Having Trouble With Animated Maps
« on: June 09, 2009, 11:05:52 AM »
I'm trying to update all of the TOS ships (for my install only, at the moment) with animated bussards, but for some strange reason, the maps aren't showing up properly in Max, and thus aren't exporting properly. I've included a render of the problem as well as a screenshot of my material settings.

*smacks forehead*
I forget to edit the UV maps for the new textures. That's the problem.

They need to be set up the same way regular diffuse maps are (kill illumination slot, and set diffuse alpha source to alpha).

It was in TOS ya know. :P

I've never seen a tholian webspinner painted in the TOS scheme with TOS nacelles glued to it. I've only ever seen just the basic tholian ship in that shape. But never a Fed-type one.

Have you tried the following:

Remove the "_glow" suffix from all of the textures, and report the mesh like that. Also, in the plugin in scripts/ships make the glow suffix as "" instead of "_glow"?

I haven't tried that yet, but I may. I looked at my nif structure and compared into to Wiley's TOS Akira and noticed that they were much different.

Setting up animated glows is much trickier to do than basic animations. You need an inner part which contains the glows and an outer piece which has a transparent animation which lets the glow through. The animations themselves can't glow which is why you have to do it this way. Unfortunately Max 3 can't open the nif file so I can't have a look at it. Have you got a 3ds version which I could have a look at.

I managed to get the animated transparencies working, fortunatly I had a model which already had them set up properly so I copied it from that. I've put in the files I used to test that it worked with the file. It's in Max 3 format so you should be ok opening it.
Looks like you will have to reapply the textures (apart from the ones I did) and just redo the smoothing as they didn't properly make the transition to 3ds.
One thing I remembered is that the parts which use the transparent animations must be attached together to make one object otherwise they wont work.
Here is the file
