Bridge Comander, Windows Condition Barometer?
« on: September 10, 2009, 06:16:36 PM »
okay, this is decidedly weird and generates a  :wtf

lately, my copy of BC has been severely hitching, jigging across the screen, like an old sprite game with too many onscreen at once.  even in a one on one quickbattle.  even after reinstalling some elements (after having noticed something was missing via consulting cosole reports) it hitched.  it got even worse once I plugged in my Joypad.

then, comes the odd bit.

as I was wrapping up last afternoon, windows started downloading a update for itself.  i finally let it finish and restart this morning (after a 30 minute blackout)  weirdly, BC is now smooth as glass, even with mutiple Projectiles on screen.  not a hitch in sight.  THEN i remembered after the LAST time i had to update windows due to a system restore in order to "repair" BC (not much else would load, either).

now, this has me wondering.  Is BC a Barometer for window's condition?

Edit: i just recieved a similar report from worf359.  Micro$oft just sent out an update that he had to get, too!

Microsoft always sends out updates... that's nothing new... you should always except them.

 :funny

not what I meant, nebs.

i meant that BC was slowed to a hitchy crawl, and after windows updated itself, BC smothed out again.  happened twice so far.  i'm thinking that when BC starts hitching, windows is about to send out an update.

My BC barometer is brilliant. If the screen goes blank, that means my computer has died and wont wanna turn on again.
"To live on as we have is to leave behind joy, and love, and companionship, because we know it to be transitory, of the moment. We know it will turn to ash. Only those whose lives are brief can imagine that love is eternal. You should embrace that remarkable illusion. It may be the greatest gift your race has ever received."

I have a similar story! Whenever BC starts acting up it typically means a strong rain is coming, just like a real barometer! Holy s---!

LOL!!! All jokes not withstanding, with me personally, i noticed that BC starts getting all wacky, while Windows is updating in the backgroind. as it does for me, no doubt it cause of the system resources tied up by the update, i think that was what King was trying to impart, shame on you guys for picking on him, he waz only tryin to bring forth knowlage to the grate unwashed!!

(King you gotta admit that was kinda funny :funny :funny ;)

 :mad

i expect a bunch of wiseacre answers from guys under 25, but I also figure gen Y is actually MATURE ENOUGH not to try the kind of thing I was hearing in 1987, for pete's sake!  you pulled out my "dad" side, dangnabbit.  i feel frigin old enough as it is. :funny

like we were all saying...BC slows down to a crawl about a week or two before windows issues an update.  also, unlike apparently a lot of you, I'm still running XP, here (i saw the "specs" thread, a lot of you have made BC run on Vista...HOW?)

nebs: i set it to a middle of the night update so it doen't interfere.  that doesn't mean it isn't waiting to be reset first thing in the morning.  also, when mum comes over and tries to use this thing, she rearranges everything the way SHE wants it, and I have to do maintenence to get rid of the 6 tons of spyware and crap she ends up giving me :P

hahaha 3 things....

1. I still have XP on my laptop.
2. Just install BC outside the ProgramFiles folder on Vista or disable UAC...
3. Make a limited user account for your mother... that should prevent most things.

Well, what KSC is saying could be true.

Some people out there might be playing BC, it gets sluggish, they e-mail Windows and a week or two later, update.

I heard that windows Vista was a problem, but i replaced my laptop a couple of months ago with an ASUS gaming laptop, and BC had no prolems running on Vista, only i have to switch the video card options everytime i run BC, a minor inconveniance, but other then that it runs great, i do however like Windows XP better than Vista, only because i was used to it i think!!

Only like neb said, install outside the program files and theirs no problem!!
