Here's a comparison shot I made for scaling.  As you can clearly see, the middle model is a rip from STO.  I try not to rely on rips for reference (I didn't use one for the Exeter) but I nabbed it just to show a little something...

The ripped model was around 10k tri's.  I say "was" because by just messing with the saucer, I was able to remove a good five thousand triangles.  STO models have a different way of smoothing than what we do with BC ones.  STO's meshes all use only one smoothing group.  At areas that need hard edges, like the rim of a Sovereign-like saucer, there are actually entire bunches of minuscule polygons that make it appear sharp.  Without these micro-polies, the entire mesh would look like a blob, but with them the poly count is excessively high for a relatively low quality mesh.

Basically, a rip is nearly useless for BC without heavy modification.  And assuming all these useless polies are removed and the smoothing groups are remade, you come out with a mesh of five thousand triangles or less, definitely on the lower end of current BC standards.

I hope you'll work the same magic you've worked with the saucer to the rest of that ship.  The Excalibur is ugly.  Though, the Vesper is worse.

Also, here's the scaling of the Exeter to Wiley's Connie refit:

Lionus, do you want any changes to Mjolnir hull coloring or shoould I stick to that tealish tint ? or simply make both the same ?

Well.  Uh.  There evidently was a bit of miscommunication regarding my requests, but it looks good so it doesn't really matter.

As for the Mjolnir refit, if you made the hull paneling tealish, perhaps you should make the engines more teal as well.  What am I getting at?  A quantum slipstream equipped escort, sort of like the Vesta class.

Bones & Farshot.

I'll post this here because it will most likely get your attention.

I just downloaded the specular fix for the Exeter you posted on BCFiles. However, I noticed that the size of the specular maps are pretty large... they needn't be. Below is a link to a post that I put in the "FSB Shipyards - Exeter Class"  in the BC Downloads thread. It'll explain it all.

Cheers

I'll leave this to Bones since he handles textures, but that definitely is a good idea.  I remember my FPS dropping considerably when I had more than one Exeter on the screen at any one time, so anything that helps alleviate the stress on systems would be great.

So, correct me if I'm wrong, but the speculars should have:
- No RGB component, just a grayscale
- No alpha component

You could always have more then one download version.  High textures, medium, etc.  Speculars can be however you set them.  But to lessen the size of them, then you can do those.  Brings a (2048x2048) 16mb tga, down to 4mb tga.  But just looks weird when colored ships have grey specs.  All up to yous really.

Correct.

And actually, to address Cords comment. Grayscale specs don't really make the specs "gray" on colored ships it just makes the colors of the ship, for lack of a better way of putting it, a bit "grayer" but still retains some definite color.

I think I deserve a cookie or 2...  :P  :yay:

You?  Have you seen Bones' cookie count?  It's gone up by like thirty since we started working together.  I've only managed to accrue ten or so. :P

Indeed. Farshot and Bones, I may need your talents for a modding team I'm creating for this summer. If that is alright?

Yes, yes, and more yes, it'd be an honor. :D

I'd flood this post with tons of emotes expressing my range of feelings regarding this announcement, but I don't want to look like a 12 year old who just discovered the internet.

Ah, what the heck.

:eek :dance   :yay: (in no particular order)

Sounds like fun  :) count me in Wiley !

oh and Farshot, if you mean miscommunication by escape pod count, I tried multiple configurations and they mostly looked strange, this looked the best but still can make changes ;)

Right now Vendetta is almost ready for beta testing, just need to setup phasers and do the scripting side.

Actually...  here's what I actually meant by my requests. :P

...the saucer area should have the highest concentration of them since that's where the crew lives.  Since there isn't much on the ventral side of the saucer, feel free to throw in a dozen or so on the port and starboard sides.
...on the dorsal side, you have a dark black strip along the leading edge.  If you can put that on the outboard and ventral leading edges as well, that'd be excellent.
...could you slap an RCS thruster here, on the outboard side's aft edge?

RCS thrusters and ventral ribbing.  Going for a Sovereign-like look.  I have something unique planned for the neck and the sensor dome.

Top side is awesome, I'm not sure about the ribbed ventral side, maybe it's just a matter of perspective  ;)

Tested Vendetta with new Fardpoints aaaand ... she's firing in completely wrong directions but that's an easy fix :)

As soon as she's Beta ready, I'll let ya know FS ;)

btw. I've added some escape pods to the ventral 'saucer' area as well as added black armor to the front outline of the nacelle area - just as you wanted. I'll post pics later, right now I'm experimenting with speculars (RGB/grescale/alpha channels / no alphas etc.)

I like the ribbing, but use less of it. It doesn't look quite right having it up the edge of the saucer. Make it actually part of the ship, integrate it somehow instead of using it as a "space-filler." The ribbing near the bridge looks nice.
