BC Servers To Be Shut Down
« on: November 29, 2006, 06:31:21 PM »
I just heard this second-hand from a user on BCS:TNG's forums who listens to the "Hailing Frequencies" podacst:

Quote from: Inuyasha
BAD NEWS!!!!! ACTIVISON IS GONNA CLOSE THE BC SERVERS DOWN 4 GOOD AT THE END OF THE YEAR AS WELL AS ARMADA 1. yeah, this really sux. altho if ppl go online enough they may just keep it open. so, imho LETS GO FLOOD SOME SERVERS!!!!!!!!!! Twisted Evil so, yea. i heard it on a podcast called "Hailing Frequencies"

Why they plan to do this is somewhat of a mystery, but I, for one, have no intention of seeing BC MP die today.  We have to do... something!

jb76 edit: fixed the quote...  had to put the name Inuyasha in quotes "" ...

This really does suck. It may also mean no new versions of KM and since thats an MP mode, it would suck even more!
Can't wait for 2014 to start.

I already knew that Armada 1 was going to shut down. this year it was already shutdown for a month. and alot of players are trying to stop it but Armada 1 is sort of dying.  but that they wan't to close BC sucks!!  that's bull sh**, I mean look howmany players are online on a evening...

I got this informtion from A1 forum:

Quote
activision cant shut down the server to the game cuz the rights to server belong to some one else.it isnt up to activision to stop it. its up to the server whos serving it now and i just contacted him and he asures me that a1 will be up and running for at the very least 1-2 more years and told me to dis-reguard any rumors of any kind. activision has noting to do with the servers and sold the rights to a-1 to explosive and even they cant shut down serving or hosting the game cuz its being served by a private company seperate from activision. all activision has is the gaming rights to change, continue, or stop game programing of a1 and cant by law stop any one from hosting or serving a game unless they were the original server and they never were. the original server was won and they sold out over 3 yrs ago and its been sold many times afterwards. and the only way for activision to shut down the a1 lobby is for them to buy out the current server and he has told me that he hasnt had any contact whatsoever from activision and doesnt plan on selling it to any one.

Theres a problem with that though. Not everyone has the same files as you. The downside of BC is that to host or play on an MP game, you must have EXACTLY the same files as the hoster/hostee to play, otherwise you get that filemismatch rubbish. And the chances of anyone having the exact same stuff as any other person is impossible since people have very unique tastes.

Dude I know that.... thats why everyone uses KM these days. :P

I am part of the KM team btw if you didn't know.

Oh and if you want to have a direct to I.P. game, it would be a good idea to contact the people via WLM/MSN messenger first.

as Neb pointed out, that is *exactly* why KM was created, and all the hard work that has been done (and is still being done) for it...  a whole team is working on it ;)

this is better then good.. This means BC can be classed as abandonware.. which means a well worded letter asking "please can we have the source code for that abandonware" might actually get a response.

I don't remember where I herd the good news but I can tell you why the servers wont shut down.

Activision does not Own the BC servers, so they have no control over, thus they can't kill them. Also the ones who do own the servers are not selling them to anyone and are keeping them up for the foreseeable future.

Same reason as the A2 servers then?

The BC servers are hosted by Gamespy I think, so are the A2 servers.
I still can't read peoples minds, nor can I read peoples computers, even worse, I can't combine the two to read what is going wrong with your BC install...
