Actually, I think that the subject of skin shields have been broached several times since Nemesis, just not on this particular BC forum.

OHMYGOSH OHMYGOSH OHMYGOSH!!!!!!!
Okay, I was like... playing around in Max for the hell of it, and I remembered this "smoothing" thing from a while ago I was playing with, right? So I went and used that on the Mithra, thinking that i may as well play around, and then BAM! Before I knew it I was actually making sense of Max's setup and GUI, and started cleaning up my model... in MAX!!!! :D :D :D :D :D!!

This is a SUPREME victory for me! If Lint is around, YOU'D BETTER BE PROUD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So yes! I can now clean up the Mithra on my own! (well, pretty much anyways... there are some areas that're still going to give me some major trouble...

BUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA....HAHAHAHA....HAHA...hahaha...ha... *cough cough*

Anyways, ladies and gentlemen, please enjoy the latest pictures of the battleship Mithra, rendered in Max. If you don't enjoy them... I'll deprive you of cookies. That is all...

End commentary.
-Aeries.

Edit: OH YEAH! I re-built the torpedo turret in front of the deflector, too, though I'm still not sure I like it... I mean, it looks better than it did, but I still don't like it.... Well, since Max doesn't like to "shed light" on the bottom area of my ship, I'll upload a pic from the old app so you can see the new torpedo launcher. Also, just so you know, the launcher was actually originally going to be a new impulse drive manifold for the nacelle pylons before I farted around with it and realised it looked like a torpedo launcher. :P

Ooohhh, nice. One slight suggestion tho: make the transition from the pod strust to the pods more streamlined, like they are a continuation of one another, flow like water ;) Also, the sec hull could use some thickening, looks flimsy like this.

Mmkay, streamline the pod struts and thicken the aft section of the secondary hull... Actually, all things considered, I might just re-build that area, minus the struts, pods, pylons and nacelles... simply because I might be able to do a better, cleaner job if I just re-build it rather than fart around with resizing. Things will change with the Mithra from now on, since I can clean her up like this now, I have very little else to worry about. save for the phasers. *groan*

Anywho, I'm gonna get right on that! Thanks, Andonis! Oh, and thanks for the cookie, Kirk!

Edit: Holy SH*T! I just realized how far this has come from what it once was... if you guys haven't already, take a peak at the Mithra's former varients. Wow... I do love this... she's come so far... In light of this epiphany, I will NOT settle for anything less than absolute quality!!! The Mithra is like an extention of myself... and must be treated as such... with perfectionism...  8)

Hmmmm, that turret looks odd for some reason.  However, the Mithra looks slick now, and I agree with Adonis's suggestions.  Get those done and finish up the weaponry, and I personally think it'll be time to dress up the girl.  I wish you luck in your venture.  Cookie away!!!

Thanks! I'm currently in the process of re-working these things. I know DJ had some suggestions as well, but he hasn't gotten back to me or posted them here, yet. I'd like to see what he's got in mind before finalizing everything. :)

I've got another big, fat update for you guys... though judging form the lack of activity in the past couple weeks, I doubt many people will see this. Lol. :/

Anywho, I must have spent a good 13-14 hours straight on the Mithra yesterday, as I didn't get to bed until 3 in the morning and I slept until 1 this afternoon. I've re-built the entire secondary hull, now featuring a much nicer deflector dish and a better shuttle bay. It's a bit larger than the old one, so hopefully it'll balance out the aft area of the ship so it doesn't look quite as flimsy; if it still does look flimsy, then I'm not sure how to fix it up and widen it without rebuilding that entire section as well... :/ though i guess that wouldn't hurt, huh?

So yeah. In addition to the brand new secondary hull, I've also begun building the phaser strips myself. (Lint knows me too well already... he put off adding the phasers 'cause he knew I'd probably rebuild something significant eventually. Lol.) so there are currently four top and bottom phaser strips, totaling eight so far: four on the saucer, one on each pod and one on the bottom of each nacelle) I'll be adding a few more soon.

After changing the model so much, I've tried to clean it up... it's much better than what it was at first, though there are still quite a few obvious issues that need to be sorted. I think I will re-build the aft section, at least the top portion. Might even put in a whole new bridge module and everything there... that area's starting to look obsolete in comparison to the rest of the model, and I don't think I like the shuttle bays i added... they're not smooth enough.

