To clear up some mud, I read somewhere, maybe ST:Magazine, that the deflector used variable geometry. I hate quick fix answers, but this one is reasonable since the unsolved mystery of the deflector position seen only on the season 4+ credits is seen immediately after clearing the moorings; that could represent the stationary position. Thus, if your angle/spacing looks good (and it does), you can shut up the purists

. Now the season 6+ deflector which looks dinky, maybe a refit? Spare parts? Or just bad CGI because ERTL made a terrible styrene mock up... which doesn't need to be duplicated again.
I didn't see a phaser strip added, but you don't necessarily need one; they could have just as easily used a ball pivoting bank.
