Federation Fighter idea.
« on: February 12, 2009, 04:25:08 PM »
Just a quick knock out of a fighter idea. It's meant to fill the spot of Space Superiority during the TMP era.
Based losely on the VF-19 Excalibur from Macross.

Obviously she still needs textures and some phasers/mini-torps.

Looks like a jet with TMP warp nacelles glued to it.

I suggest you be more 'adventurous' with your designs.

IMHO.
Can't wait for 2014 to start.

Granted.

Star Trek fighters are always a pain to design though. It's just a quick, see-what, design.

edit: here's a back view just for an overallness

Snub the nose a lot to look like something off a shuttle maybe? Star Trek: Shattered Universe (knock on wood) is a great resource for TMP era fighter craft.

I do love the rest of the design, just not the F-14 style nose.

It has a feel of the fighter from space above and beyond

LOL, yeah it really does, doesn't it? :P

Looks interesting enough, though I agree with the above statements. I'd definitely suggest modifying the nose a bit to give it a bit more of a shuttlecraft feel to it. Make that area bulkier to better balance the feel of the craft to the impulse manifolds. :) Keep it up.

Making it have a shuttlecraft-like front kind of ruins the flow of it. I know that it doesn't feel very Trek-like right now, but textures will fix that. I'm suddenly reminded of that silly game with the planet-side strategy. New worlds i think it was. Basically it was workbees hovering on the ground, IIRC. Bad way to go.

Shattered universe, IIRC as well, had the same fighter designs as Starfleet Command - which to me, while cool, just don't work.

Personally, I don't like ventral mounted nacelles in fighters.  But that's just me.
As for the nose, to make it more TMP, I'd make it look like the front of a MiG-17, and instead of an intake, have a mini deflector.

WZ45 did something much like that, with the deflector in the nose. I'm not a fan of the concept. I like to think that those little cut outs on either side of the nose are micro-deflectors. Its the same idea I had for the miranda's lack of deflectorness.
Hey look, things that resemble the things around the deflector of the connie! :-P.

I think that half of you who say "nah" will reconsider when I cloth her.
I'm working on a smaller interceptor to this space superiority. However, as I'm sitting here typing this, my girlfriend is yawning and doing her best to not poke me, so its time for me to get goin' :-).

More will be shown later.

As soon as I saw it, before reading your description, I knew it was a Macross fighter.  Looks pretty cool.

Actually, I read somewhere that ships without any discernible deflector dish have a deflector grid. Same basic concept, only it's something that's cast throughout the ship's hull rather than projected from a single dish near the bow. Also, I doubt those two little things the Miranda Class has really holds much purpose beyond the aesthetic demonstration of displaying the similarities between her and her Constitution Class cousins. I could be wrong though.

Anyways, can't wait to see what you do with this fighter thing. :]

well Nothing really has much of a purpose beyond aesthetic demonstration of similarities between her and the Connie. Still, it makes sense in my head.

The smaller interceptor. Probably going to ditch the rear wings.

also note that these nacelles might end up being placeholders. I took them from the Shuttlecraft, but I think they might need to be replaced on both this and the other fighter.

To be honest the Nacelles are the best part. The one in the picture above me actually looks pretty good. I'd give it something a little more reinforced in the canopy, though.

Put Miranda/Reliant-style Phaser cannons on the fins.
I still can't read peoples minds, nor can I read peoples computers, even worse, I can't combine the two to read what is going wrong with your BC install...

That is a fantastic call.

Unfortunately I had a power outtage and my laptop has been acting wonkey ever since. I'm trying to fix it, now, but I might have to restage. If it gets to that point, I ought to be able to put my current drive as my slave. :-(.

I'm ok with ventral or dorsal mount but I agree the nose would look better  more like a 50s or 60s "scoop" intake fighter like an mig-15 through 19 or a Sabre jet  with a deflector..kind of like..ah..I think theres one called a wasp or a hornet which is from some other game...if you get the TMP Ark Royal carrier it comes with the fighter I'm talking about...this one could have a smaller deflector

Personally, I don't like ventral mounted nacelles in fighters.  But that's just me.

The model you are referring to comes from Starfleet Command. That fighter is the exact reason why I want new fighters, lol.
I will give the scoop thing a try when I get the computer back up and running, but to be honest, I don't think it will work well. I'll post pics.