Oh, and if somebody can help me out with one particular issue I want to tackle before I get to texturing... both DJ and Lint pointed out that the saucer's edge is really choppy, and could use some extra (okay, a great deal more...) polys to smooth it out and make it much more stream lined. I haven't a clue how to tackle this without building a new saucer from scratch, and I think I really need help with that...

Anyways, I can either wallow in my modeling skills' inadequacies, or I can show off what I've spent so much d*mned time on... pics:

Hey, the Mithra is currently one of my favorite WIPs. She is really starting to look good, though what are the UFOs floating off to port in pictures 2 and 3?

Ooohhh, forgot about those. Lol. I made phaser templates for myself... if I needed to make another round of phasers, I just duplicated one of those and... yeah. :P

Just a little something to keep this alive... no pics, but I'll post those when I get back home and do more work with this later tonight...

I've almost completely rebuilt the Mithra, once again. Lol. The entire top portion of the saucer section has been re-built and I even built an entirely new saucer rim, complete with the secondary deflector array and the sensor pallet indentations I've been wanting for like... ever. I have also greatly widened the aft section, so it looks far less flimsy. Additionally, the warp nacelles have been completely rebuilt and the pylons have gotten a much-needed overhaul as well. The weapons pod pylons have been re-built, too, but I think I'm going to get rid of the pods entirely and rebuild them... they just don't "flow like water", as Adonis said. I may, in fact, rebuild the entire engineering hull again once the top hull, pylons and pods are all complete. Reason being that I've come a long way with the top hull, and it's SO much cleaner and smoother than the rest of the ship that it actually makes the rest look terrible. As such, I'm going to rebuild the lower hull and lower saucer, as well... as I actually have some really cool ideas I want to try. With any luck, I'll have the old girl put completely back together by morning, fresh as fresh can be... seems my modeling skills have come FAR further than they once were. *beaming ego moment*

The result so far is that the saucer rim, as has been suggested to me many times by now, is FAR smoother than seen in my last update. In fact, I'm almost willing to say that I could make a good comparison between the Mithra and DJ's Century (Scared the crap out of myself when I saw how much better it looks than before.) The ship is far smoother with far fewer errors than what it once had, and it's easier for me to maintain a level of quality with the cleaner mesh. Despite how much intricate detail has been integrated into the new model, it is, in fact, over 600 polys LESS... sitting at roughly 6.1k. Given a little bit of time, I believe I can even reduce that count to somewhere in the high 5k's. I also believe I can rebuild the phasers FAR better now, having much fewer limitations mesh-wise.

In any event, I intend to shock the living hell out of all of you with the new Mithra. I think you'll all (as I am) be SO MUCH happier with the new model. As I stated, I scared myself when I saw the end result of my 8-hour non-stop "productivity campaign". Lol... and no, I'm not exaggerating about the new model. Unfortunately I have no pics, but I should have some for tomorrow morning. Once the model is complete and I've integrated some armored plating via "beveling" (Lint suggested this method, rather than the extruding I've grown used to) then I think she'll finally be ready for textures... Oh, and the newer, fresher model is SO much cleaner that texturing ought to be a breeze... well, mapping at least.

If anybody has further suggestions, despite my lack of current pictures, please post them ASAP before I get off work and start my big-arse "campaign" again. I love feedback and ideas, so don't be afraid to offer them up if you have them. :)

MANY thanks to all of you.

Sincerely,
~Aeries.

doesn't look like the mithra will be assembled today... tomorrow night, perhaps? Depends on how much she desides to piss me off. Lol. She certainly has done a good job this time around... My gods, the impulse engines on the back of the saucer screw me over every time, i swear... Anyways, as you can see, there is still a crap load of work to be done, but this'll give you a general idea of what's to come. Shouldn't take me long to fix her up, though, once all the hard crud's out of the way...

Anywho, pics as I promised:

Wow... Just Wow
"The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of the darkness. For he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. this new nacelles are awsome, great work there, have a cookie for them!

The only nitpick I have is the bridge. I don't know how big you have planned the mythra should be,
but I think the bridge is far to small.

Anyway great work, can't wait to see more of it :D
