Is there really any point in continuing this thread, or further conversation? I have to agree with Jimmy that, irregardless of how you feel about the movie, there seems to be a lot of nit-picking and not a lot of open discussion. We just go round and round arguing and bickering. Perhaps it's time for a lock down.

  • Hello, Jerry.
Perhaps it's time for a lock down.

Why don't we let the admins do their jobs? They're quite good at it, so let them decide when to lock something down.. :)
DT, I wasn't attacking the fact that Jar Jar Abrams made this movie for a wider audience. I'm merely stating that when you do a clean reboot and don't try to cling to something that's 50 years old in continuity, your hands are more open and you can write a plot that makes much more sense and is devoid of silly plot devices forcing some things to happen that must happen. I'm finding the need by some to rationalize the enormous plotholes this thing has hilarious, inventing explanations or going to comic books or ripping parts of interviews together just so it makes sense. If it takes so much effort.. :)
Anyway, ultimately if you go the way of the clean reboot and make a really awesome movie, I think you get a new franchise that can stand on it's own just as well, if not better. Besides you said it yourself, people will always whine. Personally I'm amazed at how quick are some supposed trek "fans" to bash the old trek as "old, washed up and stale". Before you do that you'd do well to remember that trek is 50 years old. I'd like to see how ANY sci fi franchise fares after so much time has passed - and the new Jar Jar trek has yet to pass the test of time.
Just because it was so old was the best reason to leave it alone and make a clean reboot. Like I said, that's just me. I fail to realize why would this be insulting to anyone for them to pick the post apart, or request a topic lock. This movie evokes way too much emotions in some. It's just a movie... (and not a very good one at that ;) <- time for nerd rage. Go for it.)

kirk mentioned how felt to me in a PM yesterday, and i suggested to him that he post his feelings about the thread in the thread itself...  (especially since i have said the same exact thing at least a few times now...)
just an FYI...

as far as this thread, we'll give it a short time longer to see if anything new or interesting can keep this thread going; but frankly i too am exhausted, bored, and growing tired of back and forth rhetoric, debates, nitpicks, arguments, etc...  this thread seems to becoming exhausted and dragged out...
if thats all thats left to discuss about this topic, then i will retire this thread very soon...

Canon is what people argue exists on ships that don't exist.

Hey look, a discussion on the XI movie!!!! *yawn*. I'm with Kirk and Jimmy, regardless of our views of the movie, it's been discussed... to death. But hey, that's just my opinion.
Build a game and people will be happy for a few years. Build a community... Well, look at BC. :D

It's been nearly 2 months since the movie was released, and within that time there's been a lot of bickering back and forth from both those who liked the movie, and those who despised it. As is the general consensus, this thread has been done to death :P

maybe we should put up a new poll about the thread being locked lol j/k :P

i would rather not lock it in all honesty, it should be left open to any possible further discussion in the future - even if we all collectively give the thread a rest for a bit and let it fade down the page a bit...  after all, the DVD upon release will have some thngs to be discussed im assuming...
it's just the tension and debating and post-nitpicking that is becoming a drag and has become moreso the focus of this thread, than the actual open discussions themselves...  :(

I'm trying not to bicker, so hopefully I don't come off that way.  As many of you know, I personally loved the movie.  Even more so though, I'm glad that Star Trek has made its way back into the public conciousness, rather than dying in obscurity(as far as the general public is concerned anyways).  Did the movie have plot holes?  Yes.  Did it have impossibilities?  Yes.  So did The Wrath of Khan.  Do we bash The Wrath of Khan?  No.  This movie shouldn't have been any different, but it is.  Why?  The same reasons Newman suggested.  Most fans, yes even myself, would've been more comfortable with this movie if it had been a BSG-style complete reboot rather than an in-canon alternate universe reboot.  The main thing is that the success might renew interest in a Post-TNG era series or something similar, in addition to the new crew's adventures.

To the Gaila question, she was assigned to the Farragut.  Unless the Farragut was hit last and the crew made it to escape pods, then she probably died.  Sad, but true.  But in line with the fact that women who fall in love with Jim Kirk usually regret it. ;)

Thank yas Farshot, I'm here all night. *bows*

On a more serious note, I have to say I am impressed that Star Trek has hung out in the top 10 films for 8 weekends straight, even with the gigantic opening of Revenge of the Fallen.  This is very surprising, especially for a reboot of a franchise that's over 40 years old.  Good times, good times.

On a far less serious note, Simon Pegg is, crazily enough, predicting Star Trek: Something Something in 18 months.  I doubt it.  It'd be cool, but I doubt it.

Plus...crazy, crazy Karl Urban!

Good God Bones!

The Khan talk just won't go away though this time we get a suggestion in the form of Javier Bardem(that creepy guy from No Country for Old Men).

Quote
At issue: do they create a fresh plot with never-before-seen characters and scenarios or ? because young Kirk and Spock are now part of an alternate timeline where the past has been altered ? do they introduce 2.0 versions of such popular villains as the Klingons or Khan? Orci recognizes each approach has its own merits.

Rebooting familiar elements appeals instantly to fans and attracts the attention of "the media-sphere," as he calls it.

Meaning that if you cast, say, Javier Bardem as the new Khan opposite Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto, you?ve automatically excited fans and attracted the attention of the moviegoing public.

"But on the other hand," he adds, "who doesn?t love an original story?"

Quote
Jordan Hoffman: Okay, so sequel to Star Trek. You haven?t even begun the script, yes?

Roberto Orci: Little vacation in July then we hit the ground running.

Jordan Hoffman: And everyone is giving you their two cents on what they want to see in the movie. Have you ever experienced this, where people have so many opinions on a script you haven?t even written yet?

Alex Kurtzman: That is unique to Star Trek. That?s what is so remarkable out it ? the fans. The fan fiction, the community, the familiarity with the material.

Quote
CS: I?m on a one-man mission to plant the seed now. If you decide to revisit the character of Khan, two words: Javier Bardem.

Kurtzman: Oh my God!

Orci: Did you know we?ve actually mentioned that out loud as a possibility? What a great idea.

Lindelof: Come on. That?s a no-brainer. That would be the most amazing thing ever. Who would even what to see these [new] guys then? That?s the problem. You would just watch them for scenery.

More here. http://trekmovie.com/2009/07/04/more-star-trek-sequel-talk-from-orci-kurtzman-is-there-a-leading-candidate-for-new-khan/

Tbh, I think that's just a placeholder. None of the usual graphics is visible on that box. Cast names, logo etc.

Plus that's the wrong date.  It's November 17th...though I'd prefer the 2nd.

I think it's interesting how the DVD package is going to be used for another Augmented Reality type tour of the Enterprise.  I wonder if it'll be the movie model of the ship instead of the Star Trek DAC model...if not, then I'm definitely grabbing the blu ray, it has a feature on the Ent and Narada with 360 degree views...good for modders. :P
