Title: Mark's work (Project Tardis) 14/06
Post by: MarkyD on May 14, 2010, 04:56:52 AM
Hi fellas

I remember seeing an Andorian ship being made before I left, so I am trying my hand at one.. any point me in a good direction for ref's?

Thanks.

I assume you're looking for Shran's ship from Enterprise, since that's the only Andorian ship I can think of.  Doug Drexler has plenty of reference pics...

http://drexfiles.wordpress.com/2009/07/16/andorian-cruiser/

There is also this little guy which was reused multiple times on Enterprise.  She was an Andorian ship once, looking like she does here, but painted Blue like the larger Andorian ships.

http://drexfiles.wordpress.com/2009/12/13/valakianhumanandorian-ship/

John Eaves has some other concept drawings here as well if someone wishes to make an Andorian Fleet.

No problem  :).  I also posted some concept art John Eaves drew of some other Andorian ships.  I don't know if you seen it since you responded before I finished Editing my post lol.

Thanks, very nice..

Can anyone shed any light on what goes on in here?

I have found plenty of ref's but all seem to cover areas of the mid / rear section..  I have outlined what I think is going on.

Nihilus gave you the perfect ref links...

especially this one
http://drexfiles.wordpress.com/2009/07/16/andorian-cruiser/

Ohh that section... well think of it like a jet engine... the top, bottom and rear shots show a good outline of it.
Here are some more....

I don't see how more references would be of any worth after the orthos, especially official ones.

Cheers mate, should have the mesh finished in a few days if I get time to work on it, I am emailing Drex today to see if he would mind showing a render of the section we cannot see correctly.

I have a couple andorian concept models. I had intended to make them to round out the fleet. They are very rough and very low poly, but if you'd like to see them, I can arrange it.

I have got far enough now to show a wip, the mesh is 100% unified and sits at 4048 Polies. When its finished it will prob be just over 10k as the wings have allot of detail. I am fleshing out the thrusters you see in that problematic area at the minute, but I now have a good feeling about there shape etc.

I was being somewhat optimistic with getting the mesh finished today, I have managed to finish the mid section (aft). Took a lot of squinting at screenies but I am happy with the result, I have started to box model the wings and position them, so that when I continue tomorrow I will have a good basis to start.

Keeping the polies down on this has been a pain, just finished unifing, then refining the wings to keep it looking smooth but detailed. current poly count is 6900 polies.

Nice lesson for you son...  it built as a quad as in a POLY, most meshes are built as quads...  then when converted all game models become meshes and are triangulated..  as long as those quads are unifed in max.. ie you could draw a singular line and make a triangle then you are A1

lesson over.

A model will not leave the max format without conversion..     the .nif .mod and every exporter ever will do this function, hence the importer / exporters's function.  i am not an expert on exporting, but im sure its the case

:P And here I thought it was so different formats could read vertex and face placements.  :funny Seriously though, I love the shuttlepod, and you've done it justice for sure.

Not all formats triangulate the mesh. It depends what the specs of the format are, if they can handle more than 3 vertices for a face.

Out of interest, is that 2k count polys or tris?

Hey Limey,

Its a max renderd face count..

so thats 1500 polies..    and for a shuttle in this detail with it being 100% unified and clean Is very clean  :dontcare:

Please feel free to download the shuttle and play with it...  please texture as you see fit, even if you have not done it before, i have included a UVW texture map that shows the locations of all the faces.

Mapping is mirrored...   so the registries will work lol

Lets see some, Mirror universe types or borg take overs etc too  8)

All i ask is that all releases of this model need to read:

NX-01 Shuttlepod model by MarkyD
UVW Mapping and templates by MarkyD

Thats it, apart from that have some fun guys  8)

I will be making my own too

OOOooooo.  can I bum this for a P-Star shuttle?

the green pelt seam is the colour I also use.  even with Baz's help, I can't figure out how to reassign hides for better unwrapping like you did with the shuttle.  it's driving me crazy.

Thanks fellas..

Mapping is all about practice.. use the standard 3ds max tools and get stuck in...

The best advice i can give is that if you can learn organic mapping you will learn to stitch the uv's in the mapping phase.. then

mapping summat like a ship or shuttle becomes a breeze it really does  ;)

OK... so whilst texturing the shuttle, I decided i wanted more mesh detail and started looking into normal maps etc etc...  (i know BC does not support them)

That got me on a fiddle and i started to play with normal maps etc, as a project on getting me there, I decided to build a tardis, make it nice and accurate, high poly so then i can use certain elements for a bump map later. The actual mesh is low enough for game mind..  me being well. me.. i have spent an hour cleaning her up and its only 900 polies

So i WILL release the full model and use it as a test pice for normal maps and texturing.. BTW  I don't really like Dr Who, the model just suited my needs  :)

Hopefully, after I have done this I can use a simular technique to do the shuttle and the Andorian ship and then future projects like the TNG Atraiu etc.

BC might not support normals and bumps, but remember you can simulate it. Something about baking the shadows in or... I dunno.

Last one for today.. mesh finished at 1700..

Yes mate, its a method known as render baking, where you would bake bumps / normals / glows etc to the hull.. I used it on the gagarin, only very slightly though.  :)

Cool.  Love the Tardis!  But you need a decent interior/bridge to go with it!!  And it would be really cool to see some sort of uber-advanced weapon that sends out a massive shockwave to disable other ships, or something like that.

:D you've managed to do that faster than i have. I never got round to texturing mine (Can't texture very well in GMAX)  .. http://bc-central.net/forums/index.php/topic,7311.0.html. Plus yours looks alot better.

I have a Dalek mothership model if you want it. Otherwise its brilliant. :yay:

I went off the best image I could find on the net..  the one where Billy Piper is in it..  The only difference I noticed on images of the newer versions of the tardis was the housing on the light above was slightly differently shaped..

Whats the texture difference matey  :)

Turn up the saturation (and make the wood seem less grimy), blacken the windows and make their frames white, add a Saint Johns Ambulance sticker to the right door and voila, Eleventh Doctor TARDIS.

So it looks like an old one.. ?

Have they gone backwards in the design scheme... after the tenth?

That one is fugly too.. I reckon I will let someone else do a retexture if they so wish mate  :) you up for converting it  :P

Yes, they have gone backwards. But in my opinion it doesn't look so bad.

But I don't have Max anymore, can't do any converting. :(

I'd say keep it the Ninth and Tenth Doctor colour scheme.

Or, if you want to feel really retro, you could always do a similar texture scheme to what it looked like in Logopolis back in 1981, lol.  :P

You have my card...

In 2010, a crack commando guy was sent to prison by a military court for a crime he didn't commit. He promptly escaped from a maximum security stockade to the Los Angeles underground. Today, still wanted by the government, he survive as soldier of fortune. If you have a problem, if no-one else can help, and if you can find him, maybe you can hire MarkyD and he will kick daddies butts for free. :nono:

Lol

To be fair with the exception of a blue police notice board, and fatter window frames, lock on the opposite side...  missing a handle on the door? there is not allot of diference, the general shape is less detailed, but not overly... what did the light look like?

P.S

Google sucks for a forum convo when people wanna follow along  ;)

Thanks mate
