I have a few rubbish explanations for that :D :

1) The writers didn't think of it.
2) How would they get Kirk killed? (A stupid move. But if he lived, what would they do with him? Send him to the old peoples home?)
3) They forgot this was Star Trek
"To live on as we have is to leave behind joy, and love, and companionship, because we know it to be transitory, of the moment. We know it will turn to ash. Only those whose lives are brief can imagine that love is eternal. You should embrace that remarkable illusion. It may be the greatest gift your race has ever received."

In the danger of turning this into a Generations convo,
I don't see why kirk had to be in it in the first place,

Aside from Kirk dying, I liked Generations.
Stop raging on it. At least it wasn't as bad as Nemesis.

Anyway, maybe Nero is just trying to 'kill 2 warbirds with one stone' (see what I did there  :D). Get back at Vulcans for nuking Romulus and disband the Federation while they are still in the early stages of space travel so that they arn't a bother to Romulus in the future. Remember the Dominion War? The Federation basically lied to the Romulans to get them to become allies of the Federation. Nero could probably see himself as some kind of 'Saint' since he's going back in time to basically stop Romulans getting into various scuffles because of the Federation.

Okay, next damn movie after ST09 had better be based around DS9, lol.

Plus, alternate timeline. So um yeah. :D
Can't wait for 2014 to start.

Besides which...who's to say Romulus isn't destroyed in STO?  If you've been keeping up with their projected history, there are technically 2 Romulan Empires.  Of course, STO says that the Klingons go to war against the Federation...under MARTOK.  I call bull.  STO is gonna be crap, especially when they decide to "hot rod" a Sovvie to be their flagship and apparently the Klingons dug up a 22nd century ship as their new primary ship.  Sorry, STO gets two big thumbs down as far as story.

And remember guys, both Nero and Soran have the Khan-like madness going against what should be logic here.  But Nero lost his home, his family, and probably a good deal of his friends.

As for his vendetta, it likely starts with Vulcan because of Spock's involvement.  Whether it's Spock's action or inaction, or perhaps Vulcan/Starfleet's lack of action, that results in Romulus's destruction, either way Nero would have a clear reason to go after Spock's home.  I think someone on TrekMovie.com put it best though: "Romulus goes BOOM?!? Talk about taking things personally - this guy makes Soran look like a Red Cross worker."

Okay, next damn movie
do you honestly think there will ever be another trek movie ever again?
i have a strong suspicion that this monstrosity of a disappointment of a movie will most definitely kill whatever life Trek had left in it...
i really feel there will never be another movie after this one...
unless they have another sell-out idea...

as do i...
then again, it would prolly be a stupid alternate-timeline-parallel-universe crap since that is the most easiest to write around...

seems to me like the producers shoulda spent some time goin through bcfiles and finding FUTURE ships and ideas so they could make something NEW and not messing with the old.

and the enterprise in this one looks lame... really lame.. but thats my opinion

I highly doubt Romulus is destroyed by the Vulcans.

Has everyone forgotton they are part of the Federation and a unified Government? Also I doubt Vulcan has the ships or technology required to do it. But the key points are they never would and would never be allowed!

I hate how the trailers seem to make me hate the movie one time but another time how they make me want to love the movie.

Screw that trailer. Gimmie the soundtrack.

I will not be able to sit through this hash at the movie theatre.

On a modding note:
Wiley, you've got some re-texturing to do for your Trek XI Enterprise, lol.
Can't wait for 2014 to start.

Billz, you are right. The soundtrack with that trailer was amazing. Music makes a good film, one example I always use is the live action Transformers film and it looks like Star Trek is taking there lead.

As for the trailer, I've watched it over and over again for the last hour. This is how Star Trek films should have been in the past, big, sweeping, with an epic feel to them.

When I saw that new trailer to be honest I didn't instantly think Star Trek, space, technobable, you know all the things that have probably put people off seeing Star Trek movies in the past.

Also don't get me started on the Enterprise! I'm in love all over again. She looks amazing and even the Kelvin is starting to grow on me!

Maybe in this reality the Federation and Starfleet is inspired by an ancient entertainment show set in space and followed the intrepid voyages of certain starships and its crews.

I find it strange that Kirk takes command, Has the whole command chain gone out the window?
Kirk was newly out of the Academy, and i think even was still a cadet, whats a cadet doing taking command when there are actual Officers on board
(Spock, Bones, Sulu)

Not according to the Countdown comics...

A massive supernova within the Romulan Empire wipes out the planet along with Nero's (the movie's villain) pregnant wife.  Beforehand, Spock and Nero teamed up to find a solution, but they were stonewalled by the Vulcans (who possessed the technology to stop the supernova) despite help from Captain Data of the Enterprise and Federation Ambassador Picard.  Mind you, the miniseries still has two more issues to go, but it seems likely that Nero blames Spock, the Vulcans, and the Federation for what happened and uses time travel to get his revenge in the past.
Writer, Star Trek: Yorktown - A saga of the 23rd Century

Coming soon, I hope

Also, it's been stated that at one point Pike makes Kirk temporary 1st officer, so with Spock supposedly incapacitated and Pike missing/dead/whatever, Kirk is technically the first with authority.

Also, the official site is updated with MUSIC!  PRETTY MUSIC!! :D

And what planet is that which gets turned inot a pancake? Looks suspiciously like Vulcan...

Considering that Nero is also attacking Earth, its damn near impossible to say that its not Vulcan.

Oh, and that little ship that we see crahsing into the Narada...you all know that thats the old Spock right? Right?

...

Right?

Not a happy ending this movie will have(just like BSG in a way).
All hail the messiah!

Well we all know that's not canon and in no way would happen in the Star Trek universe. If the Romulans asked for help then the Federation would have provided it despite reservations by members, anyone remember Star Trek 6?
