Very nice Mitch,
what are your pc specs?

If anyone else would like to volunteer answers on there specs as well, that would be great.
That way i can determine on what kind of Poly/Texture range im looking at for WiP.

Get NanoFX 2b, SNS Galaxy, CG Sov, and all the other great ships. Your comp will run them fine.

Who on earth told that you can't have BC in high setting? My laptop runs BC with all the stuff mentioned above, and also games like Empire At War, Half Life 2 and Hitman Blood Money, and I only have:

AMD Sempron 3000+ 1.8GHz (arguably better than yours)
512MB DDR RAM (half that of yours, im currently saving up for a 1GB chip)
ATi Radeon X700 PCi-e 128MB.

@mitch
Nice pics of my favorite ship class :D
Anyway you can EASILY run BC on high settings, you could even try to turn off FIX BRIGHT GLOW BUG in the NanoFX2 configuration pannel, after wich you can turn on SPECULAR HIGHLIGHTS.

Ive made texture enhancements on all of the ships in the KM PIMPED, so your PC can and will handle it nicely.

For example I play BC on High, with all the settings on, exept for MipMaps.
Also i've set my GFX drivers on 16XFS Antistropic Filtering and 8X FS Antialiasing (sometimes 16X - beauty shots ;)). Resolution 1024x768

My CPU: AMD Sempron 2400+ (OC @ 2.00Ghz)
     GFX: Nvidia GF 6600GT 128Mb
     RAM: 1Gb Kingston VR (400Mhz)

P.S. Now that you've started it, here are a few of my own screenies:

They are positive, they help with performance, no matter what.;)

It basicly creates a set of textures out of 1 texture, each one the half smaller than the previous, and the video card switches them based on distance.
That way it doesn't have to do a lot of interpolating when an object with that texture is far away.

In short, it removes detail that you can't see either way.
I still can't read peoples minds, nor can I read peoples computers, even worse, I can't combine the two to read what is going wrong with your BC install...

Interesting, is this done automatically, or is it based on the Hi , Medium and Low settings for a ship?

All done automagicly by the videocard/driver.

As long as the texture is flagged for this, and videocard can do it, then it works.

It's affected by the High/Med/Low textures in the respect that the mipmap textures will be half their respective size.

If you want I can go into more detail in how it works.

Cool that card is the same as mine only i have 256mb.

Yeah I can run BC full now. on my radeon 9700 128mb i could run fine at 1280x1024 with BC but i had to resize the SNS galaxy textures but CG sovy was fine. Who ever told mitchhankins that his card coulden't run BC on full must not know alot about vid cards.

The reason I ask is that I tend to only include high res textures with ships that I've HP'd, if they all have mipmaps this will presumably improve performance?

Mipmaps are based on distance, not what the card can handle easily.

For example, we have a map of 1024x1024. This is the base texture and is used for the closest distances.

Then there are, usually, 3 mip map levels, level 1 is 512x512, level 2 is 256x256 and the 4th level is 128x128.

I don't know anything of the distances these get swapped out, but they are.

[EDIT] I believe that the High/Med/Low textures are only used when it's set that way in BC, BC itself won't do it based on distance.
It will swap out models (the lods).
