate it. :D
