BCFILES.NET IS AGO!!!
« Reply #20 on: April 02, 2013, 10:59:43 AM »
I've sent email to GF support about getting our older mods and those, modders don't have anymore in their private backups (like me :P ) but no answer so far. I wonder if they have all these mods ... it would be cool to have them around since it's quite a history ;) ie. Darkgunman's improvement pack had those SUPER COOL suns that put almost every sun I've seen in space sims like BC to shame and now it's gone :(

I hope these mods are recoverable

Ok people, this will take awhile but it is 100% happening AS OF TODAY!

my self and Mr Wiley are going to be building the site, he is also generously doing the sites Art work, We will keep the basic colours of BC-Central since BC-Central will be the MAIN OFFICIAL FORUM for the site, So Now I need Volunteers, if you would like to help us make history then please tell me what it is you would like to do and any past experiance you might have, to start with we are looking at two options 1) Wordpress and 2) me and wiley building one on dreamweaver  :hithead: :banghead: lol, BUT we are not going to give up, not in any fashion.

So for the team consists of 4 people

Working on Building the site
Myself
Wiley
Remore (on occasion)

When finished site admins (Ie uploading files and helping build the data base of files)
TiqHud

What I would like everyone to do no matter if they wanna work with us or not is to get a backup of every mod (as a zip or a rar) that they can and store them for us for a while.

lets see how well we do :D
remember the more the merrier

I have already contacted GF about our mods that we cannot reach in any way, they might help us getting them back although I sincerely doubt it... but hey ! hope dies last :)

Never mind ... support actually answered and apparently there was another list posted on forums which makes me blocked :( sorry Phoenix, I wanted to help ya with backups but it seems I won't be able to do much :(

I'm looking forward to seeing new BCFiles up and working :)

When finished site admins (Ie uploading files and helping build the data base of files)
i would be happy to help with that...
bit by bit, file by file, i can go through each and every file from BCFiles, each category, and download everything that is still available (i imagine most wont be, especially older mods) and then help upload things to the new site...
i can reuse screenshots and descriptions, or even get better screenshots and create better descriptions for each file uploaded...
i can also keep track of files that are long gone and not able to be retrieved - later on down the road we can put out a general request to anyone that may have such things to post them (some people keep every single thing they have ever downloaded, so some things may be out there on someone's harddrives and might not be lost forever)...

oh, and perhaps a "Rating" system should be left out lol  there are always those trolls who vote a 1 just to be jerks and no doubt would find their way to the new site to do the same...
but such details can be worked out and discussed once the site is up and running and the basic bugs are sorted out first...

one suggestion - perhaps if possible, the new site could contain a hidden forum for staff members to keep communication?  if not, one could be made here...

Here's a thought (don't crucify me please):

- Add a "Like" button for mods. (function similar to Facebook "Likes", i.e Like/Unlike)

I'm with Jimmy on the whole "no rating system". But I wouldn't mind seeing an ability to like a specific mod, and then you could have the Search function adapted to search for "most likable mods" or something to that effect.

Exactly. Except as I said, like the "Facebook likes", once you click Like, that link changes name to Unlike (so you can Unlike something if you so choose, after having tested it). Un-liking something simply removes that person from the "Number of likes".

Cookies here function that you only can "Like" someone. Can't Unlike them :P

works for me, your in!

i was going to keep a Rating but have the person who REVIEWS it (before upload) do  it and only them, for example

Mesh -8/10
Textures 6/10 etc etc etc

also just for the EASE of NOT having to set up another forum can we just have an admin area here pls jimmy, believe it or not it will save ALOT of time :D - Ether that or we remake BC-C believe it or not, doing a new forum for 1 thing is just as easy as rebuilding this one :(  :hithead: dont jump re-read if u have too :D u see what i mean :D

I think someone should put this topic into a new forum just for the new Bcfiles, oh, and sticky it.
This way, if anyone has any questions, they don't fill up the BC General area.

I vote for calling the forum: BCFiles 2.0

when the time comes, a forum here could be set up for the new BCFiles site...  one for public posting, and one private hidden for that staff only...  i just figured it would be easiest to have such a thing directly on the new BCFiles site itself...
if a public and hidden private forum were to be set up here, anyone could be given moderator functions and privileges and be in charge for those two forums specifically and only...

I think someone should put this topic into a new forum just for the new Bcfiles, oh, and sticky it.
This way, if anyone has any questions, they don't fill up the BC General area.
when the time comes, that could be done...  for now, this thread is ok for people to toss around ideas and have basic general conversation of the whole concept...  might be best to get an actual working (even if bare basic) site first before proceeding with setting up new forums here for it...

