Updated Post Dominion War Excelsior Refit
« on: June 10, 2009, 12:49:03 AM »
I got permission from Bones (McCoy) on doing an update for the ship. I am currently working on the exterior only and plan on having some help doing animated maps across the nacelles if anyone is interested in helping with that part. What I plan on currently doing is finishing the armor along the hull, saucer section and engineering section. I am leaving the Engineering sections area as is, leaving the Armor along the Warp Core Area, and along the lower part of the deflector area to protect it from damage during combat. As far as animations maps go, I plan on making the Buzzards like the Enterprise E's, and I want the Warp Nacelles to Pulsate with powers. If anyone can help me with that part, send me a message ASAP. So far these are post production images of what i've got down so far. This is like 2/20th of the way complete so bear with me on this. I don't plan on making this a super quick and drop project.  As you can see, I gave it fresher looking Nacelles so far, started on the armor plating and added a brand spanking new deflector dish of my own design. I wanted something new. Also I plan on updating the HP on this ship to be a warship. I plan on taking the navigational lights out completely pretty much and making that the Torpedo Launcher for Photon Torpedos, I am keeping the aft and forward main launchers for quantum only. Giving the ship a full 360 degree Torpedo Coverage.

I don't like the dish's color.  Reminds me of puke.

Should I darken or lighten it?

I say change the color period...it's an excelsior, shouldn't it be black/blue anyways?

IMHO you should leave it the way it was and darken the color a bit but not too much also I don't mean to be rude but darkening hull isn't much of an armor (I know cuz I made Post-Nem Sovereign that way as it was my first ship retexture), better try something more creative like replacing those dark areas with black armor from sovereign (the one above impulse engines)

here's example of CR's War Sovereign armor look like, properly restyled and it would look really cool on PDW Excelsior

I am not a huge fan of removing the nav lights for torpedoes. That detracts from the visual quality of the ship, and it kind of would be overpowered. 360 degree coverage is for phasers, torpedoes are just the heavy artillery.

I'm personally just a fan of the classic "switch between photons and quantum armaments from the Felix window) as the Sovereign is the only ship we've seen that has a dedicated separate quantum launcher.

Alright, I'll rework over the armor but I do plan on leaving some Windows in there. Minimal Windows and I am going to let the deflector survey run for a few more days.

Indeed, green and red aren't Federation glow colours. Perhaps maybe a different hue of blue...darker perhaps?

QFT

yeah some windows would be good, placed like on CR's Sov hull section (six or seven in tight row)

I would like to leave a bit of light azteching on the hull though even where the armor is present. To me that seems a bit more canon that way due to the fact that the azteching is done mostly by hull plating being added onto the ship. Though I was wondering what colors to do the armor in? I know a Grey and Black but I was looking for some input on patterns to use.

personally I'm not a fan of simply slapping sov nacelles on an excel, esp when you can figure the sov nacelles would probably tear an excel in half. SOmething more advanced but similar in design to the original nacelle (or ent-b nacelle) would be better.
I just realised something. I've released over 300 fully modded ships for bridge commander. Bow to your master :D

What are you talking about?  The nacelles are of their own design.  Look closer.

Sov-ish then :P

I stand by my original statement. a moderization of the exsisting nacelle design would look cooler. I'm not saying the nacelles suck or anything. They're great looking, I just don't think they're the best fit for an excel.

They were from ship of similiar size to Constitution so I had to enlarge them a bit to fit them to the rest of the ship, I tried to replace originals with Sovereign nacelles and it looked monstrously indeed, these are much better with overall design which is much more streamlined than original Excelsior. On the other hand updated Excelsior nacelle design would look extremly outdated in post-DS9 era.

They are not even Sovereignish as they have all different bussards location as well as side lines and front not to mention TMP/TNG mix of the back of the nacelles so other than overall shape of them I can't really see any similiarities (it's like comparing Galaxy to Ambassador - similiar shape but different design)

Oh and I think you have confused PDW Excelsior refit with Chabot Excelsior refit which does use Sovereign nacelles and Excalibur overall textures style

Id like to ring in on this.

Though I dont think the green deflector works with that ship, I am obviously not against a deflector color change.

Might I remind all of you that that the color for the Connie deflector changed not once, not twice but three times. From no color to yellow to blue.

Blue is the standard color for all deflectors in the Fed fleet. I believe it represents a type of deflector, and another color can represent another type. That is why all of my Marine Corps ships will have red deflectors and darker textures...and indication of a different setup compared to standard ships.

So, I say trying a few different colors is a good idea IMO. Try a dark purple....that might work.

With a slight hint of blue I think Raven's idea would work really well, actually.

Yea, a purple blue, or electric blue if you want to call it that instead of the neon or sky blue it uses now...it sets it apart but still keeps it somewhat similar. Its just my opinion but I think a ship refit for war needs to look different then ships built for peace.

There is empty space on sides of the nacelles so it could be changed for bussard scopes or whatever it's called ;)
Raven's idea would be great (the one with red deflector) but IMO it would have to be a lot dimmer than it is now, maybe something like on Galaxy but instead of blue/orange/red you could use white/brown for inner circle and dimm red outer part of it (I can't describe it better, sorry) but it could work pretty good.

Another small advice is to remove all bottom saucer spot lights except for registry but even this one isn't necesary on war refit I guess
