Did you guys notice Admiral Komack at Kirks hearing?

I'm surprised it isn't mentioned on Memory-Alpha's Page for it.

The soundtrack was awesome.

On the note of sequel ideas, since the Narada had Borg technology, isn't it possible that some of the remains that got sucked into the black hole survived and still remain functional?  What if the Borg reclaimed the debris?  And what if they tracked it back to the Federation?

Where I'm going is...
Kirk versus the Borg? :D

Comic= non-canon. The writers said so.

Yes but the writers also plastered 'Official Movie Prequel' all over the back, which makes it an official release, which makes it canon.

No, that makes it an official release by the people behind the movie, not necessarily canon.

  • Hello, Jerry.
Personally, I tend to keep things simple regarding canon/non-canon; anything seen on the screen is canon. Anything that wasn't, isn't. I don't care how "official" the publication with the extra material is, it wasn't on screen, meaning they might change/ignore it completely when making sequels/prequels.
It really is quite simple.. if it wasn't seen on screen, it's not canon.

I think they should do something that explains the Borg tech onscreen though, because really, even in the 24th century, Romulan ships aren't that big...though, the Borg thing really kinda shone through with all the green glows all inside the thing.

Huh, thought I posted that, well here it is again:

http://www.ryanchurch.com/images/startrek1/ENTERPRISEexteriorBEAUTY1.jpg

Someone needs to do that version of the ship.

I was listening to the GateWorld Pod Cast (They did a Mini one one the new movie)

And they mentioned when Spock, Kirk and Pike are re-materializing on the enterprise (After Spock sets the Jellyfish on a collision course), for a couple of seconds the first 3-4 beats of the Original theme are played.

Why do people keep saying the Naranda had Borg parts?  I watched the movie, and not once was anything "Borg" mentioned!  Was this a comic only thing (something I had no idea about before seeing the movie, way to promote it!) :(

The interior design to me reminded me of a Borg ship....
Canon is what people argue exists on ships that don't exist.

Nevermind.. just read the comics. :)  They would have been a better movie on their own than this one was :)

Finally got to watch the movie.

My only complaint? The aliens. Except for Rachel Nichols, because DAMN. But most of the aliens we saw in the movies looked like something out of Star Wars (at least my father thought so). A lot of them were humans with warped faces. I mean, couldn't they have shown Denobulans, Rigellians, Tellarites, or something? But that's like three seconds of the movie. The little guy with Scotty was cute.

Visual FX: Ossum. I loved the little details. The new warp effect is perfect, as it illustrates that space is warping around the ship, not the ship moving at FTL velocities. The detail when engaging warp is epic as the deflector actually modifies itself to account for the new speeds (it seriously actually changes form) and the impulse engines disengage right before warp. Seeing phaser turrets in action was really neat.

The viewscreen: Actually has a frigging purpose now! I mean, it displays data for the first time...since EVER.

Phasers: I love how the hand phasers cycle after each shot. Much more satisfying than the remote controls with the lame recoilless laser beams.

Transporter: I thought the effect was a little overdone. That same effect with smaller discharges would have been better. It does look the nicest out of all the beams at it kind of illustrates how the process works.

Humor: Spot on, although a little was overdone. But it fit in well with the jovial nature of the Original Series.

Uniforms: Amazing. I loved the Admiral's uniform that Pike was sporting at the end of the movie...exact same style Kirk would wear in TMP.

Rachel Nichols: Damn!

Character performances: My dad and I really liked Kirk. Spock was fairly decent. Karl Urban nailed McCoy perfectly, if you didn't notice. Uhura was ok. Sulu was very good. Scotty was fairly good (as good as it gets). Chekhov? Kind of meh but they really devoted like no time to the character. Pike was a good figure. Nero was nice although that "Hi Christopher, I'm Nero" line I kinda thought out of place with the character. I mean, it sounded more like answering the telephone than demanding surrender.

All in all I give the movie a 9/10. Which aside from WoK is the best movie in the Trek series. It's definitely the most favorably reviewed movie of the year so far (which I doubt will be surpassed). It's a shame that Potter is going to murder it in sales. Everyone I know who's seen it (most of which non-Trekkie) very much enjoyed it, even those who had to be dragged to the theater to watch a sci-fi movie.

And God I love Rachel Nichols.

exactly...  it is getting tiresome to hear "but the comics explain that perfectly!" time and time again...
we shouldnt have to have read the damn comics to understand the finer points of this movie and have things make sense...  terrible on this film's writers behalf, IMO...
Nevermind.. just read the comics. :)
apparently now we all have to, that havent yet...
They would have been a better movie on their own than this one was :)
somehow, i think that would prolly be correct...

You should look them up Jimmy,    quickly reading them made me feel like I was back in "Trek" universe and watching the movie only made me sad for the future of my favorite franchise.  The comics would have made a perfect post nemesis flick... what could have been. :(

Barihawk, I do hate to say it, but I doubt Rachel Nichols is gonna reappear.  Her poor character was assigned to the Farragut, which was part of that fleet that the Narada annihilated.

Also, when listening to the cadet assignments again, one poor cadet got assigned to Regula One.  That'd kinda suck.  Fleet-wide red alert and you get stuck to a space station in the middle of frickin nowhere.

Well, there a large section of the Mayflower's saucer left, I'm sure there could be at least a few members locked in their quarters. Perhaps the Farragut has same sections the same way.
I really hope so, I do love Rachel Nichols.

Actual data to boot, not the "tactical mode" of The Motion Picture.

Personally, I loved the phaser cannon turrets the Enterprise carried.  That was about twelve flavors of frickin' sweet.

All Trek novels are official releases, sanctiones by CBS consumer products very own Paula Block. doesn't make'em canon, tho.

I think they should do something that explains the Borg tech onscreen though, because really, even in the 24th century, Romulan ships aren't that big...though, the Borg thing really kinda shone through with all the green glows all inside the thing.

To be hones,t if you didn't know, would it have mattered? I mean seriously, Big honkin' ship from the future - you don't need to know more to understand the movie.

Remember folks: Movies should have internal consistency with itself. Period. If you want everything explained, two-hours are not long enough for that, plus it'd be fanwank.

Amen to that.  Heck, I used the prequel comics to make that point...

on the flipside, to leave out such obvious important things that the storyline requires for alot the movie to make sense is poor quality writing...
there are too many things "answered/explained in the comics!" and thats just ridiculous...