I vote for calling the forum: BCFiles 2.0
thought just occurred to me - im wondering if Gamefront would have a problem with a site being called "BCFiles" since the " ...Files" name is what they use for all their game download sites...  that may cause an issue...  they may not be happy with that name being used, and they may have rights to that name specifically (i personally have no idea though)...
if someone created another BC forum and called it "BC-Central 2.0" we (staff and admins) would most surely have an issue with that here...
although "BCFiles.net" has already been chosen, i am wondering if the site should bear the same name as Gamefront's...
perhaps if it was something like "BCMods.net" or "BCDownloads.com" (both are available) or whatever, that would clear any potential issue with Gamefront that may or may not occur?
this is something to really seriously consider before anything else and perhaps a message sent to Gamefront's admins might be in order to be sure there would be no issue from them with a site bearing the same name as theirs...

i chose bcfiles.net as its a website name that is avalible and they can't do shit about it lol ...  :readme: Yup i just wanna piss them off now for all their shit.

Well been playing around with a few things built a quick very basic wordpress and done a few bits to it, It not only has the LIKE option but also the ability to share on facebook (which i have done, add me if u wish too phoenix bondi) but remember this is just a test nothing more at the moment

http://bcfiles.wordpress.com/
so far the theme is not good enough on this one, i need a link bar one side and bah, i can't describe what i mean, i could prolly draw one up in photoshop...come to think of it...Photoshop, can't u build websites in there too now? even word???

will install dreamweaver tomorrow and see if i can do more with it!

i hear ya - but please be very wise about this...  if they wanted to cause an issue, they could...  i just strongly urge and recommend all potential problems be avoided...  we dont want to put in a whole lot of work to have any issues be raised and drama be caught down the road or even the site being shut down or anything of the sort...  i think it is best to completely be as far away and separate from them in all possible ways...  this new site isnt about them - it is about BC and it's modders and the community...  IMO it should have nothing at all whatsoever to do with Gamefront in any way and should be 100% new and unique to us only...
certainly, using their banner wouldnt be a good idea lol
please trust me - be very very wise and careful especially right from the beginning as it is now taking shape...
we dont know if they have any legal ties to the name or anything and it is best just to avoid any possible problems that may take shape later and get ugly...
and even if they dont have legal ties to the name or anything - why copy anything from them anyway?  would be best just to do something totally new, including the site name and address, IMO...

I am loving that this got started. I have a few questions, however.

First, Who will host all the files, there has got to be more than a terabyte on bcfiles...

Second, would it be possible to get the permission to host KM at the new site? It would be very nice to have the latest version at the site where every other mod is hosted, Imo. It feels to me to be kind of odd to have to go to the KM site just to download it, then come back to the new site for more ships, mods, etc.

Third, how would you handle the growth? I mean, there is bound to be a few more gigs every month being uploaded.

And, finally. I love you for doing this. Filefront is a piece of shit, pardon the language.

Is BCFiles.net set in stone?  Because an alternate name would be BCMods (I realize that would confuse people with the old obsolete program that was created years ago, but this might work).  This way there aren't any legal garbs.

KM was yanked from BCFiles because it contained copyrighted material - specifically music...  some years ago, that was brought to Filefront admins and they yanked it...
it is something to take into consideration, a decision that would be up to the new site owners and admins...

that is my absolute and only concern...  i really think BCMods or BCDownloads (with a site address to match that name) would be a much better and wiser idea...

UNTIL we get contacted by anyone - KM Would of been up there with out a second glance, the CJG network has 3 box's org/net/biz that we will be hosting from as for name no not set in stone in the slightest, BUT i have had an epiphany, Why couldn't we CHANGE the front page to bc-central.com it means we wouldn't have to pay anything extra for the name and the front page could be two big pics side by side, Left for example being FORUMS and right being MOD DOWNLOADS ??? surley this would sort out all issues 100% and it would be easy for anyone HERE to find it :D

I like that Idea!
What about a comments section like BCF has/had. I imagine it would link here?
Considering the copyrighted material used in KM was the original reason it was kicked from BCF; wouldn't a "Community/Featured Sites" link to their Site basically work the same. With less risk for you.

About the Banner: Isn't it just the original STBC Installation/Intro Banner + Files written after it? If you change "Files" to "Mods/Downloads/whatever" Gamefront can't do anything.

Also (I know the site isn't finished or anything but...) the "recent uploads, comments" and stuff at the bottom seems to be very small sized.
A slightly bigger font ( at least for the headings ) would be good.

Is BCFiles.net set in stone?  Because an alternate name would be BCMods (I realize that would confuse people with the old obsolete program that was created years ago, but this might work).  This way there aren't any legal garbs.

BCMods hosting BCMods as BCMods ... I don't see a problem with that :D

Also to everyone working on this: This is great!

Hell, while were on the subject of website vs forums, why not look into one of the CMS (Content Management Systems) which may be compatible with SMF forums? You'd be able to have the same user database, same forums, comments would lead to a new section of the forum etc.

Would ofcourse require cooperation with the BC-Central admins :)
