Halo: Untapped Universe?
« on: August 10, 2010, 06:07:57 PM »
Hey guys, sorry in advance if this sounds like a request thread, but I'm trying my best to not make it seem that way.  I know everyone has their own projects to do and what not.  But I thought I would just toss this idea out there for someone who might be interested.  You may have heard of the Xbox video game series, Halo.  Some of you have probably even played them.  But I would bet that not everyone knows how large the Universe has become, expanding way beyond that of a simple first person shooter.  Ship to Ship combat is something not often seen in the games because they focus on the ground combat but the novels have introduced some very exciting space battles of epic proportions.  If anyone is interested, I would highly recommend the Halo Novels.

Here is where it starts to sound like a request lol.  Halo has a wide range of awesome looking ships, which some have been seen in game, and those which have only been seen in the Novels or comics.  I think they would make for an awesome edition to Bridge Commander, except I do not have the talent necessary to build such a things.  That's why I thought I would post some examples here, in order to peak someones interests.  You never know, someone might be interested in these ship designs after all.

Apologies to the Admins if they think this sounds too much like a request thread, or if you think it doesn't belong in this particular forum.  But I thought I would see what the community thought.  Below are examples of Halo Ships, along with some info...

This is a United Nations Space Command (UNSC) Destroyer, the UNSC Heart of Midlothian to be procise.  This type of ship has been "seen" in several novels before but didn't get an actually drawn design until it was drawn into a Motion Comic based on a short story.  Like all UNSC Ships, she doesn't boast energy weapons or shields like we're used too.  Instead she relies on traditional armored hulls and nuclear missiles.  Their pride and joy is the Magnetic Accelerator Cannon or MAC Gun, which fires a massive slug of metal at 120,000 kilometers per second.  More than capable of ripping another Starship in half.  Other ships in the UNSC which have been shown are Frigates, Cruisers and small Stealth ships called Prowlers.  They would all make for some interesting combat, such as developing a MAC Gun for in game use and missiles similar to Wiley's ID4 Captured Alien Fighter.

The enemy of the UNSC is a massive Alien Covenant which is bent on destroying Humanity for Religious/Political reasons.  Their ships are far more advanced with Plasma weapons and Shields.  They're faster and more maneuverable also.  Their ships range in design as well, having Frigates, Destroyers, Cruisers, etc.  The image above is an example of a Covenant Destroyer.  I absolutely love this design, and like I said, if I could make it I totally would.

Plenty more designs where these two came from.  Not to mention specs on each one, which I could provide for anyone interested.

Once again, sorry if this is just a big waste of time.  I just wanted to share the idea with the rest of the Community and get some opinions.  Start a discussion.

i wouldn't mind some Halo ships in BC, Halo-wiki is a good source for images and info on them

http://halo.wikia.com/

Though maybe this belongs better in BC General

Also I don't think it sounds like a request thread, more like a suggestion thread

Nice choice of designs.  If I had no job and no obligations, they would be on my WIP list for sure.  But I go to school and have to do chores, so they won't be, or not in the near future at least. :idk:

Halo projects have come and gone quite often. Too be honest, there's no real drive to get it done. I know because I've been on a "team" that tried it. I managed to get some guy's Pelican model in game and hp'd, but that's as far as it ever got.

Holy smokes!  That alien ship would make an interesting basis for a 25th Century Klingon design.

kirk is right...  i cant even count the number of times in BC's history that people have asked about Halo ships, and a few times they were actually begun...  however, none of the projects ever came to be...

well there is the Pillar of Autumn mesh that was released on BC files... it's just waiting to be textured and converted.
Canon is what people argue exists on ships that don't exist.

It's a shame no one has attempted any Halo Ships.  I would say it's because it's mostly unknown to the average person.  It's a huge console FPS but how many in the community play it?  The Pillar of Autumn Nebula posted looks pretty good but compared to the Model used in the actual Halo game, she could use a little work.  More work than I know how to do lol.  Below is the Pillar of Autumn (Halcyon-Class) as seen from the original Halo Game.  Below that is a CCS Class Assault Carrier from Halo 3.

It's a huge console FPS
That's the thing. It's an FPS with little ship interaction. Not much to go on for a space sim.

That's what I'm saying though, is that Halo's Universe has expanded greatly from the Games and has introduced some pretty awesome Space Battles via Novels and Comics.  But most people only know the FPS aspect of it so we don't get any Halo Ships for BC.

Although the games have never truly shown Space Combat, this particular scene has always stood out in my mind.  It really makes me wish we had some of these ships to play with on BC:

I've got a bunch of halo related models I've built (Which are complete replica's/truest I can get with the avaliable references). I was on that team with Kirk. The Halcyon got to texture stage and the project lead disappeared soonafter.  :idk: I've got a Longsword and the In Amber Clad frigate sitting around collecting digi-dust with it. There was a bridge half-built too and some other works.

As has been said, there's just not that much a base for it here. That being said, if the topic popped up more than once a year I'd gladly finish them off...

How old are the models?  I mean, you said you based the Frigate off of the In Amber Clad from Halo 2 right?  That ship is really low poly compared to the Frigates seen in Halo 3.  There were also a lot more Frigates seen in Halo 3, with better screen shot opportunities so they would provide better references.  If deadthunder is interested in checking them out, I could provide screenshots of the Halo 3 Frigates so that the model can be looked over and tweaked accordingly.  That is, if he's interested :)

Also, Halo Reach will be released in 33 Days, 812 hours, 48742 minutes :D and then it will provide the best look at the UNSC Frigate as she will be an even higher poly version than Halo 3s.  Although I suppose it doesn't really matter.  The Halo 3 Frigate is pretty detailed as it is and provides good Reference pics right now as opposed to 33 days from now lol.

The thing is there aren't many orthographical views to go on, and I hate knowing a project I'm doing won't be as accurate as I know I could make it. I suppose there is the alternative of using CE to take the desired images... You also have to consider that space combat always seems to be fleet/fighter-oriented in Halo, the H2 models would allow for more people to enjoy larger fights. (As opposed to the Trek-style smaller battles, typically 1-on-1/2-on-1)

In short, I dunno. Perhaps I'll test the waters with the Halcyon and Longsword, and see how it goes.

What really has me concerned is "Bungie's' - Microsoft's , copyrights, on the models - design.

I would LOVE to see Halo ships.
Though much is taken, much abides; and though
We are not now that strength which in old days
 Moved earth and heaven; that which we are, we are;
One equal temper of heroic hearts,
Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.
