Coolest thing to ever happen to me in BC
« on: August 05, 2009, 12:29:25 PM »
Normally I don't start threads about my gaming, because I don't actually game in BC that much, but this was crazy.  I was trying to see how close I could get the Excalibur to the big powerful protostar in the stellar nursery system, and I got a little too close.  Before I could get the lumbering beast turned around, my impulse engines were disabled and the star pulled me in at an incredible speed.  I was somewhat offset from the star, and it pulled me so fast that I actually slingshot around the star and was thrown clear of the nebula cloud.  Wild.

i went back and tried to recreate it.  I must have been just enough offset to make it happen the first time.  man i love gravity fx.  nicely done, frontier!

There is a way to calculate the speed and direction you need to get the "slingshot" effect around a gravity well...
But I don't remember it  :(   and you would still need something else (like a button, an AI, a NAV point, or something like that) to make your ship face that direction with that speed since it is pretty hard for us to maneuver the ship to perfectly face a direction.

So DJ got pretty damn lucky then.
"To live on as we have is to leave behind joy, and love, and companionship, because we know it to be transitory, of the moment. We know it will turn to ash. Only those whose lives are brief can imagine that love is eternal. You should embrace that remarkable illusion. It may be the greatest gift your race has ever received."

Thers also one funny thing i experienced:

Try the PSI blackhole, grab your slipstream drive and try to intercept to its coordinates via slipstream intercept. You will be thrown with such an incredible speed

I've slungshot around Belaruz IV or whatever that default QB set is these days.

Quite a few times.

My friend Monk has always been a cynic about BC, prattling on about how crap it is. On a whim one day, he decided to play it.

I set up a QB with a bunch of ships, and after he defeated the enemy, he went around attacking his allies. He was particularly annoyed when he couldn't catch up with a sovereign class. I noticed something.

"Wait, you see how his speed is steadily increasing, and he's sort of sliding sideways?"
-"Yeah?"
"Expand his target listing, see if his engines are online..."
-"Huh?"
*I do it for him*
"Yep, see, his impulse engines are offline, and he wasn't going the right speed for orbital insertion."
-"So..."
"So, there's no need to chase him, he's caught in that planet's gravity well, and will burn up in a minute."
-"Oh, COOL!!"

Then he was impressed that we could beam their crew aboard and rescue them, though it required a warp jump.

Man, I really need to install Gravity FX and Galaxy Charts.

But first I'd need to make a new install (my current install is kind of f'ed up) and reinstall all of the mods and my custom hardpoints!  NOT something I want to do. -.-

you could always use KM as a base install and work from there...  at least with KM, the many mods included (such as Gravity FX) all work perfectly together...

The bad 'collision' system often makes for some humorous situtions. I am pretty sure I am not the only one to go spinning very fast and in a random direction after colliding with another ship. Sometimes this happens. And sometimes you just blow up. The former is always alot funnier though :D

Billz, if you're in KM1 (can't remember the name of the mod outside if, if it exists outside KM), have you tried disabling that mutator "Nemesis Collisions"? I too didn't like the collision system, and a long time ago I tried to find a fix for it, and disabling that made me happy at least.

Sometimes on the early testings of GC, when I was trying out the engaging warp sequence I came across something funny, related to collisions and speed.
In the warping engage sequence, the ships boosts to a big speed to show her warping out right, so, in the "early" days of GC, it still didn't had a check to see if the path was clear. So on a few occasions, my ship boosted to that high speed in a straigth line, colliding with something (normally a asteroid or a ship that happened to be there). However she didn't stopped, she was destroyed but continued in a straigth line in high speed, even reached the point of the warp flash and all. Then she appeared in the "in warp" set ya know, with the starstreaks and all, spinning and exploding, ultimately being destroyed in bits, and leaving me stranded in that set

Currently not using KM1. I can disable the stock collision in BC as that has been unchanged, but then you just fly through stuff, and that is no fun  :P

I think my copy of Nemesis collisions is buggy. I still can't move much after the ships separate from their collision. I've had to disable it.

Another funny thing happened today. Starships with hydraulics, lol. :P

Explanation:
I was playing around in BC after installing GCv2. I warp to Psi Blackhole while using the USS Faragut from Wileys XI Kelvin fleet pack.

As soon as I exited warp, I start getting pulled towards the black hole.

Instead of getting away, I turn my ship towards the black hole with impulse engines on full. Fly through the black hole and come out on the other side with hardly any damage (shouldn't a black hole destroy most things, lol?). After that, I am flying at such an incredible speed.

I then warp to the Itari system and for some reason my ship is 'bouncing' in warp. As in, it can be seen moving up and down like a car with a sweet hydraulics system.

Not sure why it was doing it but it was funny as hell.
Can't wait for 2014 to start.

I want to add another type myself.  I was goofing with the Aen Nen Thai (vulcan warbird) after finding out it had some alternate torpedoes.  i was playing against a Borg Sphere at the time, and one of those funky torpedoes hit.  the sphere spent at least a MINUTE spiraling out of control, spraying a series of spirals with its plasma leak!  it happened again later after another ship blew up completely.  the debris from it did the same thing till I hit end combat.
